To be so pissed off with this doctor

have had really heavy periods for years now.they have tried the pill and loads of different tablets on me. non worked and I don't want the coil. They gave me a scan just before Christmas got told I had a polip. I then went for another test today it's been re arranged 3 times. The doctor told me they would remove the polip although it wasn't making my periods heavy. He then said he would try me on the pill.told him I had tried that then listed everything else I had tried and tried to tell him the reason I was referred to him was because nothing else had worked. We settled on trying the injection and he then inspected me. On leaving he gave me a leaflet for the surgery and about the coil which I don't want ahhh

Well what do you want if not the suggestions the dr proposes?

Have you tried both types of pill? The mini pill did nothing for me but the combined one was a miracle worker.

Tried both pills doctors have tried everything sent me for a scan as they thought it was maybe more than they thought I just assumed a doctor would read my notes and not recommended everything I've tried previously

I get where you're coming from, I have refused semi permanent contraception (implant, coil etc) but I'm happy on the mini pill as I don't bleed at all. But if your periods are that bad wouldn't you try it?

The mirena coil has been fantastic for me. I have gone from having to stay near a toilet for four days a month to hardly any bleeding. Also much less PMT. doesn't work for everyone I know

The GP must have left their magic wand at home. Sometimes there is only one option left and it sounds like it's a mirena or much more invasive surgical options.

You haven't mentioned children or your age but you could ask for laser ablation - its not reversible though. It was the right choice for me and it has transformed my life!

Sadly OP because drs are male a lot view women complaining about periods as making a fuss about nothing. I've dealt with various drs and only ever found one (not from uk) who was really appalled at women suffering heavy periods and not getting proper treatment. Other than that - I've been cajoled into the injection (constant albeit light bleeding every day for 6 months. Basically told it would stop and I was making a fuss over nothing!). Pill made me gain weight and had no effect on periods.

I've been offered a coil but my DP has injured himself on 2 previous partners coils, so he really doesn't want to go there again. Plus from what I've read it can make periods worse. I've given up trying to get anything resolved as I'm now in my 40s, and am just looking forward to menopause!

The Mirena coil worked like magic, instantly, for me. Nearing the end of my second one. Why are you so against the idea when it is what is recommended? Presumably you went to the expert for their expert opinion?

Mirena coil stopped my periods,,, went from bleeding like a stuck pig for 2 weeks plus a month to nothing at all.. had it changed after 4 years and taken out after another 4 years,, no bleeding since then,,,

I haven't had a period for 10 years. How can a coil make them worse?

This has nothing to do with male and female doctors. Presumably the dr op talks about is her gynae consultant whose primary area of interest is women's reproductive systems and problems thereof.

I totally disagree complaining the male Dr I saw exclaimed that he had no idea how and why women put up with the severity and inconvenience of terribly heavy periods for such a long time before seeking help. He said 'most men would be booking themselves in to see a Dr within a week of experiencing it themselves'

Coils don't work for everyone.

When I had the depo injection i was assured I wouldn't bleed. When I did I was told I wouldn't after the 2nd, or 3rd...surprise, I bled every fucking day, it was disgusting.

I for one wouldn't risk going through that crap again with a coil. Especially as in my area, because there's such a long waiting list if you had a coil put in and it didn't help, you could be waiting 6-8 weeks to have it taken out . Not a cheery prospect.

I'm on my 3rd coil with no problems, honesty having I fitted is no worse than moderate period pain.
But I totally get why you are frustrated that the doctor hasn't listened to you. Same thing has happened to me in my medication reviews.Angry

Sounds like a nightmare OP. like you are going round in circles... and that he change his mind in the middle of the consultation (from taking it out) to fitting a coil! crazy!

I've seen perhaps 10 drs over the years, maybe more. Majority male and not one (barring non English doc mentioned) viewed heavy bleeding as an issue worthy of their time.

I'm sure there are some exceptions. But being a specialist in a particular area doesn't mean you're automatically sympathetic to all patients! Or that you're going to explore every solution, or read their notes, or listen to what they say....!

I was in the same boat a few years ago, bleeding like a stuck pig as another poster so eloquently put it ;-)

The reason that the GP is suggesting a coil is because they are low risk, cheap, reversible and effective. They can whack one in in minutes, you don't need a general anaesthetic, or hospital, or anything else. For many people, Mirena works wonders. They are an excellent solution for a lot of women.

If you have discounted Mirena, then you are skipping to the next level of intervention like ablation, or in serious cases hysterectomy. More expensive, more complications, more NHS resources, non-reversible, not suitable for everyone. Those are the options you try once you've tried everything else and it doesn't work.

Of course the GP is recommending a coil - they wouldn't be doing their job if they weren't.

Is the polyp in your uterus? You should get it removed. The pill won't address the presence of a polyp! I had a uterine polyp which caused multiple miscarriages. Why would they leave it there? It caused irregular bleeding for me.

As a family anyone who has had a coil has t got on with it the thought of the coil makes me all panicky I hate tampons to the thought of the coil makes me want to cry I don't no why

Yes Ming, really.

Supposedly only where it hasn't been fitted correctly, however one of DPs ex partners was a health professional who was quite convinced hers was correctly fitted. So there you go.
