I don't like her politics. I think she has said and done some stupid things. If I lived in hackney, I would never vote for her.

But I saw this on Facebook and in the interest of fairness, wanted to share it. Because it makes some very good points. I still don't like her. I still think she's out of her depth and incompetent. But I hold my hands up and say, this at least made me rethink and appreciate that she has done some good things too.

Anyone in the public eye puts themself up for both adoration and vilification, it's part of it. Yes, she has achieved a lot in her life, but that doesn't absolve her recent performances in the media. And if she's not firing on all cylinders because she's not well then she should do the responsible thing and ring in sick, not make a spectacle of her party.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 07/06/2017 21:00

There's another thread about this.

loveyouradvice · 07/06/2017 21:01

Wow! I did ... and thank you! Fab fab fab post.... deeply appreciated and makes me ashamed of how I have been thinking about Diane Abbott these last few days....

HangingRock · 07/06/2017 21:04

Thank you for posting that.

Guitargirl · 07/06/2017 21:06

I live in Hackney and Diane Abbott is my MP. I am a Labour supporter but I usually vote Green in a general election. This is such a safe Labour seat, I am not a fan of Diane Abbott and would never usually vote for her. She does get an extremely rough time on social media and mainstream media. However, I do think it's such a shame that the debate gets so muddied with calls of racism and misogyny. It's true that in some cases what has been thrown at her are racist taunts. But I also think that it should be acknowledged that it's perfectly valid to question her competency and suitability for the job without the risk of being called a racist just because you have questioned the competency of a black female.

Having said that she has put up with an inordinate amount of stick for years and years. Witnessing her public appearances over the last few weeks has been like watching a mental health car crash unfolding. I hope she gets the rest now which she clearly needs and deserves.

AfroBrown · 07/06/2017 21:10

Diane was a pioneer of her time deserves respect but has done some silly things recently.

Her past cannot be overlooked and she needs to be respected more especially in the black community.

The abuse she suffers is horrendous but many blacks suffer that and they don't need to be in the public eye. That's just the way it goes in society unfortunately.

Sycamorewindmills · 07/06/2017 21:13

Whilst Dianne Abbott had success as an MP, she simply didn't cut it in the shadow cabinet. I'm relieved for her that she has been removed from the position. It was uncomfortable viewing.

Aridane · 07/06/2017 21:13

Worth reading - had no idea she was such a trail blazer

Guitargirl · 07/06/2017 21:15

I probably should have also said that I am voting for Diane Abbott tomorrow. In my personal experience she has not been all that as an MP. I have had cause twice to contact her and have not received a reply either time. BUT tomorrow I need to express somehow the strongest possible opposition to the possibility of another Tory government whose policies I loathe with every fibre of my being. So, tomorrow Diane Abbott will be getting my vote.

CoolCarrie · 07/06/2017 21:29

Maybe JC took notice of the comments on MN about her and saw that she really needed to go, her ego was unlikely to let her back out until now. She certainly isn't Mo !

PlayOnWurtz · 07/06/2017 21:33

Urgh you could have warned us it was a Jack Monroe article. Can't stand her.

VladmirsPoutine · 07/06/2017 21:35

Anyone in the public eye puts themself up for both adoration and vilification, it's part of it.

Do you think that racism and misogyny should be part of that rhetoric?

VeraGrant · 07/06/2017 21:39

As I said on another thread, we can't have a prospective Home Secretary (one of the 3 most important offices of state) in the role simply because we feel sorry for her and/ or because of past glories.

We have to judge candidates on their ability in the here and now. Can anyone truly disagree with that?

If DA is genuinely ill, it was spectacularly cruel to leave her to flounder on national tv/ radio for 9 weeks.

Dandandandandandandan · 07/06/2017 21:46

I'd never heard of jack munroe! Just saw post on fb and thought, hmmm made me think

I agree Vera cruel and exceedingly incompetent.

AfroBrown · 07/06/2017 22:07

Barbarianmum No I am saying you don't need to be in the public eye to receive that type of abuse. unfortunately that level of racism is still relevant in today's society. Being in the public just increases the amount you receive.

VladmirsPoutine · 07/06/2017 22:14

I thought your wording was frankly dodgy but I agree with the meaning behind the statement AfroBrown. In fact racism in 2017 Britain is astonishing.

Guitargirl · 07/06/2017 22:16

AfroBrown - I knew what you meant.

BarbarianMum · 07/06/2017 22:18

Ok yes, I understand and yes, sadly i totally agree. It is fucking outrageous though.
