When people have painted what are obviously red brick victorian/edwardian houses in colours other than red?

This is apparently a prolific problem in Liverpool, the sheer number of houses which are painted either shit brown or kelly green is ridiculous.
Surely red brick houses should be painted red, or just left to weather a la Coronation Street terraces?
Why are the houses in Liverpool so bastardised?
Is it a problem in other parts of the country?

Or am I just being an unreasonable arse and its actually fine to paint you own house as you choose?

I live near Liverpool (Wirral) and haven't seen it. But yes, I thought of Brighton, too. Love those little houses there.

I think painting red bricks red is weirder!

This pebbledash travesty against red brick is close to where I live. No idea what they were thinking!

It looks utterly ridiculous, I see it every day as I work in Liverpool and have always wondered what it was all about (especially the shit brown ones)

I'm on the Wirral and thankfully none of that nonsense happens over here.

'Stone' cladding over brick is another horror. I've seen otherwise nice brick terraces interrupted by different colours of 'stone' cladding. Grim.

But then I often wonder why people in semi's can't agree to match up windows/paintcolour to each other - so much nicer imo.

Still in the fight to Mark territories and 'be different' taste often goes south.

One by me has been pebble-dashed and painted white. I don't see the point in painting them at all. I love my red brick.

Why do they paint bricks? Brick doesn't need painting. Round here all the brick houses stay as brick -I'm
far too lazy to do any unnecessary painting. I don't even get round to doing the painting that actually really does need doing!

The ones in Bristol are all different colours- it looks amazing.

YABU. The houses you are talking about are not the £250k gorgeous town houses they are houses like mine in run down areas.

I don't mind it if the whole streets painted somewhat matching colours (so all pastels or brights or shades of muted grey and green and blue). It does look fairly crap when there's still lots of red brick interspersed.

There's a house in Folkestone painted blue with paw prints like Blue's Cllues. I love it. And I love all the stripy ones ad brightly coloured ones people do. No class at all, me.

unless they are using 'breathable' paint, they will be damaging their homes. Bricks can absorb a huge amount of moisture which they then lose via evaporation. If they are covered in paint that does not allow this to happen, damp will occur, and eventually the bricks suffer from spalling whereby they lose their outer layer due to a cycle of freezing/thawing, which in extreme cases can lead to the collapse of the wall.

I like painted pebble dash - think Beaumaris. But painting bricks is all sorts of wrong.

I remember seeing this in Liverpool too. I love brightly painted houses, like in sea-side towns, but the painted brick - if I recall it was often painted the same colour as red bricks - was strange.

Loved Liverpool though Seeing the Liver birds was v special.

If you are going to bother to paint at all then surely the purpose would be to change the colour, not just go over the top of it with something that makes it look the same.

Providing it's done well and attractive colours are picked I can't get too upset about this. But what constitutes 'attractive' or 'acceptable' colours will change every 10-15 years or so.

Agree that any form of cladding or pebble dashing is the work of the devil though.
