Gig on Saturday in Manchester

Got tickets to seemy favourite band in Manchester (cricket ground) on Saturday. 50,000 capacity so a massive event.

My GF is coming with me but her family are begging us not to go. I personally think it will be safe what with the huge police presence.

However, I would feel terrible if something DID happen.

AIBU to still go? Or should I stand firm and not let recent events affect my choices? I have given GF the option to not go if she doesn't feel safe.

You go and let GF make the decision for herself. Don't force or plead with her to go because if you do and she's worried she won't enjoy it anyway and neither will you.

Agree with the above, it's her choice to make... I would def go but that's me! It'll be far more secure this Saturday than it would have been last Saturday and you both would have gone without a thought then. But I get that if someone is going to be really anxious all the way through it won't be enjoyable and therefore pointless. I'm sure a friend would jump at the chance to go with you if she doesn't want to go.

You go. Let her decide for herself. I was in Manchester last night for a gig. It was very much business as usual.

I asked if she is worried, I said her safety is my priority so if she has any doubts I will take someone else and she seems ok! I'm sure a few pre gig cocktails will calm her down if she does get nervous.

Its her family that are getting to me.

Driving to work this morning and reached the city and her sister happened to be in the car next to me beeping and asking if we are still going tomorrow! I said yes and she shook her head!

I would imagine security will be huge at that event. You can lessen your risk anyway by making plans on where to go in/out and when to do so. There will be zero risk in the ground as I assume they will scan people.

It's not her families choice unless she's under 18.

If she wants to go, that's her choice! I personally wouldn't miss out on seeing my favourite band.

Lots of my friends are going to the same gig and they're really looking forward to it. There's extra security on so allow a bit of extra time for searches etc and they have asked that people avoid bringing bags where possible. Hope you have a great time.

coughing Yes it sounds like they are prepared. I have been so looking forward to it but I cant help but feel sad for the lives lost on Monday. My heart aches for them, this concert is going to be emotional.

I should have been going to this gig but am in the police and rest days have been cancelled. Security has been ramped right up. If I weren't working I'd be going, and so would all my colleagues. I'm listening to the sound check currently and it sounds amazing. Have a great time!

I am doing Manchester half on Sunday, I am anxious I won't lie but I am still doing it. I think unless you both thing anxiety will stop you enjoying it then go.

storey I think it's awful rest days have been cancelled, you all need the time out more now than ever!

If it helps maybe contact the venue before hand and ask what safety procedures they have in place? I don't think you need to this and I wouldn't personally , but if she feels she needs to reassure them.
Also just for the record - I live in Manchester and the efficacy of the police and other services this last week has been second to none. The city has really pulled together wonderfully! ♥

Im going to a gig in manc on saturday too. Anything could happen, anywhere, at any time. We can't just stop going out.

OP, they are indeed awesome live. I saw them open for The Stone Roses last June and I have to say I thought they were the better band.

I drove past the cricket ground today and they are scanning people on the gates as they enter. Security will be tight

Of course you must go. There is no more likelihood of another attack in Manchester than there is of an attack in London, Birmingham, Newcastle or Glasgow. We can't let these maniacs affect our lives.
