AIBU to loathe the word 'awesome'?

Really just cannot stand it! And the way it's used for just about everything and by everyone.

One of the worst examples I've seen was some advice given about how to end a relationship by text: " So sorry it did not work out between us. Thanks for the good times and keep on being awesome".

Aaaargh! Vomit.

Cheers for the ear worm pants Angry

KC225 · 21/03/2017 10:15

Hate the awesome exclamation.

But especially hate the over/misuse of the word random. Now I am prepared to accept that the young (up to 20) have their own sayings/language use but there no reason for a grown adult to utter 'random' if something appears to be a tad out of the ordinary.

mycatisginger · 21/03/2017 10:18

I hate 'awesome' it's not 'awesome' to say it. It really gets on my nerves.

I also hate 'LOL'

And 'My Lovelie'

mycatisginger · 21/03/2017 10:19

WTF is 'Cray cray' anyway???

Herschellmum · 21/03/2017 10:21

Oh seriously? It's like everyone is offended by anything these days.

Is use awesome quite a lot, but it's not like it's the only word I use. It is a bit lego movie but even so I love it. It's obviously not the only word I use, and I certainly wouldn't use it to break up with someone, although it's surely more crass that it was done over text than the use of words?

Notso · 21/03/2017 10:36

I have a FB friend who uses awesome for everything, and more than once in a post. 'Awesome day out with friends and the kiddies. Long walk with awesome views followed by an awesome picnic provided by the awesome Anna, awesome memories made. #awesomeday #makingmemories #awesomefriends #awesomepicnic #awesomecountryside #lovemyawesomekids

Notso · 21/03/2017 10:38

It doesn't offend me Herschellmum it's just a bit annoying when used so very frequently.

gillybeanz · 21/03/2017 10:42

Awesome is the buzz word used at my dd school by the head.
he is pretty 'awesome' himself tbh, the kids love him and he's great at his job.
All the kids have adopted his 'awesome' so it can stay for me, plenty worse words, and at least it has positive connotations.

Try living in this house where 'awesome' is pronounced with an American accent and therefore we regularly have exclamations of "arse-ome". Angry

FairytalesAreBullshit · 21/03/2017 10:56

It's a bit like the word moist that make some people recoil in horror. I can't think of anything I really loathe. I do say awesome, can't really see a problem with it, but I do understand some words just set people on edge.

ceeveebee · 21/03/2017 10:59

Embarrassingly, the company I work for uses Awesome on all our HR and recruiting stuff. I just searched our intranet and got over 100+ hits. Some cringeworthy examples

  • how to build awesome teams
  • what training do you need to become awesome in your role
NikkiP53 · 21/03/2017 11:04

@ShotsFired lol yep hate them too!

Now I have the "Everything is awesome!" Song from lego movie in my head! Grin

Lauraphine1000 · 21/03/2017 11:15

The next words after awesome on the table of words that make me shudder are:

buddy (and bud);
panties;
moist.

I think Jamie Oliver's new baby's name - Buddy Bear - is repellent!

Oddly enough I have no aversion to 'gusset'.

NataliaOsipova · 21/03/2017 11:19

Agree with Navy - some things are awesome, in the sense that they inspire a feeling of awe. So, for example, the Grand Canyon is awesome....but the fact that my daughter has finished her dinner is not!

SaltySalt · 21/03/2017 11:23

Gusset Grin

normanreedusWILLbemyhusband · 21/03/2017 11:25

Yes! And dd says it all the time Angry

elQuintoConyo · 21/03/2017 11:26

5yo DS spent some time around my American friend's twin 12yo boys and now EVERYTHING is 'arse-um' Grin

It is very cute.

Otherwise I don't hear it often. DH and I sometimes say 'good job!' over something inane like he set the table or i made a salad. But then we'll throw out foreign swearwords and crap we have made up. Keeps the relationship fresh Grin

kierenthecommunity · 21/03/2017 11:28

Buddy Bear is old news for JO. Isn't the latest kid called Rocket or some such nonsense?

SaltySalt · 21/03/2017 11:30

River kieren

Lauraphine1000 · 21/03/2017 11:38

I can't stand all of JO's offspring names Grin They're so twee and sound like the title of childrens' stories - ie, just infantile. Not so great for when they're grown up.

Your are being unreasonable ... awesome is an... awesome word 😂

BeachyKeen · 21/03/2017 12:43

Op you better not come to Canada! We use buddy all the time! It refers to the other person in the story.
Guy 1 "Buddy there, pulls outta nowhere, cuts me off and slams on the binders!"
Guy2 "Greasy! Didja deck him?"
Guy1 "Nah! He waved sorry. But fuck! Nearly took a heart attack!"
