To use a washing basket as a cot??

My baby is 4 weeks, rubbish sleeper & HATES his cot, Moses basket, pram & pretty much everything else!

However, I put him in a washing basket (with a pillow as a mattress underneath) & he's slept for nearly 3 hours!

WIBU to carry on using it??

As long as you remember not to pile dirty laundry on top of him he won't care!!

A pillow is not recommended by lullaby trust. A firm, clean mattress is needed. If you had a mattress made to fit then I can't really think of any reason why the actual basket itself would be an issue.

I think it's fine -as long as the basket hasn't got any sharp edged cut out holes (mines a fucker!) that little hands or feet will get stuck in!

I think you need a better mattress than a pillow. With cots only new cot mattresses are recommended.

Agree, a pillow could be very dangerous. Big SIDs risk.

Cots come with all sorts of safety regulations to reduce SIDS risk, I think mainly to do with air flow. I wouldn't use the washing basket regularly tbh. The Cocoonababy is supposed to be good, have you tried that?

Have you tried a sleepyhead (or cheaper variation like a purflo nest)?

Just buy a cot mattress to the dimesions of the basket (should be straightforward try amazon). Is it because it was under something/ on the ground maybe?

Depends what it's made of...plastic with big square holes (like mine!) - not a good idea. Also what they said ^ about the pillow being a sids risk.

I know what it's like to be desperate for sleep, though!

I've been overfeeding my son!!

I've been offering him his dummy but he never takes it, my mum did it & he took it! All because she rubbed it against his tongue!!

Omg! I honestly put it in his mouth, he'd push it out & id assume he's hungry! I've been over feeding him! Constantly giving him a bloody bottle when all he wanted was his dummy!

I've been making my own life difficult.

If he is taking the milk and not sicking it up, I wouldn't say you were overfeeding. 4 weeks is very little and he is growing an awful lot.

If he takes it, he needs it, just because he took his dummy doesn't mean he's not hungry, at 4 weeks old you give them every thing they will take because the growing is immense

He's ALWAYS throwing his milk up when he's fed on demand.

That's why the doctor put him on gaviscon.

However, with his dummy, he falls back to sleep & goes 3 hours between feeds

Well, as long as he is growing OK, OP. I expect your HCPs are checking that regularly. I have heard, years ago so you'll have to check advise has not changed, a special slanted mattress can help with reflux. It helps the baby keep their food down.

I don't think he has reflux.

Me & doc assumed this solely because of his crying.

He hasn't had gaviscon all day (mum had him & I forgot to put some in changing bag) & he's been fine.

It might have been the pillow...

I don't know OP. Reflux would cause the spitting up, crying and lack of sleep.

Dd slept on a pillow in her Moses basket for weeks.

She wouldn't settle any other way

Pretty sure it's not recommended tho! She got used to it in hospital when in for a week - nurse had her settled on a pillow and she loved it.

I only put him in it for an hour this evening, he's been on the sofa at my mums (her watching him of course) for the afternoon

You can buy the Swedish baby box's now online op if that might be any use to you? It's going to be safer than a washing basket.

Just google swedish baby box there are lots of places that sell them.

No, dont go with whatever works, that's really dangerous advice.

Never ever put a newborn baby to sleep on something soft like a pillow that they could sink into. It only takes a small movement to the side for their mouth to become covered, and newborns don't have the strength to move their head so they can breathe freely again. Smothering is very quick, it could happen while you left the room to make a cup of tea. Pillows are v dangerous for babies.

Oh FFS people! It won't kill him to be in a wash basket!! My son; when we visited or caravan for the first time when he was 11 days old slept in a basket with towels folded to the exact size. Slept like the proverbial!!

Towels are completely different compared to a pillow. Washing basket ok, pillow not ok

Barry, that would be a Finnish baby box, not Swedish. I wouldn't use a pillow in the washing basket.
