To be so pissed off with this doctor

have had really heavy periods for years now.they have tried the pill and loads of different tablets on me. non worked and I don't want the coil. They gave me a scan just before Christmas got told I had a polip. I then went for another test today it's been re arranged 3 times. The doctor told me they would remove the polip although it wasn't making my periods heavy. He then said he would try me on the pill.told him I had tried that then listed everything else I had tried and tried to tell him the reason I was referred to him was because nothing else had worked. We settled on trying the injection and he then inspected me. On leaving he gave me a leaflet for the surgery and about the coil which I don't want ahhh

I had a Polyp and thought I would bleed to death.
Fortunately managed to get an emergency referral to get it removed.

Sorry for you. But why not try the coil ?

Nomorenails1 · 09/03/2017 23:01

I'm having the polip removed and agreed on the injection afterwards but he then after examining me gave me leaflets on the coil and said they would fit it after my polip was removed

Mirena coil literally changed my life. I was housebound for 5 days a month due to flooding, and I'm now on my 4th coil...they're replaced same day and I wouldn't be without it. My eldest DD has got one too. Best invention ever.

Pigeonpost · 09/03/2017 23:06

I got a Mirena in July. I bled pretty much constantly for the first 6 months. It has now settled to only bleeding on and off for 2 weeks at a time. Less heavy and less painful than without but not enough to make it worthwhile IMO. My menstrual cup has actually discoloured for being in for so long and I can't go anywhere without a sanitary towel in my bag. Not worth the injection in my cervix involved getting the effing thing in but can't face having it out.

Expellibramus · 09/03/2017 23:07

They can whack one in in minutes

🤢

callmeadoctor · 09/03/2017 23:24

Can you be referred to a gynaecologist?

Solo · 09/03/2017 23:28

Mirena made me bleed constantly fpor 17 months and caused lots of other unpleasant side effects. I would never recommend it.

Darlink · 09/03/2017 23:31

Yes

Seeingadistance · 09/03/2017 23:31

I'm another fan of the Mirena coil. Before I got it, I was having heavy bleeding every three weeks, and for at least one or two days every time I couldn't leave the house because it was so bad. Now, I get some spotting from time to time, but don't even bother using sanitary protection because it's no more than a few small marks on my undies. And I feel so much better in myself.

In my experience, having the coil inserted was less bother than putting a tampon in, and once its in it's there for years.

It sounds as if other options aren't working for you. Don't dismiss the coil because the idea is scary. The reality is far less scary and actually very good!

ItShouldHaveBeenJingleJess · 09/03/2017 23:37

I have a friend who thinks it's brilliant. My personal experience was less happy - I experienced unexpected on/off bleeding for about a year. If you don't want it, don't have it. Guys can take responsibility for contraception too, you know...

witwootoodleoo · 10/03/2017 00:02

Random question but has anyone checked your thyroid levels? Thyroid problems can cause heavy periods

Itsnotwhatitseems · 10/03/2017 00:15

what about the implant?

DrFoxtrot · 10/03/2017 00:28

It's difficult OP but there isn't an infinite supply of treatments. They can only offer what's available, assuming you don't want surgery? The beauty of the coil is that you can have it removed if you hate it.

I love my Mirena coil, second best decision I ever made and it would have to be prised from my dead lifeless body.

Janey50 · 10/03/2017 03:33

Another vote here for the Mirena. I had my first one 18 years ago,and am now on my 3rd and last one as I'm 53 now. The difference it made to my 'monthly misery' was unbelievable. I have not had a period for 13 years now! Also, the previous poster who said her partner had injured himself on a coil twice?! Really?! I have never ever heard of thia before! Hmm

Tiptoethr0ughthetulips · 10/03/2017 07:19

You needed his opinion and it is obviously that the coil could improve your symptoms. If I were you I'd be trying it, you can have it removed if it doesnt help.
The injection is in your system for 3 months...I know which option I'd be going for.

JamAndBread · 10/03/2017 07:36

I volunteer with a gyne women's charity: the coil is absolute marmite. Some women love them and some women hate them.

Unfortunately the only way to really find out which you are is to try it and try to persevere with it for at least 6months. Easier said than done!

While you're deciding whether to try it, you could talk to you GP about a removal plan - if you did agree to it and found it unbearable ask him what the plan would be to get it removed. Having more knowledge of your options might help.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 10/03/2017 07:41

You have my sympathy OP, but honestly, there's only so many treatments available.

If there's (eg) 10 options, 5 haven't worked, 3 you're not even prepared to try and 2 are major irreversible operations and not without life changing risk, YABU to be pissed off with the doctor.

Is it surgery that you want? Could you go private? They might be more likely to agree to it.

Having said all that, I'll cross my fingers for you that removing the polyp does the trick.

Artus · 10/03/2017 07:47

I had two polyps removed and my heavy irregular bleeding stopped almost overnight. I was nearing or at the menopause thoughGood Luck!.

oleoleoleole · 10/03/2017 07:52

Ask for a hysterectomy.

OliviaStabler · 10/03/2017 07:57

My mirena was amazing. Really hurt on and off for the first two weeks but in a few months my periods stopped and I haven't had a period in 4 years.

TinfoilHattie · 10/03/2017 08:00

Ask for a hysterectomy.

If you think of the way of dealing with heavy periods as a progression through various stages, hysterectomy is the end-game. GPs start with tranexamic acid, then Mirena, then more investigations, then potentially ablation or minor surgery, then maybe embolisation if you have fibroids, and finally hysterectomy.

I've had a hysterectomy - it's MAJOR SURGERY. It's not just something you can ask for. It has to be the right thing for you depending on your age, whether your family is complete and so on, and means two or three nights in hospital and a long recovery. It is not to be taken lightly.

Yes it's something to consider and it's certainly solved my issues for once and for all, but you can't just march into the GP and ask for a hysterectomy when you haven't been prepared to explore less invasive options first.

Wearingmybiggirlpants · 10/03/2017 08:08

Agree with everything Tinfoil says, they take you through a process. I tried tranexamic acid (made me ill) Mirena coil (periods so bad my body expelled it) and was eventually referred for a hysterectomy. Even then your case has to go to a panel before the funding is agreed. There are things to help and if the pill isn't the answer for you then why not give the coil a try?

picklemepopcorn · 10/03/2017 08:17

Mirena was awful for me, and I found the fitting quite traumatic. Removal was a doddle and wasn't hard to arrange.

MTBMummy · 10/03/2017 08:22

I don't blame you being hesitant about the coil, it seriously made me suicidal, and not just during PMT, but the entire fucking month, except for the 5 days of my period, which was so heavy I would regularly flooded both a tampon and the pad. The best thing I did was coming off it.

Snugglepalace · 10/03/2017 08:28

I am in the exact same position. I have a large polyp and very heavy periods.
After months and months of having the mirena pushed onto me, I got referred to a gynaecologist. A polyp was found and I agreed to have an ablation.
Unfortunately, I chickened out of it and regret it so much as my periods have been hell since. I am back on the waiting list to have the ablation sometime this year.
