To use a washing basket as a cot??

My baby is 4 weeks, rubbish sleeper & HATES his cot, Moses basket, pram & pretty much everything else!

However, I put him in a washing basket (with a pillow as a mattress underneath) & he's slept for nearly 3 hours!

WIBU to carry on using it??

Oh gosh. Now I want a baby. My babies are 23 and nearly 21. Somebody please give me their baby!

Op, it sounds like you know what you are doing and your DM sounds like a great support.

lifesjoys · 28/04/2017 23:19

I wouldn't have left him unsupervised in the basket.

However, he moves his head to ensure he can breath, when I put him on my chest, he always buries his face in my boobs & then turns his face to the side naturally.

He's been lifting his head from a week old (not exaggerating).

Of course, even though he's been lifting his head for nearly a month, I still wouldn't think "oh il leave him to it", I will always ensure things are away from his face, blankets aren't too high (I tuck them under his arms).

DS1 once slept in a drawer .

The drawer was not closed I may hasten to add, or even in the chest.

We arrived on holiday in Greece and the cot we had booked was not in the room. It was late at night so DS ended up.in the suitcase on folded towels . He slept fine .

Yes true.

Trifleorbust · 29/04/2017 10:02

'Big SIDS risk.'

Well actually, small SIDS risk. I hate the hyperbole surrounding this issue. Yes, it is important to be aware of risk factors but the actual risk of SIDS is very, very small. If your baby sleeps on a pillow it is raised a little, but it remains very small.

lifesjoys · 29/04/2017 10:26

Why is the sids risk raised slightly if they slept on a pillow??

I read about any risks all the time to ensure I am fully educated but still o wonder why it is.

I question him spending an entire afternoon away from you at that age to be honest. Sad

TittyGolightly · 29/04/2017 10:33

Because pillows are soft and mattresses aren't.

Trifleorbust · 29/04/2017 10:43

Pillows aren't firm. Your child is more likely to have their breathing obstructed. Plus, pillows are usually slept on by adults: full of skin, dust mites, hair, sometimes residue from smoking etc.

Cheby · 29/04/2017 10:47

Washing basket is fine but pillow is not. They need to be on a firm flat surface to sleep. If he managed to roll over (which can happen even at that age) the pillow would surround his face and he wouldn't be able to turn his head to breathe properly.

Cheby · 29/04/2017 10:48

I can recommend a Sleepyhead though. We got one this time round and it's brilliant.

Really??

You cant fathom out a single reason why a mum may leave her month old with their clearly loving GM for one afternoon?

Gosh.

🙄

QueenofPentacles · 29/04/2017 11:08

My Nan put my baby Mum in the bottom drawer of a large dresser! If your baby likes it. why not? This was from poverty though.
I would agree with others about maybe not a pillow.

Seriously? 🙄

nursy1 · 29/04/2017 11:10

I think it's fine. FFS how did the human race ever survive without all these rules and regs.

Elphaba99 · 29/04/2017 11:11

Completely agree. Folded towels are much firmer than a pillow.

Elphaba99 · 29/04/2017 11:12

My dd is 17 now but I'm intrigued by whatever a Swedish baby box is. googles

Elphaba99 · 29/04/2017 11:16

Ah, Finnish Baby boxes, apparently! Scuse the fact that the link is for the Daily Fail: www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-3664115/New-mothers-given-Finnish-style-baby-boxes-time-reduce-cot-deaths.html

In the absence of a box OP if your baby likes the Washing Basket and it's safe, I'd say replace the pillow with mattress and crack on!

Notso · 29/04/2017 11:33

Have a look at pace feeding for the sickness.

The majority didn't teach childhood, never mind adulthood.

You think rules about safe sleeping hinder the survival of Ben human race? Someone just made them up to annoy people? They are formed and circulated as best practices based on sound scientific research. To keep babies safe and, you know, alive.

**The not Ben!
