because I want to watch telly in bed?

Last night DH didn't want me to watch telly in bed because he wouldn't be able to read with the telly on. (Yes, you're being unreasonable, I can hear you all shout - but wait! There's more). Last week I didn't want DH to read in bed because I wanted to turn the light out and go to sleep and he got made a huge fuss!

So...not reasonable to expect him to be able to read with the telly on in the background but perfectly ok to excpect me to able to go to sleep with the light on????

Have similar probs with my DH. We do both like to go to bed early (usually lights out by 10), but sometimes I start watching a prog in bed and HAVE to see the end of it and he gets all narky saying "I'm exhausted, I have to get up for work in the morning" etc etc, yet when he wants to finish that vital chapter etc and I am lying there trying to sleep he doesn't see the problem. You are not unreasonable in my opinion!!!!

ChippyMinton · 12/03/2007 07:41

You are both being unreasonable. Stay downstairs if the other one wants to sleep.

BigCookLittleCook · 12/03/2007 07:45

But the bed is so COMFORTABLE!

NotQuiteCockney · 12/03/2007 07:50

I have no problem with sleeping while DH reads next to me and vice versa. I wouldn't have a tv in the bedroom, though, I expect I couldn't sleep through that.

ChippyMinton · 12/03/2007 07:50

unreasonable

ghosty · 12/03/2007 08:07

I agree, both unreasonable. Go to the sofa to read or watch telly while the other one sleeps. If the bed is more comfortable then put the telly in a spare room and go there

Sugarmagnolia · 12/03/2007 08:11

ok, ghosty I'll just go put the telly in the spare room right after I finish cleaning out the library and the games room. A spare room would be nice but ours is called a study and 3/4 of it is taken up by a massive A3 colour laser printer.

See "both unreasonable" is not an acceptable answer because that's my whole point! Of course I would agree to turn the telly off for him if he would agree to turn the lights off for me.

I couldn't read or sleep with the tv on, it would drive me nuts.

Don't think I could sleep with the light on either unless I was exhausted.

ghosty · 12/03/2007 08:14

sugarmagnolia .... but I don't know what to suggest
A bed is for sleeping in isnt' it? So you just have to have a deal with your DP - lights out when one of you wants to sleep ....

anorak · 12/03/2007 08:31

We both watch TV in bed if the other one is sleeping. If I'm that tired I just fall asleep regardless. We are both considerate and turn the sound down very very low though. And DH has an eye mask because the light bothers him.

And I do have a rule about no football matches on telly in the bedroom. Far too aggressive sounding to sleep through.

Sugarmagnolia · 12/03/2007 08:38

Actually, I could fall asleep more easily with the telly on than the lights because I sleep with earplugs anyway. He didn't even want it off to go to sleep though - just becuase it would interfere with him reading his computer magazines!

Don't have a telly in the bedroom - what's good for the kids is good for you

Sugarmagnolia · 12/03/2007 08:53

um......DD has a telly in her room too. But that is not the issue here. The issue is that DH is being unfair - one set of rules for him and a different set for me!

OP posts:
suedonim · 12/03/2007 08:54

I couldn't bear a TV in the bedroom. I think it's time to break out the ear plugs and eye masks!

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 12/03/2007 09:00

Lol sugar, steady on - my kids have tv in their bedroom. I'm not having a go.

dejags · 12/03/2007 09:03

I can't bear the tv in the bedroom.

I can sleep with the lights on when DH reads, but if I couldn't, I know he would happily decamp downstairs.

Fat lot of good that was

Sugarmagnolia · 12/03/2007 09:03

Oh, ok sorry. I just know that's one of those issues that sometimes kicks off around here and I didn't want to get into it.

SM's DH didn't want to go to sleep, he wanted to read.

He's being unreasonable.

mylittlestar · 12/03/2007 09:06

He's being unreasonable imo!

I like watching tv in bed. Would go mad if I couldn't!

Can't have one set of rules for him and another for you!

So no, you're not being unreasonable

Sugarmagnolia · 12/03/2007 09:09

thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you

(that's all I wanted to hear)

never had a tv in the bedroom - I love the bedroom being just for relaxing....tv and other stuff ok in the rest of the house, but I try to make the bedroom my little oasis of calm - don't think a tv is necessary at all. If you want to watch tv, watch it downstairs!

But yes, he was being unreasonable if you had to let HIM watch it when you didn't want it on....

get rid of it, then these altercations can't even occur.

mylittlestar · 12/03/2007 10:04

No don't get rid of it!!

I love watching tv in bed!!

Whether it's reading or watching tv, do it wherever you want to!

Nothing wrong with it

Nikki76 · 12/03/2007 10:07

I lurrrrve watching TV in bed!! DH hates it!! Moans all the time - unless there's something raunchy on, in which case he rapidly changes his tune!!! lol!!

Sugarmagnolia · 12/03/2007 10:24

NO STOP ALL OF YOU! I got the answer I wanted to hear, I feel better now and I don't want any more opinions.

OP posts:
mylittlestar · 12/03/2007 10:39

LOL!! - just print out my post saying you're not being unreasonable and he is. Show it to him. End of story
