To not tip the Ocado driver?

Sayhellotothelittlefella · 31/05/2017 13:15

Just as a bit of background - I am usually the type of person who will leave a tip. I always tip my beautician, my hairdresser and the girl who washes my hair, in restaurants and the usual people at Christmas ( postman, bin men). However I have never thought to tip the Ocado driver, until my last delivery when there was that awkward 'deliberate pause' moment - exactly like on films - when it was obvious that I was meant to be tipping the guy. I've never noticed it on any other occasion but I'm panicking now as I've got a delivery due later and I don't know if I'm expected to tip them?

No tipping here.

We've given one of ours fresh eggs on occasion after one of the dogs scared him by scampering up for a snuggle in the dark behind him but that's it.

RecherchedeTemps · 31/05/2017 13:54

I have never tipped an Ocado driver but I do sometimes tweet about good service and they always respond asking for my order number so they can speak to the driver.

I've also never felt any hesitation about bringing bags in, in fact sometimes they offer and are always cheerful about it.

TheExuberant1 · 31/05/2017 13:55

I didn't think they were even allowed to accept tips. Never tipped them myself.

nemno · 31/05/2017 13:59

I've never tipped, unless it is the Christmas delivery, and never noticed them angling for it in 9 years of using Ocado at least once weekly. But just after handing over the bags I tell him/her how many there are, maybe he thought you would do same.

bornonvalentines · 31/05/2017 14:00

My Ocado guy has to make 2 trips down stone stairs, so always tip £2.

isaulte · 31/05/2017 14:00

I used to tip but now I get a twice-weekly delivery and it was getting ridiculous. I do give my Christmas eve driver something though.

Sunshinesuperman · 31/05/2017 14:02

I tip a couple of pounds if I have spare change but I don't always have it, I don't think they expect it but if they are friendly and helpful I like to.

BillyButtfuck · 31/05/2017 14:06

I had the most handsome Sainsbury's delivery driver, first time he's been but a new time for me. he looks like something out of a Tom Hardy lookalike contest. I tried tipping him and he refused it but said I was lovely for trying, swoons, I'll be booking the same delivery slot next week BlushGrin

YoloSwaggins · 31/05/2017 14:07

I have literally never tipped anyone in the UK apart from restaurants, and even then I'm reluctant to because it's such an outdated practise.

mollyminniemo · 31/05/2017 14:10

I always give £1.50-£2- they seem genuinely taken aback and incredibly grateful. For this alone, I think its worth it.

limitedperiodonly · 31/05/2017 14:11

I'd tip the grocery delivery guy a couple of quid and I live on the ground floor. It's just what I'd do. But I never order online. Dreadful extravagance Wink

I prefer to go in person so I can choose yellow sticker items. Last night were two packs of Chinese crispy chilli beef down £3.40 to 84p for two and two packs of 250g chicken livers down £1 to 24p each. That's eight meals for £2.16 - give or take the rice and salad and stuff.

We live like kings in this house. Never mind the MN everlasting chicken Wink.

RebeccaCloud9 · 31/05/2017 14:11

He's employed, and paid, by Ocado to do a job. You pay for delivery. It is not your responsibility to pay him too, even if he does try to make you do it by making you feel awkward.

meettherussians · 31/05/2017 14:12

What a tightwad you are yolo its outdated in your head because you clearly cant remember the last time you did it, not to others.

WellTidy · 31/05/2017 14:13

I don't tip when I have a supermarket shop delivered (rarely), and don't tip when we have something I have ordered online delivered, but I do tip when we have takeaway delivered. I have never thought why I differentiate.

Inertia · 31/05/2017 14:15

We don't tip Ocado drivers generally, but we do give a fiver for a Christmas drink for whoever delivers at Christmas.

EastEndQueen · 31/05/2017 14:17

I don't think they are allowed to take tips - i tried to tip mine once as we were over 30 mins late home beyond the end of our delivery slot time (been away for the weekend and huge unexpected motorway delays on the drive back) and he kindly waited for us. He was insistent he couldn't take the money.

YoloSwaggins · 31/05/2017 14:19

What a tightwad you are yolo its outdated in your head because you clearly cant remember the last time you did it, not to others.

It's outdated because people used to tip when waiters were paid below minimum wage and RELIED on tips to make up the salary. Like in America, where they're paid like shit.

Now they're paid the same as all other minimum wage/retail/service jobs. So do you tip the cashier at Debenhams? The bus driver? The receptionist at the gym?

squoosh · 31/05/2017 14:19

BillyButtfuck you'll eagerly open your front door next week, silk negligee on your body and a smile on your face, only to find Ernie, the Harry Secombe lookalike has been scheduled in instead of the Tom Hardy clone.

YoloSwaggins · 31/05/2017 14:20

He is paid by the people that employ him, not by me.

Why should I use my salary to top up other people's when they're paid decently? They're not a charity. I already pay tax and NI.

MollyHuaCha · 31/05/2017 14:23

No tipping for supermarket delivery drivers please. Not a trend we need. People who tip make it awkward for those who don't. I'll just stick with hairdressers, taxi drivers and hotel staff.

OrangeJulius · 31/05/2017 14:23

Was he perhaps waiting for you to tell him how many bags you had just given him?

Mine usually ask how many; they clearly don't want to take the time to count if they don't have to.

At any rate, it would never occur to me to tip the Ocado driver.

wisteriainbloom · 31/05/2017 14:23

I am sure that they are not allowed to accept tips when working for Ocado. @ocadoannie?

wisteriainbloom · 31/05/2017 14:26

Speak to Ocado, I have been using them for ten years now and they have always been cheerful, polite and carried shopping through.

Only once have I been upset, he ignored my puppy- how can you ignore a puppy? Shock

loveyouradvice · 31/05/2017 14:29

my 80 year old mum up 4 steep flights of stairs has tried to tip Waitrose and he told her its not allowed - she felt embarrassed not to be doing so....

BillyButtfuck · 31/05/2017 14:31

Squoosh don't tempt fate like that! WinkShock
