Our dining room carpet is absolutely disgusting. It was pretty grim when we moved in (2 years ago) but we've since acquired a dog who is only semi-house trained. The carpet stinks, is stained and has weird stuff (chewing gum?) embedded into it.

We'll be decorating the dining room next year and this would, of course, be the right time to replace the carpet. Because our dog sleeps in the dining room and its a walk through to the kitchen, we'll probably replace the carpet every couple of years. But, it stinks and it never feels clean so I want to replace it cheaply now with the view that we can replace it next year when we've decorated.

DH says I'm BU and we should wait.

I say I'm NBU because it stinks and we can afford it.

So, AIBU?

Can you get it cleaned by a professional?

We could do but I don't see the point. There are bald patches, manky stuff embedded in it. It needs to go so I think why not just get rid of it now.

I'd get rid but put laminate, karndean, or similar down. Easier to clean and will last forever.

I wouldn't carpet. I agree with the poster above.

I would buy a new one but with carpet off the roll in carpet right. It's only about £6 a sqm.

I did this in two of our bedrooms (spare rooms) and although cheap they've lasted really well (4 years so far and still don't need replacing yet).
I also carpeted the front porch myself to save money. Although not perfect, it does the job and is far better than what was there before!

We actually have original Victorian red quarry tiles under the carpet which I would love to clean up and expose but my house is cold enough as it is and we need something on the floor.

I do quite like parquet floors but would a laminate parquet look cheap?

If you have that lovely floor ... then why not just lift the carpet and put a large and cheap rug down if you think it will feel cold?

Why bother?! The new carpet will stink in no time. Just get laminate that you can mop.

Oooh I missed that you have a lovely tiled floor. Nice big rug to go under the table, do that!

My only concern with the tiled floor is that it'll be absolutely freezing. Our house has no cavity wall insulation and the dining room gets sun for about 48 minutes and 7 seconds at about 5pm so it's bloody freezing in the dining room. I'm worried that having tiled floor will make it feel/look/actually be colder.

Ohdear I don't think it'll end up as bad as it is now- dog very rarely pisses on the carpet any more and we're not dirty bastards like the people who lived here before. But that's why we were thinking of replacing it every couple of years- so we could have nice cosy carpets (see above) but wouldn't get to the stage where they're manky.

Dont put laminate down which looks cheap and move when you stand on it, if you have victorian tiles. Remove carpet. Clean tiles. Nice rug. Job done. Lucky you having the tiles x

If you want carpet, buy a carpet cleaner. I used to have a dog and also have cream carpets, once a week I'd give them a clean, they never looked manky or smelled.

I'd agree with your husband. Get a proffesional into clean the carpets. Then buy a carpet cleaner and keep them clean, and then replace next year.

DH's parents have actually agreed to give us their professional carpet cleaning machine but they won't visit us until August because me and DH aren't drinking alcohol until August

londonarch Oh I know, we're very lucky to have the tiles. I have no idea what state they're in but there's a company that cleans up original tiles that's always around this area. I'm just worried it'll be so cold in the dining room.

Could you not take up the carpet now , clean the tiles up etc and then give it a go while summers on its (hopefully) way .
If it's so bad you can't cope with it then carpet it for the winter , at least your be rid of the carpet that's manky ATM .

Last year, we had out kitchen done. Kitchen comes straight off dining room. The kitchen is ultra-modern and painted a very pale green. I want the dining room walls also a pale-ish green. Will red tiles look odd?

Seems very wasteful, whats the issue with replacing it now and just keeping it when you redecorate?

I wouldn't do green, I'd go for nice bright white or very light cream walls with big ornate pieces on the wall for interest.

Gah Sorry, I wasn't clear. I meant we'd replace it when we decorate if it needed to be replaced. If we had a new one now and then it didn't need replacing when we decorate, obviously we'd keep it!

Lady I want it quite arts and crafts so I'm trying not to go for plain walls. I'm thinking of this paper in a green-y tone.

I was thinking it was very extravagant, Im only jealous though, I havent replaced my front room carpet for 5 years and I swear its going shiny in parts

carpets and untrained pets dont mix- it will always be a grotty mess

either use the tiles already there or a laminate floor

Rip up the manky carpet and clean up the tiles, get a cheap big rug and try it out over the summer, if it is too cold by autumn then put down a new carpet. Totally wasteful to replace every 2 years unnecessarily. I think the tiles would look lovely with green walls, and you could get a rug with green accents too to bring it together. I loathe fitted carpets, much prefer a hard floor with rugs, but I do collect them so I may be biased!
