There are loads of other threads. But MN aren't highlighting them. Why not? I demand to know.

Serene & wise indeed: behold that happy visage, and the paw positioned not only to tell me I am loved & special but also that I'd better not get any ideas about stopping stroking him before he considers his head & ears adequately fussed Wink

An American journalist I follow on Facebook posted a link to this article, some good stuff:

PseudoBadger · 08/02/2017 06:30

The post rate on this thread is the highest ever seen on MN in 47 years. Fact

klassy · 08/02/2017 07:05

Here to give some "balance" with the last few tweets Trump will see on his timeline. (Is this "balance" do you think, am I doing it right?)

Things move so fast - thanks for the new thread. The link to MSNBC is instructive.

Can I nominate Zebra Cat for POTUS. At least Zenra Cat thinks and has a sensible paw policy to get what he wants without banning Muslims.

Senator Warren was told to shut up when reading a letter criticising Sessions and her speech cut short.

New Democratic hero?

I found a possible good positive side effect of Trump winning:

Lena Dunham lost her appetite and lost weight.

I can see it in a weight watchers campaign.

Michelle must be envious of him.

klassy · 08/02/2017 07:33

I'm guessing many of you will have seen this email too? (Sorry for long copy and paste):

Dear

Breitbart - aka Trump News - is on its way to Europe. But thanks to heavy pressure from SumOfUs members and other campaign groups, over 800 of its advertisers have taken their business away from the hateful news outlet.

Now we need to scale up this campaign - and the stakes for democracy couldn’t be higher. Steve Bannon, the former CEO of the white nationalist website Breitbart News and now chief White House strategist was just given a seat on the National Security Council - making him one of the most powerful unelected people in the world.

Bannon used a flood bigoted demagoguery and fake news stories to install Trump in the White House. Now Foreign Policy Magazine is calling him “President Bannon” - and the Independent is calling him “the unelected figurehead running the White House”.

In a climate of growing uncertainty and violence for so many people, we can’t let Breitbart spread its ideology of bigotry and fear to Europe. Can we count on your support to scale up our campaign to stop it?

Yes, I'll chip in £1 now to fight back against Trump News going global.

SumOfUs, as a global corporate accountability watchdog, is in a unique position to fight back -hard. We’ve already helped convince corporations, universities and companies to ditch Breitbart. We're super close to a number of key wins in this campaign, and with your support we can take our campaign to the next level.

Here’s just some things we can do with your support:

launch major campaigns to get advertisers to dump Trump News including scale up our existing campaigns against Amazon, Shopify and others to include dozens more;
use online ads to warn readers that Breitbart is not a worthy news source;
file complaints with media regulation agencies;
financially support other grassroots efforts to fight back against Breitbart, and support legitimate local media outlets.
This is worse than many of us thought it would be. Since Trump’s inauguration, person after person from Breitbart has left to work in the White House. Each subsequent executive order signed by President Trump reads like a page out of Breitbart - and that’s because many of them are.

Mr Bannon’s past statements, aired primarily on Breitbart, are serving as the playbook for Trump’s administration. And if it has its way, Breitbart wants to go global.

The implications of this cannot be overstated. Breitbart already has unprecedented access and a direct line to the West Wing, the closest thing we’ve ever seen to state-run media.

SumOfUs specializes in corporate accountability - and we have the tools and means to fight back right now. With your support we can run more campaigns targeting advertisers, get experts drafting complaints, run local campaigns to push back against Breitbart's expansion, and fund much-needed local media.

Please chip in £1 or whatever you can now so we can get to work fighting Trump News’ global expansion.

Our campaign is already making waves. Over 330,000 SumOfUs members have signed a petition calling on Amazon to drop Breitbart. And Amazon just announced it is looking into a “longer term solution to use a 3rd party brand safety, which may block Amazon.com ads from showing up on certain pages on sites like Breitbart in the future" - in part because of our pressure.

And last week alone, SumOfUs members helped get nearly one dozen advertisers to drop Breitbart.

The world feels extra scary right now - particularly for those who are and will be most affected by Trump’s policies. But together we can fight back in meaningful and tangible ways.

Thanks for all that you do,

Emma and the team at SumOfUs

Woke up to the scary news that the Republican Senate is now enforcing a rule about not speaking ill of another Senator. That rule is not meant to be utilised during debates about confirmation of a candidate to an office. How can they reasonably debate whether or not someone is fit for office if they can only say good things? This is bad. Very bad. This is where any dissenting voice in government is shut down, a frightening development.

The journalists will be next, unfortunately.

Angry Spice is in hot water at the moment. One can only hope he will turn whistle blower.

GingerIvy · 08/02/2017 07:45

Oh, and due to the spectacular military fuck up recently, Yemen has withdrawn permission for any American troops on the ground. At all.

amispartacus · 08/02/2017 07:45

I've just read in The Huffington Post (for what that is worth) that President Trump is butthurt because he signed an executive order appointing Bannon to the National Security Council without reading it and realizing that he was appointing Bannon to the National Security Council

If you rewatch Yes Minister and Yes PM, you'll see it with new eyes.

How to get polls to get the right answer
How to answer press questions

From the Civil service - get a politician to sign a complex document giving more power to the civil service by asking them when in a rush so they don't check.

Leaking to disrupt a plan

Ok - so it's not the West Wing but it's relevant.

Hello new thread.

StumblyMonkey · 08/02/2017 07:55

I really need to catch up on the thread but for now....This American Life podcast episode is worth listening to (I'm listening on my commute at the mo)...

"This week we document what happened when the President’s executive order went into effect temporarily banning travel from seven countries, and we talk about the way it was implemented. A major policy change thrown into the world like a fastball with no warning. It’s hard not to ask: “What just happened? What was that all about?”

The Senate has now made Warren the story...

So a minor issue from a letter along time ago has suddenly blown up into a big issue and is being talked about worldwide.

Cynical side - the Republicans now what they are doing and are using this to get at Trump

Or...they fucked up and have been used by the Democrats

edition.cnn.com/2017/02/07/politics/elizabeth-warren-silenced/index.html

Meanwhile, the Democratic National Committee blasted out a supportive statement, with interim chairwoman Donna Brazile saying: "It's a sad day in America when the words of Martin Luther King Jr.'s widow are not allowed on the floor of the United States Senate. Let Elizabeth Warren speak."
