DC has chicken pox, I'm 32 weeks pregnant!

Daughter woke up today with the obvious rash. I'm so worried what it could do to my baby.

I know I have had it before, so that reduces the risks.

I wouldn't worry if you've already had it. No harm calling your gp to put your mind at rest though.

I came into contact with a child who had chicken pox about 2 weeks before I found out I was pregnant. Midwife said as long as I had had chicken pox (I have) all would be fine. My ds was perfectly healthy.
My best friend found herself in a similar situation to yourself and again was told the same as myself.

If you've had it then your body creates antibodies that will pass to your baby. But you're advised to have a blood test to check your antibody levels to make sure.

My ds had chicken pox when I was pregnant with ds2- as I'd had them as a child it was fine so you've nothing to worry about

My midwife got my immunity tested when I was pregnant as I was exposed to it with dc2 and have never had it.

So spoken to my mother-I was born with chicken pox as she had it in pregnancy with me. So I've had neonatal chicken pox-does this mean I'm at risk still?

I'll ask my doctor for the test.

Are you getting confused with rubella? Varicella is not usually in with the booking bloods.

As long as you have had it you are fine.

Also if you breastfeed the baby will have your immunity so less likely the baby will catch it.

On first pregnancy I was around his hands nephews who had chicken pox when 24 weeks pregnant and midwife said I will be fine because I have had it.

During second pregnancy there was a chicken pox outbreak at my son's nursery and I was 38 weeks pregnant so I took him out of nursery then fearing my newborn would get it. Then health Visitor said newborn very unlikely to catch it anyway because I was breastfeeding so I sent my son back to nursery and luckily they both never got it.

You won't catch it again if you already had it. And wont pass it on unless you catch it.

I also had chicken pox immunity tested in booking in bloods. It's VSV immunity on your notes

If you've had it before you've nothing to worry about.

My son developed chicken pox 6 days before my elcs, oh how we laughed.
Even though I hadn't had cp, my blood sample was tested and I did have immunity. By the time we were going home with newborn all was clear, it did mean he couldn't visit me in hospital though, obviously!

I've had chicken pox twice, DD1 caught cp when I was in early pregnancy. They took a blood test, I was found to have no immunity so they gave me a vaccine. It has to be within 10 days of you being exposed iirc so let your gp know asap.

Both ds's had chickenpox when I was about 6 weeks pregnant this time - ds2 was covered head to foot in them. My midwife said as I'd already had them me & baby should be fine. For your own peace of mind give your midwife or gp a call

I contacted the hospital, and they are using a sample they still have (didn't realise they kept them) to test my immunity.

Glad I called as the window for the injection of need is short following exposure.

That's really good they are doing tests.. fingers crossed you are okay. Breast feed at the beginning just to be on the safe side because the colustrum is like a vaccination for the baby until they have their first immunisations at 8 weeks

You can only pass on the immunity you actually have. So if a woman has never has had chicken pox and has no immunity breastfeeding won't pass it on!
