To think this in my CO-OP is wrong???

They've started selling sausage rolls in the bakery, and they are on the shelf with all the bread and cakes. I called over a member of staff and said politely, "I think there's been a mistake, there's meat in these rolls... they need to be in the fridge". She got shirty and insisted they didn't need to be refridgerated as they were cooked! So cooked meat, all day, warm shelf in shop!

Gross!

I wouldn't buy they but also wouldn't berate a shop assistant when they will be told where to put them by management

Just don't buy them.

Like in Greggs then? Or the pasty shop?

I believe they can only keep them warm on the shelf for so long and have to check temperature and throw away under a certain temperature during the day

I think the supermarkets have their in store bakery meat pasty products out on display and not in a fridge. I like a Morrisons steak slice tbh

This is pretty standard for some types of sausage roll, it depends on the product itself whether it needs to be stored in the fridge or not. Just because "it's meat" it doesn't automatically have to be refrigerated, think of chorizo or salami. It very much depends on what other crap ingredients they've put in it.

Or like in Morrisons they do bags of cooked in store sausauge rolls sitting on the counter, it's really not uncommon and I'd brought them many times and at 40 I am alive and well

I would have thought you were right.

If we were going to eat them cold at home I would just let them cool well after cooking (assuming I had baked them myself) and refrigerated until we wanted them.

That can't be right. I got cross in my local Waitrose store because I saw them throwing away fresh sandwiches which had been on display.

They were not in the chiller, & when I asked why, they said they were only allowed to display them for 4 hours at room temperature because they had meat, cheese in.

I think those types of sausage roll mostly contain cereals and preservatives with perhaps a bit of sausage flavouring

But I wouldn't bother saying anything in the shop. I just wouldn't buy them.

Legally there is a 4 hour exemption for hot or ambient holding of this type of product ( food safety temperature control regs 1995)

Are these being kept warm - under heat lamps, or are they literally just on a shelf?
I would have thought it would either have o be kept warm at a specific temperature, for a limited time, or refrigerated.
I wouldn't be buying them.

pretty much every supermarket has their in store sausage rolls, etc in a non refrigerated display. Greggs isn't refridgerated either

This isn't a new thing. Loads of shops do it. I've bought bags of sausage rolls from supermarket bakeries, no ill effects. If they're baked and sold on the same day it really isn't a big deal. Don't think it was worth having a word with a shop assistant about.

I'm not surprised! As she works there she will have had training on bb dates/food safety etc so she'll know what she's doing! Telling her how to do her job was a bit but at least she'll have a great story to tell friends and family

Not like a Morrisons hot food bit where they are monitored/ near the deli. Just baked in morning with stuff, there at 5pm. Don't think the bakery is in store, or if it is its just a morning thing before opening.

I'd have warm off the shelf myself, but not after all day there. They only top up in am and close at 8

So many artificial additives and preservatives in most commercial sausage 'meat' you'd probably have to inject MRSA into it to pose an infection risk. I wouldn't eat them because they are disgusting mashed up trotters, brains and old pig skin but that's just me.

This isn't a new thing at all.

Morrisons have cooked in store sausage rolls in bags on the counter, I've not brought them as I don't like dc having many sausages but I can't imagine they would do any harm.
The independent coffee shop here has cooked sausauge rolls and veg pasties cooled in the counter ( neither under a lamp or refrigerated) and ds has had the veg pasties before to no ill effects

If you want a hot one in greggs they are under a heat lamp but the normal ones are just at room temperature

I also find it bizarre to see bags of sausage rolls next to the bags of doughnuts (and I've never seen the staff at our Co-op checking their temps).

But I reckon I have food OCD cos I can't understand the shelf life of baby food in hats etc sat there in warm supermarkets containing chicken etc. Must be preserved to hell.

I'd have no issue with counter or deli etc... I'm surprised people would buy a cold one up to 8hours later on a shelf.

I guess they know their market... and it's not me!

Just remembered the sausage rolls and pasties we get at large scale Scout camps that are specifically used because they're frozen then when defrosted they're fine at ambient temperature for same day eating.
