To not know what a glory hole is at age 40???

justcurious40 · 09/03/2017 22:39

My DH brought this clip to my attention earlier:

(about 3 minutes in)

And was shocked that, at 40 years old, I had no idea what a "glory hole" is. I thought he was BU, but everyone else in the programme had hysterics and all knew what it was, so am I just stupidly naive/ignorant?

Does nobody watch porn?

Not very often and then only the ethical, less male-gazey stuff which is quite hard to find. That tends not to feature gloryholes, funnily enough. Otherwise no. I don't get off from watching the results of trafficking, exploitation and the commoditisation of the human body.

graciestocksfield · 10/03/2017 02:44

Hear hear! I don't see watching porn as normal and still associate it with the "dirty mac brigade". Nothing I have seen of porn has disabused me of this notion.

I like doing sex, but don't want to watch others. Why would I? Does nothing for me. In fact it puts me off.

SparklyUnicornPoo · 10/03/2017 03:05

Did they not have the equivalent in Roman Baths? Probably, Romans nicked a lot of ideas off the Greeks.

mathanxiety · 10/03/2017 03:06

Cartright
I agree with your thoughts on 'glory hole' /the language of the subculture. I have the feeling that both meanings co-existed from the time cupboards under the stairs existed.

90sMum, agree wrt porn.

mathanxiety · 10/03/2017 03:06

80s not 90s Blush

Graphista · 10/03/2017 03:13

Not RTFT but only last week there was a reference to Glory Holes on TV, was a comdey show so might have been Mock the Week or something. I said to DH "What is a glory hole?" I am 43.

I had heard the phrase so often and I knew it was something sexual but I honestly didnt know. I remember thinking that it might vaguely be something related to anal sex but I didnt know, and so he told me about the hole the loo walls thing.

Funny though because I watched a film a few years ago, with Marianne Faithfull playing a woman who wanked off men through a hole in a brothel wall to make money for her grandsons medical treatment, and still didnt clock what a glory hole was! Good film btw, just googled and it was Irina Palm well worth a watch.

PyongyangKipperbang · 10/03/2017 03:25

I should add that there is no explicit content in the film!

Littlelegs19 · 10/03/2017 04:23

I only found out what this mean a few weeks ago after it was mentioned on something we was watching. When I asked DH what it meant he laughed at me! Must admit I had no idea (30years)

mellongoose · 10/03/2017 05:02

I'm still confused. Which side of the glory hole do you stand on if you're exposing your genitals? Inside the cubicle? Do you just wait there until someone likeminded pops by? Or do you find a glory hole and pop your todger through to whoever is inside? I'm very naive Hmmbut old enough not to worry!

pillowcase6 · 10/03/2017 05:30

I too would be interested to know about the practicalities of using a glory hole.

I know the term, and a lot of other naff sexual slang but I cannot stand porn, and never watch it. Watching humans copulate is vile to me. I'd rather do it myself, or read about it. Give me some good erotica any day!

sashh · 10/03/2017 05:35

GlitterGlue

Me too, no idea where I learned it.

Athrawes · 10/03/2017 05:48

A fluffier is a person who cleans the tunnels for the London Underground. Honest!

UsedToBeAPaxmanFan · 10/03/2017 05:58

Slightly off tangent, bit I learned about FGM when I was about 13 by reading "Lace" .

I knew what a glory hole was but to me it's always a messy cupboard under the stairs.

DevilsDumplings · 10/03/2017 06:36

Well I never Shock GLORY HOLES! Thank you mumnetters for enlightening a mid 50's granny Grin

megletthesecond · 10/03/2017 06:43

I didn't know glory hole could refer to a cupboard. I only knew it in a public toilets way, I'm 42.

IIRC the cemetery toilets are the ones for shenanigans in our town.

megletthesecond · 10/03/2017 06:44

I've never watched porn either.

bananafish81 · 10/03/2017 06:48

I'd never heard of glory hole meaning a cupboard. I only knew of its meaning in the toilet cubicle sense. This thread has been an education!

treaclesoda · 10/03/2017 06:52

It always scares me how in these discussions I know all the seedy stuff. I don't even know how I know! A curious mind maybe?

skerrywind · 10/03/2017 06:53

We had a cupboard under the stairs which was called the glory hole or the cubbyhole.

I come from a mining family, my grandfather was born in 1880 and used the term glory hole too- I believe it was a mining term for an underground cave.

If you're interested in the practicalities of it, then the most relevant reference I know which isn't pornographic or behind an academic paywall (or both!) is the stradivarius website, which contains first hand accounts by gay men of sex and sexuality throughout the 20th century. The section 'our pink history' and in particular on 'the cottages of merrie england', has lots of accounts' of why men used public toilets for sex, what the etiquette was, and how difficult it was to meet other gay men if you weren't already part of the subculture.

Accounts contain explicit sexual references, but nothing more graphic than the average day on mumsnet.

At a slight tangent, I suspect more men have heard of gloryholes, in the sexual sense, than women because more men have seen them in public loos even if they haven't used them. I don't think I've ever seen anything of that ilk in women's toilet cubicles but from what I gather they're still not uncommon in mens (although perhaps seen as a little retro since the arrival of the internet, and numerous other ways to meet strangers for sex.)

SeaWitchly · 10/03/2017 07:30

I am 43 and had to google it Blush
I do know what a fluffer is though!

TheNaze73 · 10/03/2017 07:31

Graphista Teabagging....Grin

When I play Call Of Duty & have wounded or killed someone, it's so hard not to squat & teabag them after!

SoupDragon · 10/03/2017 07:32

I know what a glory hole is - but I was brought up in Scotland. We all had one.

I'm not sure you do know.

mylittlephoney - I don't think your husband knows what a glory hole is if you are "shocked, disgusted etc etc".

On the off chance you're being serious, you might want to google it. Or read the thread.
