AIBU to loathe the word 'awesome'?

Really just cannot stand it! And the way it's used for just about everything and by everyone.

One of the worst examples I've seen was some advice given about how to end a relationship by text: " So sorry it did not work out between us. Thanks for the good times and keep on being awesome".

Aaaargh! Vomit.

Personally I don't like the use of the word as a sort of clubby, "i'm fabulous" appendage - think "Awesomestow" as an example.

You're right, it's overuse has made it meaningless.

I remember Ben Elton saying about this years ago - very funny routine about the "Awesome bottle of coke", using the word in the correct context

I absolutely loathe the word "awesome". Horrible.

Every so often I say something is "awe-inspiring"; it's a little in-joke I have with my kids, who have also been trained to hate "awesome".

As an American, "awesome" is one of the terrible things for which I am willing to accept responsibility. I really don't think you British would have come up with it on your own. Sorry !

Agree there are other horrors out there, but this word still tops my most-abhorred list.

I feel the same about "Amazing" - used everywhere for the most mundane of things.

Me: I'll have the mixed platter for the starter
Waiter: Awesome!
Me: Then the lasagne for the main course

Me: And a side of mixed veg
Waiter: Awesome!

Awesome should be reserved for American teens only. So should 'dude'. Only they can get away with those words.

Totally agree with lo (little one) and uncomfy. Both vomit inducing.

Gosh, I use it all the time.

I love it! I use it loads. There's no word with the same connotations - 'brilliant', 'fantastic' etc sound a bit Enid Blyton.

In Glasgow we use 'smashing' in a similar way sometimes

Not as bad as 'epic'!! Honestly spend with enough time with preteens and you too will be cringing every time you hear the word!!!

And to me is sounds best in an Australian accent, I was living in Melbourne when I first heard it, about 20 years ago.

Never mind LO (Little One), 'bubba' or 'bubs' sets my teeth on edge.

'Aww (or, more often 'orrrrr') how is ur bubba hun?'

Actually I never liked the word 'baby' as a term of endearment for grown-ups.

But the new 'bae' is even worse!

There was a piece in The Guardian about how Brits tend to use 'Marvelous' and 'Awesome' sarcastically. Personally I only hear 'Awesome' on American TV shows, so it grates less because I hear it so infrequently.

My favourite was hearing a witness being sworn into court, he answered "Awesome"

I absolutely hate it. I used to live with a couple who used it about everything and by the end of the tenancy I had an almost Pavlovian twitch.

I don't mind awesome, although it is over used, but hate 'super', as in 'super cool', 'super cute', etc

LO is ok, but can't stand 'little people' instead of children.
