To douche with tea tree oil before a smear test?!

Was talking with friends today. I have a smear soon. Just mentioned I was going to pick up some tea-tree oil on the way home. They asked what it was for so I told them I douche before these appointments.

I occasionally do it after sex too. In fact I try not to have sex in the few days leading up to an internal.

They were Shock.

Now I feel weird Blush To me, it's like giving my teeth an extra good brush, flossing, mouthwash before seeing dentist. Just preparing myself, you know?

A lot of women in the US seem to have this as part of their regular routine.

By the way, I've been doing this for a few years now and no gynae problems so far.

If you're going to flush out with anything, flush out with warm water. Nothing else needed.

TheyDoItOnPurposeLynne · 12/04/2017 18:06

Yikes!!
And before a smear???
Wouldn't it upset the pH balance etc????

Bluefrog26 · 12/04/2017 18:06

Kikikaakaa just out of interest how did you get rid of your BV and recurrent thrush? Sorry to hijack thread Grin

Kikikaakaa · 12/04/2017 18:06

I use a condom or I just have a shower.

If you don't like semen inside you, use a cap, condom or ask him to withdraw. Or just have a shower

This smell you report could be BV or thrush that isn't really being cured

SelfObsessionHoney · 12/04/2017 18:06

I just give myself a wipe on the external parts of my vulva with a bit of loo roll. If I can be bothered. Sometimes I'm too busy cuddling and falling asleep.

Hoppinggreen

Ouch, but your post did make me lol. Sorry!

MsStricty · 12/04/2017 18:07

For the record: I worked in women's sexual health, so I know something about this.

DipsyLaLa22 · 12/04/2017 18:07

I'm a GP. Please stop doing this, there is no need. As someone said earlier, the American system is heavily corrupted by financial interests and is filled with unnecessary treatments and investigations. The vagina has a delicately balanced mix of bacteria and pH level, douches interrupt this balance.

Fruitcocktail6 · 12/04/2017 18:08

How do flush out after sex?

I just got for a wee. If more comes down later I just clean it up, it's no big deal.

Seriously, I am still 😮 from reading this. Your poor vagina, stop thinking it's dirty, it's not.

Familyof3or4 · 12/04/2017 18:08

Pee after sex!

If you don't like the idea of stuff coming out best to have sex with a condom?

I think you shouldn't be washing an area that you have to insert an applicator in to wash it.

floraeasy · 12/04/2017 18:08

It's a bit like the "talc causes ovarian cancer"row. So many mixed reports.

I always schedule a smear for first thing in the morning so I'm freshly showered, but honestly don't think beyond that. (Tea tree oil reeks, I can't imagine what the nurse must think.)

hoddtastic · 12/04/2017 18:09

i dip my vag in domestos hun.

Shock
Kikikaakaa · 12/04/2017 18:09

I had antibiotics for the BV and use the BV gels from boots

For the thrush I Was given oral and internal pessaries for a week, every day to clear it by GP. Before then canesten once wasn't doing the job. I also abstained from sex till it was gone. Your partner needs to be treated too. Then wash with minimal soap, cotton pants only, avoid tights

floraeasy · 12/04/2017 18:09

Could I just use water? As a compromise?

MaidOfStars · 12/04/2017 18:09

I find it just hangs around and comes down later on after showering iyswim?
I use condoms now. But in the glory days of the Pill, most semen used to exit my vagina pretty quick.

The remaining trickles? Isn't that what knicker gussets are for? Confused

steff13 · 12/04/2017 18:09

We're told not to douche here in the US, too. Women who do it are definitely not the norm.

I'd be concerned it would affect the test results.

treaclesoda · 12/04/2017 18:10

hodd Grin

My Shock was at the OP

Ellisandra · 12/04/2017 18:10

It is utterly depressing that you can't accept your vagina as it is AngrySad

ZilphasHatpin · 12/04/2017 18:10

These women in the US, are they female women?

WombOfOnesOwn · 12/04/2017 18:11

I have a relative who conducts internal exams as part of her job. She says it breaks her heart a little how many women apologize for bleeding or for the smell of their vaginal area. Doctors have seen it all. They are the most matter of fact, least easily disgusted people in the world. There is less than zero need to do this.

ScarletForYa · 12/04/2017 18:12

It's antibacterial OP, so it's probably killing all three good bacteria in your vagina.

Bad idea, that'll allow bad bacteria to proliferate, the likes of bacterial vaginosis etc. So what you are doing is counter productive.

Once you wash after sex there shouldn't be any smell? If you're noticing an odour get checked for BV.

Nocabbageinmyeye · 12/04/2017 18:12

Doesn't everyone just blast up the shower to the hot and powerful setting and power hose their vag after sex ? Blush I love that feeling (in a non sexual way) Blush

I really have the urge to try tea tree now though, how about a few drops in the bath? Would that be similar but safer?

floraeasy · 12/04/2017 18:12

i dip my vag in domestic hun
