to expect that people understand that when someone says "Everything in moderation" they don't mean *everything*, it's just a figure of speech

LOL!! i subsribe to the 'everything in moderation theory' for reasonable things , like chocolate, but not class a drugs ! i have a zero tolerance of those for myself !

it is indeed a figure of speech, a platitude, a cliche, and not anything else to be taken to its literal end !

pruni, no you are not being unreasonable. incidently, some of us HAVE taken heroin in moderation, haven't we? pethidine anyone?

Spidermama · 19/03/2007 19:57

It makes a nonsense of the phrase then doesn't it? I mean, why bother saying something if it doesn't really mean what it's supposed to?

I always feel it's one of those ill-thought out phrases people trot out when they're trying to justify something which isn't entirely justifiable.

beckybrastraps · 19/03/2007 19:57

I used to share a flat with a trainee homeopath who was always telling me how a little bit of arsenic would be awfully good for me. Good for the hair apparently...

nickytwotimes · 19/03/2007 19:57

damn, you beat me to it!!!!

harpsichordcarrier · 19/03/2007 19:57

I had some morphine after my C section.
it was f'ing marvellous.
fancy some now, as it happens.

Spidermama · 19/03/2007 19:58

Is pethedine the same as heroin then?

I had that for my first miscarriage and I absolutely hated it.

Oooh, I didn't like morphine. It made me vom

lulumama · 19/03/2007 20:00

yes pruni.....but when i say it , i understand i am referring to things that are ok to have in moderation..not things that are damaging in moderation

heroin is, don;t think froot shoots are in the same category

too tiem consuming to say, everything in moderation....except hard drugs, spirits , saturated fat, etc..

not about justifying the unjustifiable , imo

and pethidine is a narcotic, but not sure if same derivation as heroin, diamorphine/ morpine are though...

nickytwotimes · 19/03/2007 20:00

spider, i believe pethidine/morphine and heroin are opiates derived from the papaver family. i had morphine during child birth and i hated it too. now, as for the gas and air, that was fab..

harpsichordcarrier · 19/03/2007 20:01

morphine, pethidine, meptid, the stuff they put in epidurals are all opioids iirc.
I don't think I have spelt that right but anyway they all derive from opium. like heroin.

Hulababy · 19/03/2007 20:02

I had pethidine during my induction. Can't remember much of that time TBH as Iwas so tired and had been in so much pain. It helped me sleep. On waking I thought I was pretty normal and sane, DH suggests otherwise though and reckons I was out of it for ages!

Caligula · 19/03/2007 20:02

LOL lol lol at this.

I'm thinking dog-piss.

SherlockLGJ · 19/03/2007 20:04

I had morphine, several times a day for a fortnight...........[bliss]

Oh and they packed my neck with morphine at the same time, didn't even know I had a scar for about three days.

LilyLoo · 19/03/2007 20:06

Totally agree with you i was foolish enough to mention the moderation word on what i thought was a thread about food and fruit shoots and am still that i got chastised for suggesting that this could include 'heroin' WTF !

MrsSpoon · 19/03/2007 20:07

I had diamorphine when in labour with DS1, I'm glad I never experimented with drugs as I can see how easy it would be for me to be hooked. I did think about it quite a bit afterwards and how nice it would be to be in labour again and have another shot of diamorphine!

For the record I only had gas and air with DS2.

Blandmum · 19/03/2007 20:10

Pethedine isn't heroin, Diamorphine is heroin. Pethedine is a related drug.

I have been given heroin (AKA diamorphine) twice, when I was in labout with dd. Worked fine. Never wanted to 'do' it again!
