Keeping clothes I haven't paid for??

calistaraines · 12/04/2017 19:33

Ordered a coat from an online retailer. Full price £150.
I paid for express delivery 1-2 days as I wanted it for a specific event.
It hadn't arrived the day before so I called the company and they said it hadn't been dispatched yet but they could upgrade to next day delivery so I would receive in time.
Next day two deliveries arrived each with a coat. I returned the extra coat and thought nothing more of it.
Have now realised that they have refunded my card the full amount so I essentially have a coat for free.
My mum thinks I should own up. What should I do???

Yeah, own up :) you'll feel bad otherwise. This did happen to me with some Boden tips and they just told me to keep them which was nice.

TitaniasCloset · 12/04/2017 19:35

I think you should own up.

KatieKaboom · 12/04/2017 20:05

You have to contact them and let them know.

Supermagicsmile · 12/04/2017 20:09

I wouldn't say anything, it was their error, not yours! Grin

SantanicoPandemonium · 12/04/2017 20:13

Just keep in mind that if you don't tell them, they might realise themselves and re-debit your card. And you can guarantee that it'll be a few days before pay day when you already had plans for the money.

ChocolateButton15 · 12/04/2017 20:13

I wouldn't say anything! Enjoy the coat!

TheUpsideDown · 12/04/2017 20:19

Yeah yeah we all know what the right moral ethical thing to do is...

But if it were me, I'd not say anything! Grin
Leave the tags on for a couple of weeks. If they notice their mistake you can let them have it back. If not, enjoy a lovely new coat!

waits to get a flaming

ilovelamp2 · 12/04/2017 20:23

I think I need a picture of the coat before I offer any wise words ... 😉

SaltySalt · 12/04/2017 20:25

I wouldn't say anything

ilovelamp2 · 12/04/2017 20:28

Abercrombie and Fitch sent me two lots of 3 kids'polo shirts when I ordered some for Christmas presents. I said nothing ..... I have lived with it just fine since (And my nephews look super smart!)

00100001 · 12/04/2017 20:28

I'd wait a few days to see if the charge comes through (maybe wait until after BH weekend) and then if the charge comes through it's no big deal.

if it doesn't come through, ring up and explain.

luckylucky24 · 12/04/2017 20:30

I would probably keep it but put the money aside for a few months in case they realise and take it back.

ThymeLord · 12/04/2017 20:30

It wouldn't even occur to me to own up in a situation like this. I must be a terrible person.

HermioneJeanGranger · 12/04/2017 20:31

You should contact them, but I'm sure loads of people will be along to tell you it's perfectly okay to steal £150 from a company just because they made a mistake Hmm

However, do bare in mind that they may well notice in a couple of days and take the money anyway, so don't bank on having the money to spend if you decide to steal risk it.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 12/04/2017 20:32

I would own up - it is the honest thing to do.

SerialReJoiner · 12/04/2017 20:32

Something similar happened to me with a cooking appliance, ended up with two. I contacted the company and they told me to keep it! I ended up passing it on to a friend who was very excited to receive it, so everything worked out.

SideOfFoot · 12/04/2017 20:39

I wouldn't go to the bother and expense of phone calls and time explaining what has happened for a mistake that was of their doing. I'd just be aware that they might still take a payment so keep money aside.

hollieberrie · 12/04/2017 20:41

I'd just keep it without a second thought Grin

thefairyfellersmasterstroke · 12/04/2017 20:42

I've done something similar, I'm not ashamed to say. Bought something as a Christmas gift, didn't open the packaging until about a fortnight later and discovered there was more than one in the box. By that time it was kinda too late...

Give it a couple of weeks, and see what happens. I guess you can always pretend you hadn't noticed they'd credited your card back. Smile

MeadowDream · 12/04/2017 20:43

I would never mention it!!
Maybe I'm a terrible person but I would forget it and enjoy the coat.
Best pair of shoes I ever got where sent in the bag with other stuff I ordered.
I never think twice about keeping extra stuff with Asda deliveries either. Though in fairness I don't complain if there's one or two items missing either so probably balances out!

Maybe I need to have a long hard look at my life Wink

FABpMummy · 12/04/2017 20:44

Depends on whether you're a thief or not.

FiveShelties · 12/04/2017 20:46

I would be the first to complain if a company charged me twice, so would have to tell them if they did not charge me at all.

Floggingmolly · 12/04/2017 20:49

They will very probably reverse the refund when it's spotted. Don't count your chickens Confused

category12 · 12/04/2017 21:01

Why do you need two coats? Just send it back.

tanyadm · 12/04/2017 21:10

Waitrose once accidentally gave me someone else's very expensive gin (£45 a bottle). I phoned and emailed and they told me just to enjoy it. I did. But felt better for having been honest. It was gooooooood gin 😂
