for wanting to replace our carpet even though it might only be temporary?

Our dining room carpet is absolutely disgusting. It was pretty grim when we moved in (2 years ago) but we've since acquired a dog who is only semi-house trained. The carpet stinks, is stained and has weird stuff (chewing gum?) embedded into it.

We'll be decorating the dining room next year and this would, of course, be the right time to replace the carpet. Because our dog sleeps in the dining room and its a walk through to the kitchen, we'll probably replace the carpet every couple of years. But, it stinks and it never feels clean so I want to replace it cheaply now with the view that we can replace it next year when we've decorated.

DH says I'm BU and we should wait.

I say I'm NBU because it stinks and we can afford it.

So, AIBU?

Gah Yeah, sorry, that was rubbish. I meant we could/can replace when we decorate if needed. Sorry!

I need to sit DH down when he gets home and have a serious chat about the tiles and my plans for them. I like the idea of trying them for a year and seeing how we go then deciding on carpets or other flooring.

Why not get waterproof laminate instead?

A carpet sounds like lunacy in your situation (dining room and incontinent dog)

@GameOldBirdz love that paper!
How old is the house?

We just laid parquet in the lounge, and it did def feel colder! Bought a big rug though so when kids fall off sofa they don't bang their heads so hard.

I'm hoping it will last decades!

The house was built in 1898 so right at the end of the Victorian period.
