To shave or not to shave

DD 9 asked to shave her legs. I said no chance, no way, you are way too young. Now wandering what is wrong with her shaving. I asked my local salon and they told me to bring her in to get them waxed other 9 year olds come. AIBU?

Electric razor? I wouldn't be giving blades or putting a 9yr old through waxing

If she has asked to then I guess she is embarrassed about her hairy legs... in which case why not help her find her preferred method? I remember cutting my legs to ribbons at not much older with my Dad's razor (hence me saying find a method) but given that there are lots of options these days, I don't see why anyone should have to wait simply based on their age!
Both of my girls shaved their legs from about 10 because they were embarrassed ...kids can tease, and I showed them how.

I've just bought a cheap Remington lady shave for my ten year old DD. I didn't want her using a blade in the shower and she wasn't keen on the idea of waxing.

I bet the salon did. Extra money for them to drum up business with children. Frankly I think it's ridiculous. It's one thing to be interested in your mum's razor if you've seen her shaving out of curiosity, quite another to take your DD to get waxed. Where will it end? Why not throw in a facial and some acrilylic nails at the same time....
Why would anyone start all this so early? Let her be a child.

I recommend an Electric razor too. If she has hairy legs she's not too young but teach her how to safely use it

If her legs are hairy and razors are designed to get the hairs off and she wants them off then why not?
She has voiced her request. . Listen to her request and she will confide in you about more important things in the future.

DD is 11 and uses an electric razor on her legs and armpits.

I don't see a problem with shaving. Cheap, effective and quick. I helped my dd at the start, and after a while she got the hang of it. It's hard being a dark-haired girl in school...kids can be cruel.

I think it's so sad that girls of that age are already wanting to shave, to get rid of natural hair.

Sadly, I was and am exactly the same. I save my bodily hair and know I'm conforming to what's expected of a girl. I'd probably have been upset if my parents hadn't let me do it. Frustrating.

Let the poor girl shave, if she wants to. I started about 10/11 and it was nothing to do with society and everything to do with itchy, hairy legs.

Boys/men do body wax - they do in the gym I attend.

But I cant say I've ever given other peoples bodies that much thought. However, it's an obsession on here.

I've never heard of a boy my age who does. Yet nearly all girls I know (including myself) do.

I don't want to, either. I'd rather not bother. Yet I have done from a very young age, because it's what's expected of girls.

You used to get little mitts of a very fine sand paper that rub off the hair. I'm pretty sure you can still get them in boots. I used them when I was a teenager. They left my skin nice and smooth too..

You must lead a very secluded life.

A large amount of young women I see shave all their visible body hair including arms. Many of the youths in the gym do too. Even the chaps of Eastern/Mediterranean origin.

I would definitely let her. It's a bit of a shock when your daughter wants to do things that you perhaps thought she might want to do when older, but kids at school are aware and she's probably worried she'll be teased.
