.. to have still cooked the lasagne?

Very proud of myself to have thrown together a huge lasagne from scratch while also working from home. Freshly cooked bechemel sauce, homecooked sauce .. I was putting on the final layer of pasta sheets ready for the oven and noticed 2 of those bloody tiny wheat mites crawling on them!!!

So there was already a layer of pasta sheets (from the same box) in the middle of the lasagne -and it would have been ruined if I had to have dug them out-

So ..... what would you have done?

I know this is so gross.

I would have binned it. I would have been gutted to do so, but I couldn't eat it now.

Flicked the mites off and cooked it. What are wheat mites anyway?

The cooking process would completely disintegrate any other mites that may have been on the lower pasta sheets.

You're cooking it at 180-200 for at least 30-45 mins I assume - that'll kill the mites. What I don't know is whether they leave toxins behind which may not be destroyed in the cooking process.

That said I'd probably have cooked it & crossed my fingers Smile

I want to be pragmatic and say "Did you wash the mites off? Then it's fine. Don't sweat it."

But in my head I am thinking "That's minging. I am never ever ever coming to your house for tea and cake, not ever."

I vannot remeber where i read this, and it is very likely to be complete bollocks, but i read that up to 10% of dried pasta is made up of small insects like you describe as the way the wheat is stored means it gets infested fairly regularly.

It won't do you any harm! Whether or not you actually want to eat it now is entirely your call, but there's no need to worry about it making you ill or anything.

There are actual guidelines out there detailing the 'acceptable' levels of insect remnants (and other nasty things) that can be found in flour etc, it doesn't make for pleasant reading but the point is we probably all eat the odd mite every now and again and remain in blissful ignorance!

I definitely wouldn't be worried about it making me sick. It's just a bit gross. Good point though frieda.

The top layer of sheets was from a brand new insect free box.

I had to do some cutting of the first layer of sheets to fit in the tin, so I probably would have noticed if there loads of them, possibly one or two made it in. And it's a big lasagne.

I'd absolutely cook at eat it. You're eating dead cow parts in a lasagne anyway (I'm a meat eater, I'm just sayin') so it's a bit late to start getting squicked out about a couple of miniscule wee mites.
