To be worried about baby's development

DD is 6 months old and I'm a FTM so everything is new and everything is a worry!

DD doesn't roll over and doesn't really show any interest in doing so. I try to encourage her and she's happy enough on her tummy for a short time, but doesn't make any effort to move around. She can't sit unaided either.

My HV told me that if she couldn't roll by 6 months it could be cause for concern. I'm also surrounded by mums with much younger babies who all seem to roll, sit, babble etc...

Am I worrying unnecessarily or should I be concerned?

Does DD meet other milestones? E.g. reach and grab toys? Is she generally doing well?

Some babies do things in a different order E.g. crawl then roll, bum shuffle (no crawling) then walk. So no need to worry.

DS took ages to sit, never crawled, and didn't babble. But then all of a sudden he turned 12 months and then started walking and talking all at once. Don't be too concerned just yet.

I wouldn't worry yet. What else does she do?

It's hard to tell really - I think it's probably fine but worth mentioning to the HV again. Is she generally a happy baby? Maybe she just isn't that interested in moving yet? Is she a babbler? DS rolled and crawled really early but hardly made a sound until he was 9 months old. He was a generally grumpy dissatisfied baby and improved a lot once he could move - even now he's a toddler of few words but has brilliant fine and gross motor skills. He's a doer, not a talker - and even though I know this, I'm still massively concerned about his speech, though he's had a SALT assessment and they say he's in the normal range.

I don't think it's unreasonable to keep an eye on things, but do try not to worry to much as it won't help anything, it'll just mess you up. Try to encourage her to roll by putting her favourite toys etc just out of reach and see if she'll stretch for them... that's often the first stage of rolling.

My now 3 year old never rolled or crawled! He just got up and walked at 12 months. All of his baby mates were first with some milestones and last with others.

Mine is 6 months this week and has literally just started rolling out of nowhere (and now she won't fucking stop so don't be too excited for it )

A friend's baby is a few weeks older than mine I and doesn't roll at all. My nephew was 8 months before he showed any signs of rolling. Some babies just aren't as interested in certain milestones as others I guess. My baby is not very vocal compared to others.

Mine is not rolling at 10.5 months and I'm not at all worried. She's just not seeing the need. The hv made a bit of a fuss, but said 12 months is more of a concern marker not six. Don't worry at all

She is a happy baby, we get smiles all day long and the occasional giggle. She's interested in her toys and can reach and grab things. She loves us holding her up in a standing position and if I try to help her sit, she'll try to push up to stand. She has days when she makes a lot of noise as well, she's just discovered how high pitched she can scream (happy scream!).

Maybe she'll just get up and walk one day and miss out all the in between stuff!

It's just so hard being around so many other mums and babies all the time as we go to a lot of baby groups, and seeing them all sitting and rolling and she'll just lie there smiling at me.

She sounds fine to me.

Out of my 3, only one did the traditional roll over/crawl/wall. The other two bum shuffled to walking.

I think DD1 was well past one before it occurred to her to roll over.

Ds is 6 months too and similarly to your baby he is not rolling. He seems to be otherwise doing ok tho he us a bit behind the curve on a few things (like sleeping...) I try not to worry and enjoy the fact that when I put him down he stays where I left him :)

The baby groups are your problem. This is why we stay in and watch Netflix by ourselves or we walk round the park sometimes!

I don't think my baby rolled. She's fine though. Sometimes they skip one thing though. Is she strong enough to roll if she felt like it?

Neither of mine rolled! Both crawled at 7 months and walked at 12 months but never rolled until after they could crawl.

DD rolled very early, but did not sit unaided until about 8 months, did not crawl until 10 months, or indeed make any effort to crawl. All the other babies seemed to be doing this much earlier. However. she was the first to walk at 12 months...
I think they all do things at their own rate. My DD was never really bothered about trying to do things until she could actually do them if you know what I mean..

Mine never rolled once as a baby, bum shuffled at about 12 months, walked at 21 months. By 23 months you wouldn't have noticed anything doing different between him and his peers.
Luckily the hv was fairly chilled out about it. I wouldn't worry at this stage!

Sounds like DD. She could sit but not roll at that age, but LOVED being held up so she could push to stand etc. Eventually she rolled at about 7 months, but only one way for ages! Walked bang on average, now at 20 months runs everywhere.

If your DD is doing what you say and is social, I wouldn't worry at 6 months, just keep practising with her. She sounds lovely :)

Mine were both late walkers. I used to get (with a head tilt) 'is MiniOhWot walking yet?'. When I said no, I'd get a cloying sympathetic look in reply, even though I wasn't actually worried. Used to drive me nuts!

Anyway, babies develop at different times. Plus they process the world differently. MiniOhwot wasnt walking as he was learning to talk. Plus he's smart and didn't see why he should bother when he was the quickest crawler in town.

If your baby is interacting with you and happy, I'm sure she's fine. Keep up tummy time. Keep talking to your hv about her.

I know it's easy to say but please don't worry. My eldest daughter is now five and was like your daughter. She walked at 9months but didn't roll over until around 8. She was only interested in being on her feet!

Babies are all different, try not to compare. I have 3, a 6 yo and twin 1 yo's and even the twins developed differently from each other. Your DD sounds fine to me but if you are concerned speak to your HV or GP. They can put your mind at rest, they will also be checking her development anyway and would tell you if they were concerned. It's completely natural to worry

It was crawling with mine. He rolled quite early and could sit, but didn't crawl until he was nearly 9 months old and it was laughably slow, plus he used his face as a fifth limb. Then he walked at 11 months. If rolling is your only concern, my guess would be that your little girl is just doing things in a different order to what it says in the manual.

I wouldn't worry yet if I was you and enjoy the fact that you don't have to get up and roll her over to her back in the middle of the night several times as that was fun for a week or two

Hi OP. Please don't worry. I was just like you with my daughter - everyone's child seemed to walk so quickly and it seemed I was doing everything wrong. I now have a second child and he's only just started to crawl (relatively later than most) but I'm not worried. Please don't let everyone else panic you - it all averages out after a while.

My lg has just turned 7 months and does not roll, hates tummy time and is rejecting all solids....but two weeks ago sat unaided out of the blue and started babbling. I am learning to chill and not compare her to other babies/stage expectations/google results! Its tough going though and as soon as one worry sorts its self another appears

try not to worry, she sounds like a lovely happy girl.

I have twin nephew and niece and for the first six months of their lives the nephew did everything first. Next 12 months it's a different story, his sister is running rings around him.
