Keeping clothes I haven't paid for??

calistaraines · 12/04/2017 19:33

Ordered a coat from an online retailer. Full price £150.
I paid for express delivery 1-2 days as I wanted it for a specific event.
It hadn't arrived the day before so I called the company and they said it hadn't been dispatched yet but they could upgrade to next day delivery so I would receive in time.
Next day two deliveries arrived each with a coat. I returned the extra coat and thought nothing more of it.
Have now realised that they have refunded my card the full amount so I essentially have a coat for free.
My mum thinks I should own up. What should I do???

She only has one coat now- she sent the other back

ForTheSakeOfFuck · 12/04/2017 21:19

Category OP did send one back, and got a full refund, so she now has a free coat.

ForTheSakeOfFuck · 12/04/2017 21:24

I dunno. I've kept things that I've been given/sent by mistake before and I've ended up not enjoying them because my stupid loud unmutable conscience has a voice like Catherine Tate's Lauren Cooper (I have no idea why) and it just bleats on in my ears every damn day. "So you kept it eh? Are you bovvered? Are you bovvered though? You should be bovvered. It ain't even yours though. It ain't even yours is it. Are you disrespecting me? Are you stupid? Why don't you shut up though? Shut up, then. I don't care though, I ain't bovvered! Still ain't yours though." If I could get a neurosurgeon to tell me the precise location I need to jam a knitting needle into my brain to shut it up, I would probably have done so by now.

More to the point, it depends on if your Lauren Cooper can be easily silenced.

I would phone them up right away, it's just stealing otherwise,

If they had charged you twice for one coat, would you be hesitating?

You have a coat you haven't paid for, so do the right thing and phone the company and tell them

category12 · 12/04/2017 21:45

Oh yes, sorry, misread. OP, it's just stealing. Would you shoplift?

saltandvinegarcrisps1 · 12/04/2017 22:28

I ordered furniture in a shoo for my DD and they only charged me £41 instead of £410. We only noticed because I was checking credit card statement to see if a refund from something else had been put back on. Probably wouldn't have noticed as we were paying off a big holiday so had a lot on the card. DH said we had to go in and own up as they were a small business and not a big firm like ikea. So I did and paid in full. They gave me a £50 voucher which I was grateful for and thought - yes, we did the right thing. Went back later to spend it and they had closed down!!! So if a big firm, I would keep.

llangennith · 12/04/2017 22:31

Keep it

1Evaline1 · 12/04/2017 22:44

Call your bank and get your card blocked as lost and reissued so they can't re take the money if they make a mistake Confused . If you wanted to not confess.

Ps don't confess and enjoy

KidLorneRoll · 12/04/2017 22:57

Don't be a dick. Own up.

Cherrysoup · 12/04/2017 23:08

Own up, or its theft.

DirtyDancing · 12/04/2017 23:08

Ordered something from a small company and received two in error. Rang and told them straight away. The women was v grateful and said there aren't many honest people in life. Felt nice to be one of the good guys.. you'll feel better for it and your karma will too!

Lukeandlorelai4Ever · 12/04/2017 23:10

icebearforpresident · 13/04/2017 00:11

I wouldnt. Silar happenes to me,my phone was due an upgrade and i phoned EE and ordered a white handset. Got a call the next day saying white was out of stock, did i want to wait 2 weeks for the white one or get a black one the next day. Chose the black one amd that was that.

Next day 2 black phones arrived. Gave it a week and nothing happened so my husband got the extra.

Salmotrutta · 13/04/2017 00:37

I'd own up.
It's dishonest to do otherwise.
I'm always dismayed by the number of people on here who would blithely say nothing/do nothing when this happens.

LouKout · 13/04/2017 00:40

This happened to me once but I didn't notice the refund.

Until they came after me and very very grumpy

Seeingadistance · 13/04/2017 01:52

I'd tell them.

bluegreenyellow · 13/04/2017 02:02

so this thread basically exists in the hope you get people to tell you to keep it to clear your conscience however whatever way you look at it its theft

Theycalledmethewildrose · 13/04/2017 02:25

A similar thing recently happened to me but with a much cheaper item

FreeNiki · 13/04/2017 02:28

Free coat Grin

tabbymog · 13/04/2017 02:31

Amazon sent me two ghd hair driers by mistake. When I emailed them and said so, they told me to keep them both. This was about two years ago, the second one is still in its box.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 13/04/2017 02:33

I had a similar situation with Amazon - they sent out a reasonably large order via HDN who apparently couldn't find my work address (despite every other delivery driver being able to Hmm). After tracking it for days, calling HDN and getting varied responses, I got back to Amazon and said it hadn't arrived at all and HDN didn't know where it was, so they sent out a new package by Royal Mail (next day delivery). Of course, the day after, HDN finally managed to find the workplace address Hmm and delivered a VERY battered package, so I now had 2 of everything.
Phoned Amazon and they said they'd send someone to pick it up, which they did (oddly enough, NOT from HDN...)
Wouldn't have crossed my mind to keep it.

Call them.

Wells20 · 13/04/2017 02:34

I'd own up also. It is the sort of thing that would keep worrying me for years otherwise.

3luckystars · 13/04/2017 03:01

I would own up. Something similar happened me last year and everyone told me to keep the item 'it was my good luck' (it wasn't free, but massively reduced)
My dishonesty came back to haunt me! Before I ever even used it, my daughter poured make up on it, then I managed to get the stain out but clothes dye got on it from the washing machine. Then the baby sneezed while on antibiotics and squirted radioactive green diarrhoea across the room on top of it, then my other child lost a tooth and spat blood on it. Im just waiting for it to voluntarily burst into flames now, I have had no enjoyment from it and really regret my dishonesty now.

Itisnoteasybeingdifferent · 13/04/2017 03:29

Counting up so far 24 out of 49 people are saying return. There are also a number of neutral comments so not all of the rest are saying keep it.

That is quite high level of, for whant of a better word, dishonesty.
