Motorbike at 5:15am

Motorbike in the street revs for exactly 6 minutes every morning, before pulling off at 5:21am every morning.

I don't get back to sleep after this, it wakes my 8yo ds and it's making us very very tired and grumpy.

The end of the street is terraces so its impossible to work out which house the owner lives in.

Would anyone else be annoyed at this and please tell me we can do something about it?! It's starting to drive me crazy!!

I'd be annoyed too, but if someone needs to get to work and that's their transport then there's not much you can do. Could be that it took 6 mins t get it started. I drive a 20 year old car which is loud and does not start first time most times, I'm cincious of it at 6am when I go to work but it's my mode of transport

IamSpartacusTheGardener · 02/05/2017 19:04

It probably doesn't help your situation but if you are looking for a reason it might be a 2-stroke engine. These bikes need 5 mins of warming up before they will give any power. I've heard stories before of neighbours who find it very annoying.

I'll get my coat.

sunshineandsparkles · 02/05/2017 19:07

Yeah he clearly is going to work and I get that but it's killing me. I have a stressful job and was falling asleep this afternoon!
Spartacus...funny...

LakieLady · 02/05/2017 19:07

Just asked DP (who's ridden motorbikes for over 40 years and has had dozens of them) about the 2-stroke thing and he says that's rubbish and that 2-strokes warm up more quickly than 4-strokes.

whippetwoman · 02/05/2017 19:12

I must live near you OP because a very VERY loud motorbike or moped goes down my road every weekday morning at 5.30 am exactly which means I cannot have the bedroom window open ever. Still wakes me up without the window being open sometimes!

Asmoto · 02/05/2017 19:18

I'd be annoyed, but feel sorry for them having to leave for work so early so I think I'd just try to feel grateful that I had (in my case) another hour and ten minutes in bed. I wouldn't want to complain about something they probably have no choice about and would change if they could.

sunshineandsparkles · 02/05/2017 19:25

But they get home at 3pm, whereas I'm still having to keep awake for a few more hours of work at that point. I've work shifts, and it's torturous, but now I feel I'm working shifts and a 9-5 job and it's killing me!!

Lakie

Opinion seems to be divided on this one. I will bow to your DP's superior knowledge as I ride a V-four but a small amount of research will reveal owners of 2-strokes cold starting their bikes in the way the OP is experiencing. We now know they are wrong. Who is going to tell them? Smile

I'm outta here!

gleam · 02/05/2017 19:47

When I had a 2 stroke I didn't have to warm it up for 6 minutes. Confused

Perhaps they've got an illegally loud exhaust on it?

sunshineandsparkles · 02/05/2017 20:23

Gleam! You used the word illegal!! Is there a hint there may be something I can do about this?!

polarpercy · 02/05/2017 20:44

I have absolute sympathy as our neighbour had/has a very loud motorbike that he likes to sit on and rev until the end of time itself (slight exaggeration). The one thing that solved the early morning, and I mean silly early morning like yours, was going and speaking to neighbour. They've got a reputation for being abrupt. But, when I spoke to them about it waking the whole house up they were reasonable. He now parks bike round on main road on days that he wants it early, which seems fair!

bigchris · 02/05/2017 20:46

Would ear plugs work for you ?

ThreeLeggedHaggis · 02/05/2017 20:46

What a nightmare. :(

Can't you walk down the road one morning at 5:15 to catch them and explain? It might be that they need to do this (although I'm Hmm at that) but it might be that they don't, and can stop. Sometimes people just don't think.

EllaHen · 02/05/2017 20:50

Sounds awful op. Truly awful. In my last house, I hated people running their car engine at about 6am. A bike engine at 5.15am would send me over the edge.

Nothing useful to add but that you have my sympathy. Sleep is so important. I really feel for your son.

P1nkP0ppy · 02/05/2017 20:54

The twerp over the road used to start up his bike and 5.30 then go back in the house for 30 minutes 😡
Luckily someone nicked it last week, hopefully he won't be getting another.

DoItTooJulia · 02/05/2017 20:57

If you can find out which house it belongs to (stake out!) contact your noise team (Environmental Health) at your LA. They'll be able to help-but you need to know what address they're writing to.

sunshineandsparkles · 02/05/2017 21:05

I'm a teeny petite nothing and I don't fancy challenging anyone at 5:15am. Trying my best to work out the owner but I would have to be sitting on the other side of the street to see...

OP posts:
IamalsoSpartacus · 02/05/2017 21:24

Are you somewhere fairly flat where it would be possible to push the bike to the end of the road before starting? That would be a polite suggestion to make, and I've certainly done it when possible with my bikes.

polar, your neigbour is lucky the bike hasn't been nicked! There is an epidemic of bike nicking at the moment and the police don't make it a priority.

SharkiraSharkira · 02/05/2017 22:06

I'm not sure about the difference between 2 stroke/4 stroke with regards to starting up but I know some bikes, (ones with a manual choke?) do need a few minutes to warm up adequately before they will run properly, especially on cold mornings. Appreciate that isn't helpful to you op but they probably aren't doing it on purpose to annoy you.

furryelephant · 02/05/2017 22:15

I feel for you OP Sadmy NDN opens his garage (loudly), starts his scooter/bike type contraption then slams the garage at 4.45am?! At first I thought oh poor sod that's earlier but now it wakes my DD I have much less sympathy Hmm

Kentnurse2015 · 02/05/2017 22:16

Earplugs?!?!

TypicallyEnglishMustard · 02/05/2017 22:25

I hate the sound of motorbikes revving, so that would annoy me, too. Sympathies OP, it's not a nice noise. I find it quite frightening actually!

I don't think the time is so early though that you should be falling asleep at work in the afternoon, though!

Dishwashersaurous · 02/05/2017 22:29

It's only an hour or so earlier than most people are getting up really.

Ear plugs

Dishwashersaurous · 02/05/2017 22:31

And you say he gets back at three, so if you know who it is going and talk to them

Notcontent · 02/05/2017 22:34

It's not only an hour before most people get up!!!
