Somehow managed to never see the cartoon version of Beauty and the Best. Watching it with my daughter now. So the Beast kidnapped Bele's dad, coerced her into staying with him, shouts, smashes furniture and is basically a prick. If Belle was posting in Relationships I'd be telling her to LTB

It actually sends a really dangerous message to young girls that the love of a good woman can "fix" an abusive man

It's a horrible premise for a film.

I have always suspected that Belle is suffering from the Stockholm Syndrome.

I loved this film for years, watched it again as an adult and felt the same! i haven't seen the new one yet and I wonder if it has been changed?

I hated the Twilight books/films for the same reasons. Controlling and abusive partner that the other one does everything they can to appease.

Being an adult has ruined a lot of Disney films for me. The Little Mermaid - where a teenager who's just turned 16 has her curiosity and eagerness to learn crushed by her father, so much that she fantasises about abandoning her home and people. She then sees a guy for a few minutes, becomes convinced that she's in love, then gives up her voice for him with the encouragement of a witch who tells her that men prefer women who are sexually attractive and don't give a shit about what women have to say.

Also, Twilight is seriously creepy - elderly man in the body of a teen who goes to high school to hang around with teenagers.

Another one for the Chase!

In the new one Belle's dad is imprisoned for theft (a rose in the beasts garden) and Belle takes her fathers place after tricking her father by pushing him out the prison cell and closing the door.

In the original I think it was for trespassing. I always just took it as it was a different time and place. it never occurred to me to think of the dark undertones till now.

The character of Belle in the new film is a lot more confident and strong willed than the previous version. I enjoyed the new film.

Father has PTSD after seeing his wife and children killed during a home invasion. He is left with his son who is physically disabled who he smothers and doesn't believe in. Son rebels and father has to find him when he's kidnapped with the help of a female with a brain disorder.

Has the new one been modernised or is it the same as the cartoon? I too thought The Chase USA. Brooke definitely fancies The Beast. Her eyes sparkle when she speaks to him.
