To think that UK voters should be ashamed of their apathetic ignorance?

Never heard of the DUP before today? Really, it's embarrassing.

Yet so many posters don't seem to find it that way. I'm a filthy foreigner and I literally know more about UK politics than many posters here.

AIBU to think that's really shameful?

I said that people would have no reason to look up a group that they cannot vote for and would not affect them!

in the real world they wouldn't.

But in this world they should both know the History of the DUP AND know how to get BBC NI.

Lovelycardigan · 10/06/2017 14:52

I can't vote for the DUP.

I live in England.

I don't have all the time in the world. Barely had enough time to research about the parties I could vote for to an extent that I would be happy with.

I know a little about the history of NI, but it would have be a waste of my time to know everything about DUP and their policies up to this point.

Justanothersingledoutnumber · 10/06/2017 14:52

And have done this to vote for say.... The Labour Party MP in their area.

Lasagnabreath · 10/06/2017 14:55

Just what the actual fuck are you on about?? You are contradicting yourself constantly. Do you just want an argument. I am genuinely baffled. Pick what it is you want to say, think ablut it carefully then type it down.

Lasagnabreath · 10/06/2017 14:57

What I mean by contradicting is, you are agreeing then arguing with me then back to agreeing then back to disagreeing. You say people wouldn't and shouldn't have to know and don't have time to search for the NI news yet you then say they should have known more. Are you deliberately being dim to get a rise from people?

Justanothersingledoutnumber · 10/06/2017 14:57

Lasagnabreath

I was agreeing with you.....

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 10/06/2017 14:57

Bbc iPlayer northern Ireland www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/categories/northern-ireland/highlights

Took 2 seconds to google

So it did. How clever you are. Now why exactly would anyone in real life who did not live in Northern Ireland even think of setting the BBC app to the Northern Ireland version?

When you download these apps they identify your location. I switched off location and put a fake London postcode in to make the ITV player work (As STV is rubbish) My BBC app also is set to London (to avoid the horrors you get on BBC Scotland)

So do tell, why exactly, given that you can't set the app to 2 locations would anyone pick NI if you weren't living there?

If anything they might set it to an English region to avoid the provincial programmes.

Lasagnabreath · 10/06/2017 14:57

Didn't come across that way.. clearly. That's why I said I don't understand why you agree one minute then argue against me the next.

Justanothersingledoutnumber · 10/06/2017 14:58

Are you deliberately being dim to get a rise from people?

I think maybe you've either misread quotes as part of my post, or missed my sarcasm.

Lasagnabreath · 10/06/2017 14:58

You don't set it up for Northern Ireland fs. It has a section saying BBC Northern Ireland and you click on it.

Lasagnabreath · 10/06/2017 14:58

More than likely missed the sarcasm and for that I apologise.

Justanothersingledoutnumber · 10/06/2017 14:59

That's why I said I don't understand why you agree one minute then argue against me the next.

Which post?

Justanothersingledoutnumber · 10/06/2017 15:00

More than likely missed the sarcasm and for that I apologise.

No problem, i've done it a lot before too. once i even had a go at someone thinking it was someone else with a similar name in a thread.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 10/06/2017 15:03

You don't set it up for Northern Ireland fs. It has a section saying BBC Northern Ireland and you click on it.

It has a setting asking for "current location". I set mine as London to avoid the "viewers in Scotland have their own hell " ( thank you Armando Iannucci for that line)

Outside the rarefied , sanctimonious world of MN why on earth would anyone outside NI pick the NI setting?

Lasagnabreath · 10/06/2017 15:04

just I'm guilty of that lol once I start I just keep going until I've made a fool of myself 🙈

zukiecat · 10/06/2017 15:04

I didn't really know who the DUP were until yesterday, I had heard of them but not really aware of all they stood for

So I must be one of the ignorant idiots you mean OP

I'm Scottish, and a friend of mine, lived in our home city all her life didn't even know we were having a Referendum a couple of years ago, let alone what it was all about

Now that's ignorance!

Lasagnabreath · 10/06/2017 15:07

But it's not a setting. Even if you have it set to match your location you literally click on a drop down menu to see BBC NI. Why are you being deliberately silly? I've used it while in England plenty of times, I honestly know how it works.

Here is a picture to help you understand.
A drop down menu in categories and low and behold there is Northern Ireland.

To think that UK voters should be ashamed of their apathetic ignorance?
Justanothersingledoutnumber · 10/06/2017 15:07

I'm guilty of that lol once I start I just keep going until I've made a fool of myself

Likewise.... I don't know when to take a break and get stupid rushing in with comments.

Lasagnabreath · 10/06/2017 15:10

Zukiecat I live in Northern Ireland and only recently understood what they stand for 🙈

In my defence I grew up in England and honestly no matter how much my partner or people over here try to explain it to me I just can't get t because I don't understand why they think the way they do. My partner admitted he didn't know their policies but would have voted for hem because it's what we (protestants) vote for and no one looks into the policies and votes based on religion. It's ridiculous over here.

Lasagnabreath · 10/06/2017 15:10

Just I get an adrenaline rush lol

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 10/06/2017 15:11

Why are you being deliberately silly? I've used it while in England plenty of times, I honestly know how it works

Why are you being deliberately silly by this determination that non NI residents should be aware of and watch BBC Northern Ireland?

Lasagnabreath · 10/06/2017 15:15

I didn't say they fucking should!

I'm saying that you are wrong about accessing it. I don't expect anyone outside Northern Ireland to be aware or even acknowledge the politics over here. Fuck sake I barely understand it myself. Furthermore I thought when I moved back here that I could still vote for the English politics. So please find and quote or screenshot if you have to exactly where I said that those from England and elsewhere should learn all about our politics because they need to. Because I can assure you will find no such quote!

Bananagio · 10/06/2017 15:29

Did anyone who doesn't see the relevance in the politics of NI regarding voting in the GE think that an understanding of the GFA, the Troubles etc would have been worth knowing about for the EU ref?

LivLemler · 10/06/2017 15:43

I think it's fair enough that people in GB don't know the ins and outs of DUP policy. I think it's surprising that so many have not heard of the DUP at all. I think it's astounding that so many think Ireland is part of the UK, or that Northern Ireland isn't.

Have lost count of the number of people confidently explaining that the DUP couldn't possibly be British.

tabulahrasa · 10/06/2017 16:04

"Go back and read my comments. I said that people would have no reason to look up a group that they cannot vote for and would not affect them! Jesus people use those eyes."

Again... they do affect everyone in the UK.

They have for nearly 2 decades been the 4th largest party in the U.K. parliament, voting in it, debating in it and counted in as support for the Conservative party.
