To burn my house down? Lighthearted. Maybe.

Bit freaked out. Heard a loud smashing sound earlier while I was sat eating my dinner. Got up to see what it was and nothing appeared to be broken, so thought maybe it had come from the neighbour's house (even though it had sounded too loud).

Then just now I went to get a glass of water, opened my cupboard to see that a glass mug had spontaneously smashed itself whilst sat in the cupboard. WTF? I grabbed a glass because the reason I'd gone downstairs was to take a tablet, and the first glass I picked up has curiously got what appears to be a pentagram on the bottom formed from residue from the dishwasher.

Please provide rational explanations so I don't have to burn my house down/move/call a priest.

How old was the glass? Could it have had fractures? Was it under anything? could it have been just combusting from heat /pressure

Glass is only solid at room temperature. It is actually a liquid. When making coloured glass it is usually a think skim of colour blown inside a clear bubble rather than a solid chunk of glass ( would be too dark to see colour ). Glass colours cool at different temperatures and this causes stress within the glass...so it cools in a kiln very slowly to release the stress... so sometimes coloured glass which has not been cooled slowly enough will seemingly just smash...the thicker the glass the longer to cool... lenses in telescopes can take months to cool properly.... as for the pentagram...burn down the house!

I once had a glass plate spontaneously explode into a thousand pieces before my eyes for no reason at all. Completely freaked me out. Research (googe) revealed that some types of toughened glass crockery an be weakened by dishwashers and can just explode. No idea about the hexagram though. That'll be ghosts I expect.

It wasn't under anything, and not sure how old it was but I reckon quite old! It was one of those really naff glass mugs like your gran used to have. As you can see, my mug collection is quite shit special. I don't drink hot drinks so I don't care Grin.

Emmy - not in this house but other places I've lived in yes.

Fuck me you're right, it's a hexagram not a pentagram. Just googled and that's the mark of the beast. I think I should get packing.

Of course you shouldn't just burn down your house OP.

You should bury freaky pentagram glass in your garden, scrub your hands with a nail brush because you TOUCHED THE GLASS and you'll be possessed (if you drank out of it to take your tablet that's even worse; you'll wake up to find poltergeists have eaten your head ). Then burn down your house. And salt the earth.

It's not a poltergeist- it's an invisible tarantula crawling around your cupboards knocking glasses over and carving marks into glasses with its fangs.

A pentagram is a sign of peace and the elements combined with the goddess

So the five points just represent Earth Air, Fire and Water, with the top one representing the goddess, all held together within the circle which is just the spirit as a whole

An inverted pentagram (when the two points point upwards) is the Satanic version, I don't say that to scare you, you'll be fine, I'm sure you are not being possessed! I'll see if I can post a pentagram photo

Not sure if an invisible tarantula is worse, think i might burn down the house for a tarantula... exploding glasses are a thing tho, especialy if they are old- or dishwashered x
