Grand National

FairytalesAreBullshit · 08/04/2017 14:19

Was wondering how many bets are reasonable for Grand National, also if any understood the language, sorry for being a PITA Flowers

Some places are offering to pay up for positions 1-5 so I'm guessing if your horse is in the first 5 you get something. Will it be at the stake advertised for winning? Is this what each way is?

What's your favourite for the GN?

Total newbie, my sister got a voucher for inviting friends. So DH is going to give it a go, with 4 of us putting £2.50 on a horse.

Good luck to everyone else Star

The Grand National is barbaric. Those poor horses.

Womble75 · 08/04/2017 16:06

PNGirl flat racing where they race "babies" who aren't fully mature and whose backs and legs are knackered by a young age? Hmm

StillDrivingMeBonkers · 08/04/2017 16:07

There are close to 10,000 racing meets per annum in the UK, so that's 170,000 since Y2K. 47 horse died?

1700 people a year dies in road traffic accidents, which is down from the 3,500 odd in Y2k . We havent banned cars.

Everything in moderation.

Caken · 08/04/2017 16:10

'Everything in moderation', yes, just killing a few horses here and there in the name of gambling/sport is totally ok as it's in moderation 🙄

Cruel and unnecessary.

Graphista · 08/04/2017 16:12

Wishing you guys wouldn't bet thereby supporting those making money out of suffering. Needs banned and I don't just mean the national.

Teatowelfairy · 08/04/2017 16:15

The grand national fences where altered to make them safer for the horses in 2013. Incidentally a horse hasn't lost it's life in the grand national since 2012.

BadLad · 08/04/2017 16:17

Much as I enjoy the Grand National, didn't Synchronized have to be euthanized after falling since then? Or am I misremembering?

youarenotkiddingme · 08/04/2017 16:17

I bet £10 in total over 6 horses!

Some EA and some to win.

I choose by horses I've seen perform well, names mentioned the most and ones like the name of.

myoriginal3 · 08/04/2017 16:18

There are horsey people responsible here. Owners, jockeys, trainers.

Bring your concerns up with the wider horsey community.

Teatowelfairy · 08/04/2017 16:21

BadLad synchronized was in 2012.

hhorvath · 08/04/2017 16:21

Horse racing is animal abuse. Over 1000 horses have died in UK racing in the past 10 years. They don't consent to racing, have to be whipped to get them round the track and are murdered when they injure themselves, then shipped over to France for their meat to be sold.

If you have a conscience you should not bet.

StillDrivingMeBonkers · 08/04/2017 16:22

Some facts and figures before MN bans everything and consigns the thick end of 150,000 people (people who work directly in, partners, children, other dependents) all to the dole queue and homeless hostels.

The total economic impact of British Racing in 2012 was £3.45bn with a tax contribution of £276m.

There are an average of 13,716 horses in training with 8,215 owners.
Direct, indirect and associated employment in 2012 was 85,200.

Racing is the second best attended sport in Britain after football, and in 2012 accounted for four of the ten highest attended sporting events (excluding the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games).

Lets all have a touch of reality.

BadLad · 08/04/2017 16:22

Thanks. I was too lazy to look it up myself.

I've placed an each way on the Old Lion as well.

fatmummy87 · 08/04/2017 16:25

I hate the grand national, poor horses Sad

hhorvath · 08/04/2017 16:26

I don't give a shit about the amount of tax raised from the exploitation and murder of animals.

Caken · 08/04/2017 16:27

Don't really give 2 hoots about the economic wonder of it all. Have that reality 😎

Caken · 08/04/2017 16:27

High 5 hhorvath!

Gabilan · 08/04/2017 16:29

I am a horse owner, rider and lover I am aware injuries can happen in the field and leisure riding, but pushing horses to ever extreme lengths when it all comes down to money making isn't right. 47 have died at the grand national festival since 2000. People who bet have blood on their hands

Likewise. I'm not watching it.

There are close to 10,000 racing meets per annum in the UK, so that's 170,000 since Y2K. 47 horse died?

No. 47 at that particular meet, not 47 across all meets. According to this site it's 1500 in 10 years. However, those are the ones they can find out about.

What we don't hear about is the ones that just about make it home and are shot there. And that's before we start on what for me is the really horrific bit and that's the wastage of horses that don't make the grade. I'm frequently offered horses for "hook" money i.e. their price per pound of flesh and it's a few hundred quid. This is for horses who a year or two previously were going for five and six figure sums. Racing is an industry. And it stinks.

Don't watch it!!!! Actually from many racing haters here it is obvious you don't have any knowledge of racing yards and the life of the racehorse. What do you suggest set them all free. Fluffy bunny land!!!!!

myoriginal3 · 08/04/2017 16:35

I bet you are all snuggling up to McCoy and Mullins at the Hunt Ball.

CornflakeHomunculus · 08/04/2017 16:36

The grand national fences where altered to make them safer for the horses in 2013. Incidentally a horse hasn't lost it's life in the grand national since 2012.

The GN isn't the only race that uses those fences though.

Last year two horses in the Fox Hunter's Chase (Clonbanan Lad and Marasonnien) and another two in the Topham Chase (Gullinbursti and Minella Reception) sustained fatal injuries. Both those races are run over the GN fences.

In 2013 Battlefront collapsed and died during the Fox Hunter's Chase.

hhorvath · 08/04/2017 16:37

You can't discuss the Grand National without acknowledging the abuse. Sorry that reality makes it hard for you to gamble, I'll play you a song on the world's smallest violin.

Caken · 08/04/2017 16:39

And I bet you're selective about the animal abuse you support - I bet (as this is a thread about betting after all, let's stay relevant!) you get up in arms about cruelty to cats and dogs, whales, dolphins, lions being shot by American dentists etc etc but can turn a blind eye to abuse that you find acceptable.

myoriginal3 · 08/04/2017 16:45

God bless us all.
