Tertiary level. I'm an adult. She's teaching me.

I am never the only one talking, but I am the one she singles out to reprimand, every single time. No, I shouldn't be talking when she's asking us for her attention, I'll own that, but as I said, I'm hardly the only one. Yet it's always me she singles out, never any of the other offenders. It's always me she scolds - in front of everyone else in the class. I've never seen or heard her reprimand anyone else.

Am I being unreasonable to think she's horrible?

Perhaps you have a carrying voice which she hears over the others.

Or perhaps other people talk less than you think. Or perhaps another student has complained about you.

However if you are giving a presentation or some training I know from personal experience it is deeply irritating to have other people talking.

There is a really easy way to solve this as you know.

Apart from being incredibly rude, as an adult student you are presumably paying for this course, so you are wasting your own time and money as well as everyone else's.

Underbeneathsies · 28/03/2017 01:00

Ask for a meting with her and her supervisor. Ask the supervisor first.
Bring notes on when you're reprimanded, and lay it out that you think she's bullying you.

Talk with her supervisor alone if you need to if a meeting with her seems too frightening.

Bullying is rotten and endemic in education as everywhere. You don't have to put up with it. Hope you're ok.

StrawberryJelly00 · 28/03/2017 01:02

I agree with Scarlett - this post sounds very childish.

faithinthesound · 28/03/2017 01:02

I mean I acknowledge and own that I'm talking when she's trying to get our attention - I shouldn't be, and I know that. I'm not complaining about being reprimanded for it. I'm complaining about ALWAYS being the ONLY one reprimanded for it.

Maybe you are the ringleader.

She shuts you up everyone else might be quiet.

Crispbutty · 28/03/2017 01:06

How about you learn not to be so rude then she would have no reason to single you out at all. Confused

keeplooking · 28/03/2017 01:09

Yes, I do think YABU. If you're an adult, maybe try behaving like one, then there won't be any need for her to reprimand you!

TheSockGoblin · 28/03/2017 01:09

Wtf? Why are you bothering to go to an adult class if you won't keep your mouth shut and actually concentrate on what's being taught?

I'd be bloody pissed off if I was in your class and trying to focus while others were talking and then have to put up with people being told off.

You're not 14 anymore. Other people are there because they want to learn.

So shut your mouth, listen and learn..or don't bother going until you're mature enough to respect everyone else in the class.

(YABU by the way)

ScarlettFreestone · 28/03/2017 01:12

I'm sorry to be harsh Faith but your post is basically saying

It's not faaaaiiiirrrr!!!!

It's not bullying if you are actually talking.

It's not fair for the other pupils if you are involved in continually disrupting the class either.

As an experiment keep your mouth firmly shut next lesson and see how that works out.

WhereDoesThisRoadGo · 28/03/2017 01:14

What a contradiction in terms... I am an adult, yet I get told off for talking. Perhaps show some respect and shut your mouth or leave the class. As an adult student myself, I assure you it is not that difficult.

Grow up. YABVU.

Jeez, the fact you would even put this in AIBU says there is no hope for you.

Jemimapiddleduck · 28/03/2017 01:14

Just shut up.

I don't care who is talking but everyone just needs to stop when the teacher is. It's really fucking frustrating for those of us who are trying to listen and who have limited time to study etc.

I can't believe you are so daft as to not realise that all you have to do to stop her singling you out is tooo...(I'll repeat it).... shut up.

You probably have either an annoying voice
or are seen as the ring leader.

Don't worry about what happens to the other offenders it's not your business. You are only accountable for yourself.

CaseyAtTheBat · 28/03/2017 01:15

You could just stop talking in class. Problem solved.

PerspicaciaTick · 28/03/2017 01:18

Stop talking in class.

Don't bother owning it. Don't bother putting your hands up to being wrong. Just shut the fuck up.

keeplooking · 28/03/2017 01:18
Grin
VimFuego101 · 28/03/2017 01:21

You say you know you shouldn't be talking... so why do you continue to do it? Are you trying to clarify something or help someone?

Foureyesarebetterthantwo · 28/03/2017 01:23

Stop talking! It really is that simple.

I don't lecture when students are talking, I just stop and wait.

I would be very annoyed if it happened repeatedly.

The fact she singles it out means you probably do it the most/are the most obvious- so stop!

If someone came with a bullying complaint to me and it was revealed they felt picked on for being asked to stop talking in an adult education class, whatever happened to the other students, I'd laugh, it isn't bullying as if you didn't do the wrong thing, it wouldn't happen!

PerspicaciaTick · 28/03/2017 01:29

It sounds like Groundhog Day.

OP goes to class. OP talks. OP is asked to stop. OP feels sad.
Next time OP goes to class. OP talks. OP is asked to stop. OP feels sad.
Next time OP goes to class. OP talks. OP is asked to stop. OP feels sad.

It takes someone spectacularly dim to look at the above and conclude that "My teacher is the problem".

JonesyAndTheSalad · 28/03/2017 01:38

Confused just don't talk! You're a bloody adult! Have some manners and listen!

JonesyAndTheSalad · 28/03/2017 01:40

And complaining about being the "only one" reprimanded is really by the by.

If you're rude enough to talk over someone who is teaching you then you can't get on your high horse about who she focuses her frustration on.

notangelinajolie · 28/03/2017 01:51

You sound like a 15 year old. You are also acting like a 15 year old. If you really want to learn something maybe you should start behaving like an adult and shut up and let the teacher do her jib.

Tartyflette · 28/03/2017 01:52

I'm gobsmacked that adults, who presumably have voluntarily chosen and paid for an educational course of some kind, talk in class over the teacher who is trying do do his or her job and teach you!
Are you there to learn or not?

notangelinajolie · 28/03/2017 01:53

*job even

kali110 · 28/03/2017 01:57

Maybe your voice is the loudest? Most annoying?
Just stop talking!
Maybe other students have actually complained about you? ( i would)
And have. Last ever course i did. They had a really loud voice.
They spoke All the way through the lesson.
Every.single. Lesson.
Angry

Choccywoccyhooha · 28/03/2017 02:00

Ha ha! This reminds me of many if the teenagers I have taught.
"Johnny, you need to stop talking and listen please. "
"Is it only me though, Miss, is it only me though?"

Frustrating with 13 year olds, beyond rude with adults.

faithinthesound · 28/03/2017 02:36

Okay, I am being unreasonable. I guess I couldn't see it from the inside - but enough people have commented telling me I'm wrong (and childish) that I need to take notice!

I'll do what a PP said - try shutting up.
