C-Section and make-up?

I have a planned c-section on Tuesday and at our pre-op class and clinic visit the midwife mentioned that nail polish was okay, as long as it was pale/neutral, as was makeup.

I mentioned to OH that I planned on painting my nails a pale nude/pink colour and will be applying my normal make up in the morning before we go. He thinks I'm bonkers and cannot understand why I'd do it.

My normal routine is concealer (my hormonal skin is horrendous atm), a mineral powder foundation, eyebrows filled in lightly, mascara and lip balm. It's not ott but enough to stop me feeling self concious about spots when in public, nail polish helps me feel more together.
I hope that it will make me feel slightly more myself post birth and during the first visits from family.

Aibu in applying it before we go?
Would you apply it if you had the chance?
Am I being awfully vain (OH hasn't said this, just thinks makeup before an operation is bonkers)?

Never in the world would I be bothered with shit like that, but if it makes you feel happier, go for it.

I wore foundation and blusher the day of my c/s because that's all I wear anyway. I wasn't told to remove it, it didn't even occur to me not to wear it as it's been my daily routine for about 10 years

When I had my planned section I wasn't allowed nail polish (so they can see re: oxygen levels) and no makeup was allowed. I suppose it can vary from hospital to hospital but you should ask them if/what is allowed.

I would do exactly the same!! Definitely do whatever will make you comfortable. When I gave birth to ds I wished I looked better for the first photo together!

I don't think you're BU. Not many people would be bothered but if it's part of your routine and will make you feel calm etc then do it. It's all about you feeling good.

One of the questions on the theatre paperwork will ask if makeup and nail varnish are removed.

Do whatever displacement activity you need to manage your nerves and whatever makes you feel good.

It's a good idea not to wear make up, definitely not nail polish. I'd check with your consultant but you're likely to have to remove it.

And re nail polish I would just not do one finger - if you can bear it

They won't be able to make checks on you as well with makeup as without and will probably be asked to take it off.You'll have plenty of time to reapply after baby's been born.

I would ! I washed my hair and styled it as normal and put on make up ( normal light day to day make up not like I was off clubbing ) when I went into labour

The reason they say no nail varnish is because the anaesthetist checks your finger tips by pressing the nails to make sure that oxygen is getting through (or something medical like that).

Might be different these days, but 8 years ago I wasn't allowed nail varnish.

Sorry, what? If you're not supposed to have nail polish on for clinical reasons, how exactly will having nude-coloured polish on instead help?

I know the MW has said it's okay but you might be asked to remove your nail polish and makeup before theatre by the staff in there.

I'm a theatre nurse and all makeup/nail polish has to be removed in the ward prior to coming down. I don't work in obstetrics as part of my main job but I've been there for various reasons and none of the women in for elective sections had makeup or nail polish on. Whether that was personal choice or theatre decision I'm not sure.

I agree with him. You are going into hospital, not going to work or for a night out.

I agree that you should check whether the hospital is OK with having painted nails.

What is the no nail polish rule for (in some cases)? I've always wondered.

And no, YANBU. I'd do the same. I don't go the shop up the road without a bit of makeup up. Certainly wouldn't have wanted to scare the shit out my baby when faced with me after coming into the world!

The theory sounds good but I think the reality wouldn't be.

I didn't get the chance as it was an EMCS but, given how I felt afterwards, it would have been worse with make up on. Sticky, uncomfortable and too long on a hot ward before being able to wipe it off.

That said, YANBU for wanting to as it's an unusual situation to plan for! Good luck

I did the same, make up (very much like I would to go to work rather than a night out) and hair washed and straightens for my elcs, I just wanted to feel clean & comfortable

I'd maybe not paint your nails though, I have heard somewhere they're not too keen on it but light make up will be fine, good luck!

I wasn't allowed so it might vary between hospital to hospital. It would have slid off in the HDU bit of maternity though. It was soooooo hot in there. I did however apply it before photos!!
