To expect a Dualit toaster to last more than two years?

I have always wanted one and loved mine until it started blowing the electrics for the whole house.

Unfortunately John Lewis tell me it is out of warranty after over two years of use and they won't help.

I thought under the Salenof Goods Act I had a bit longer but is it unreasonable to expect a toaster to last for more than two years if it is an expensive one?

I don't know which brand to fork out for next

YABU I'm afraid. After two years you are long past the "reasonable expectation of it working" phase.

Think about it, if manufacturers expected the product to last for years, they would be happy to slap on a five or ten year guarantee. Why do some knives come with a 30 year guarantee? Because the manufacturer is confident it will last longer than people's memory of where they purchased it or where the receipt is.

Remember that an expensive product will not necessarily last longer than a cheap one. You are paying for the brand, for the appearance, for specific features perhaps. But these things do not mean that the components are better or that it will last longer.

Same here. I have had cheap Argos toasters last longer.

Ours is still going after 16 years.

You can replace the heat things( non techy person),have you tried that?

I thought Dualit had some kind of million year guarantee, or that they repaired toasters for you, or something along those lines. Have you looked on their website?

I've had mine about 10 years with no problems! It's not one of the 'proper' Duality ones though it's their version of a normal toaster, they are much cheaper. Mine's an older model of this one m.johnlewis.com/dualit-lite-2-slice-toaster-with-warming-rack/p/231618602

We've had ours for 14 years, so yes it should last longer.

And the Sale Of Goods Act has been replaced with another law which basically gets rid of the "reasonable expectation" clause. .

I found this out last week as my Bosch dishwasher, only 2 months out of its 5 year warranty, is unrepairable. I tried the "Sale Of Goods" act speech and the John Lewis chap googled it and showed me that it has now been replaced.

I would expect it to last longer yes. That's why you pay quite a bit more for them, surely.

I've had my Dualit for 11 years and still going so yes I would expect to last a bit longer. Could you try approaching Dualit themselves?

Our is about 20 years old, still going strong. It should definitely last longer than a few years

I've had mine for many years and am an ardent toast fan. Before that I had an incredibly cheap one which lasted 15years and was still working when I replaced it.

I think you've been unlucky TBH. If they are used in professional kitchens as I believe the often are,mthe you are built to last.

Have you contacted Dualit directly? Or get a local person to have a look, blowing electrics for the whole house must indicate some fault that could be quite straightforward?

Taken from the Dualit website. Mine is just over a year old and after spending a ridiculous amount for a toaster, I'd be expecting it to last longer than 2 years.

No have not approached Dualit as thought my contract was with John Lewis.

All the people saying they had had theirs forever and ever- that is what I had heard/ thought but the internet seems to be littered with people with the same problems.

Had forgotten how painful grilling toast every morning for two kids is and remembering to turn it before it goes black!

When DH and I got our first house I really wanted dualit couldn't afford so went for a delonghi 4 slice one. 7 years later it's still going strong.

Sounds really silly but our Duality kept tripping the electrics. I contacted them and they said to check there wasn't anything stuck in the toaster as that could do it. I thought they were being ridiculous...Turns out there was a rogue sultana from a hotcross bun stuck in the grill bits. Removed it and it's been fine ever since. Thought I'd mention it...Just in case. Ours is 6 years old, yours definitely should last longer.

The plug itself? Not a silly question and I don't remember my gcse physics. You mean change a fuse??

My knowledge of plugs is about the same as yours

If the house electrics are blowing, them I'd change the plug fuse and see if that made a difference.

But I would expect my Dualit toaster to last longer than two years. We've had ours for at least seven years.
