to let DS15 wax his top lip?

Poor DS15 is very upset with his very dark, fuzzy top lip. He is very very pale and blonde, and, to be honest, it doesn't look good. He wants to use ladies' wax, not shave. Is this OK? Will it grow back thicker or worse? It's only his lip, nowhere else. I have no brothers, so no idea what to advise.

You can get wax strips for this. If that's what he wants to do I'd let him.

At 15, I'd let him do as he chooses with regards to facial hair.

Male facial hair isn't anything like female facial hair, it's much thicker and on a sensitive area like the lip it will be hugely painful for him. He should shave it.

He's 15, he can shave or wax or whatever he wants with his own facial hair

I know it's time, just don't know which is the best option. He says his friends wax at first before shaving.

I think he's scared of cutting himself. He's still got real baby skin apart from the top lip.

I thought a bumfluff 'tache was a male right of passage? Get the lad a razor! I'm pretty sure that's what they were invented for.

Any reason why he doesn't want to shave? Maybe have a chat with him about that, sounds like he may be anxious for some reason.

if he wants to try, encourage him to do it at the beginning of half term so he can hide if it goes wrong.

Ah, cross post, I think wax would be much more traumatic to his soft skin than a razor! How about an electric one?

I would treat him to a visit to a professional waxer this first time. It will be pretty inexpensive.

DS1, who's also 15, has started shaving his mustache. He just uses a safety razor, he's had the odd nick but nothing serious.
BTW, it's name was Johnny and I think we were all a bit sad to see it go.

I can't imagine him with a face full of foam. This is all very new to me. Do they sell teenager electric shavers or do you go straight for the mountain man adult size one?

I think he will find it pretty painful to be honest and wouldn't encourage it. It's a sensitive area and he is quite likely to be left with a raw red strip rather than smooth skin. I would get him a decent safety razor and tell him to take it slow..

I'd get him a basic electric razor (Philips do a men's travel razor fro about £13 which has two heads on it) That's what we bought for my DS when he was first shaving. I think the ones with rotating round heads are gentler than the ones that are a kind of strip blade.

I wouldn't advise waxing - the skin on his lip will be very delicate and I think waxing would really pull it and make it red and sore. I'd go for electric razor and then when he's a bit older he might decide he prefers to wet shave (or if he's lazy like my DS, grow a beard ! )

There will come a time when he won't be able to wax it as mens hair is a lot stronger. Waxing his baby/fluffy hairs on his lip will stimulate growth.

When I managed a salon I used to wax a transvestite's facial hair, it was bloody hard work but it wasn't that which distressed me, it was how much pain she must have been in because her hair was so thick. For this reason alone I wouldn't recommend Waxing a man's facial hair.
