To have the urge to spend £40 on a dress for a . . .

daughter's 4th birthday?

Ooooo.

I saw it in a shop window by chance when a bus I was on broke down.

It's in her family's tartan.

But cut just right for her summer birthday.

She'd look so lovely in it.

With some little red shoes.

Oooo, the photos!

I think I might be able to cajole it out of my mother .

She's a sucker for things like this.

I'll snap a photo of it tomorrow and email it to her.

It's so, so pretty and absolutely perfect for her colouring and her hair.

She loves dresses.

I feel better about this purchase already.

I can just see DD1's sweet face lighting up when she sees the dress.

'Oh, Mummy! It's so pretty! Can I put it on?'

'Of course, you can, sweetpea!'

She'd let me brush her long hair - she never whinges about it when she's wearing a nice dress - and tie a ribbon in it.

There's a fabric shop just up the road.

you are only allowed to buy the dress if we get to see a photo of her looking gorgeous with her tights, and her beautifully brushed hair with its ribbon that matches the dress perfectly.

Does the shop have a website? can you buy it NOW?

no no no. I am the voice of reason - tartan dresses are naff. they all just think they are cute because they are sassenachs and dont know any better

next you will be buying tartan trews for your DP

Buy it, buy it! It'll be good quality at that price and dd2 will get the benefit as well! There's a shop in A'deen that always has little dresses in the window and they look sooo cute.

MIL has bought tartan dresses for both the girls for their 1st birthdays. In her family's tartan, of course .

And it doesn't get 'mair' Scottish than MIL .

My work colleague was brought up in Aberdeen, although we never let her forget she's really from Greenock , and she likes the idea of this dress 'for weans, it's sweet'.

DH wouldn't be caught dead in tartan trews. Or Birkenstocks. Or clogs. The man doesn't even own a brolly - he wears a cap when it rains. I asked him once about putting lotion on his hands and he looked at me glaikit, then said, 'I'm no' doing that.'

I might do black shoes with it.

I'll ask DD1 which she prefers.
