AIBU?

To think the Beast is actually an abusive prick?

Somehow managed to never see the cartoon version of Beauty and the Best. Watching it with my daughter now. So the Beast kidnapped Bele's dad, coerced her into staying with him, shouts, smashes furniture and is basically a prick. If Belle was posting in Relationships I'd be telling her to LTB

ImwithMama, spot on! It's a bloody kids film where everything works out in the end, dear god please don't start pulling them all apart, I couldn't cope if you started on the Lion King...

I don't like any of them - recently had to sit through an assembly where we were told all about how the various Disney princesses were feminist heroes. I nearly exploded.
I have to tell myself to chill out - I know I over analyse them.

It really doesn't take that much analysing to see that, surely?! Confused

The snow white and little mermaid videos are funny, too.

Totally agree OP. Really doesn't take much analysing. Really surprises me that people are touting this as a feminist film (I think largely because the heroine likes books).

Totally agree, OP, it's why I've always hated it. (Don't think I'm overthinking it, though I suspect some posters may be under-thinking it).

A disfigured boy is kept by the man who killed his mother. This man abuses him and keeps him locked up and out of the public eye. His only friends are stones. The abusive man tries killing the only woman who wanted to help the boy because she was a gypsy. Abusive man burns down the village.

A little girl who is mentally and sometimes physically abused by her parents and brother ends up with mind controlling powers and uses them to get revenge on those who wronged her.

Ofc he's abusive. And it's standard Stockholm syndrome...and love him till you fix him shit.
Just like most other Disney films involve some kind of abuse(rape, necrophilia) etc especially if you look into the stories they are based on. Even if you ignore it it's all about...be pretty,be nice,be polite,be kind and sacrifice everything for love/a prince. My biggest pet peeve is Little mermaid. I still watch them though, and let dd watch them as well and talk about the "lessons" after.
Which should never be put up with a dick, because deep down he's a prince.

Huh.

I've never watched Belle and the Beast, or read it.

I do like Frozen and the movie with the redheaded, archer princess and the whole Bear transformation....?

But that sounds awful awful.

What I've often realised is this:

I wasn't allowed to watch a lot of TV and we didn't have any Disney films.
When I compared my ideas of marriage and romance when we were younger to my classmates I realised that we had extremely different expectations.

I'm not saying it's all or even just primarily because of Disney movies... But maybe a tiny little bit, Idk.

What always got me about the Disney animated B&B was that the fairy type person decided to turn the prince into the Beast when he was aged about 11! Waaaayyy harsh for a stroppy child!

It's a child's book/film why over think it

It was my absolute favourite as a young girl, and still is

ffs! my dds loved this video (yes, that's how old we are) when they were young and are taking me and my 82 year old mother to see it on Mothers' day. We always saw Belle as a feisty woman, perfectly able to stand up for herself against that misogynist Gaston. My daughters watched it endlessly and have grown up to be strong independent women who take no shit from anyone. They loved Aladdin too and understand that carpets don't really talk and fly! who knew?

It's not 'over analysing'. It's laid out right in front of you. It's the plot. It's a story who's origins lie in quelling the fears of girls married off to much older men by their fathers. The whole point of the story is to tell girls that looks don't matter, obedience is a virtue and their wishes count for precisely nothing.

Precisely a kids movie! Where little girls are told for the first time that being abused "turns out ok" i think a pp said if you just love him enough. Coupled with social expectations, "he teases/hits/pulls your hair because he likes you" etc in school and this stuff adds up.
