... to wonder about Apple Tree Yard and filming on location in London

I've watch the series, and having worked in that area many years ago, I recognize many of locations/sets. When I worked there it was always so busy, so many people, ...etc...

I find it amazing they were able to film so much on location, not just a once off, but over a number of episodes.

And Emily Watson continues to be such an interesting actress.

They don't usually film in sequence, so they will have the location for one day (or morning/evening) and film all the scenes in the location for the whole series in one go. They also have very early starts and late finishes, so could be filming at 6am or 11pm.

Interesting point op. I was wondering the same thing last night, when I watched Bridget Jones's Baby. How did they film the concert scene with Ed Sheeran?

It's the same for any filming on location, they'll need a permit to film and have set times when they'll film all the scenes in that place consecutively but not necessarily in chronological order :)

I've not seen Brigit Jones, what was filmed at Ed Sherans concert?

If anything is filmed in public there will be signs up telling people they may be filmed, what its for & how they can opt out if they want to :)

There is also a dedicated police unit for filming in London. Who knew that?!

I work in the city and we get an email telling us there will be disruption to transport, restaurants etc when filming is taking place, it's only ever for 48hrs, usually over the weekend when the city is dead.

A film was filmed in my town not so long ago. Roads and pavements were blocked off for filming. Bit of a pain but interesting to watch.

sooperdooper it was filmed at a festival, I may have missed which one or they may not have said. But Bridget crowd surfed and there where a lot of extras.

Part of Bridget Jones's Baby was filmed in Woolwich. There was a scene in Sainsbury's, not seen the film but they filmed from 9-5pm in the actual store and it remained open.

I've always wondered how the Bourne crew managed to film in Waterloo station. It was packed - were those real people or extras? The latter, surely, given that there was shooting.

When I lived in London, a film company used the square where I lived to film some scenes for a film. It took them a day to put the square "back in time" - they temporarily resurfaced the roads, painted some front doors, brought in loads of props. On the filming day there were lots of extras all in old costumes and vintage cars driving round. Then after filming, they had to put everything back to how it was.
When I watched the finished film a couple of months later, the actual scene was probably less than 30 seconds long.

The tend to film on a Sunday, there are few people around in the city/legal areas on a Sunday. Several tube stations in these areas are closed on a Sunday and I noticed Temple station was used in one of the scenes. Court buildings are often used for filming at the weekends, the Royal Courts of Justice, due to its palatial Victorian Architecture is booked out to film crews for many weekends of the year.
I have noticed that the facade of the Halcyon hotel is the former Land Registry Building in Lincolns Inn Fields.

The bourne Waterloo scene was real commuters.

Ime, a road/square/station platform is closed down by dozens of self-important production assistants in headsets. We once had some scenes filmed on our street and the production team tried to get us to sign forms to say that we wouldn't leave our houses when they were filming so as not to cause them any problems, they tried to stop us parking etc . I honestly wouldn't mind cooperating if they were a bit politer but I do get tired of being told that I can't walk here/there/wherever because a film crew has descended especially as often they seem to think I'll be impressed by the whole nuisance of it.

How did Top Gear film that London scene?

I'm watching this - is anyone else suspicious of the Ben Chaplin character, her lover? I'm not convinced he's a spook and don't think he's going to be a good person.

Hazel, not many (any?) of the tube stations shut at the weekend, but they are much quieter.

I used to live in the area - The Imitation Game transformed Chancery Lane into a bombed out street - it was absolutely fabulous seeing it. Totally realistic and convincing. DP and I walked down it one night (before we realised!) and it was very eerie.

I read that for Bourne they set up a decoy shoot in the station as well to draw off gawpers then filmed the real one before people realised what was happening.

I too am suspicious of Ben Chaplin. She has gone to the spook conclusion on little evidence. The flowers and texts from a new number saying George....how does she know they really are?

The production company for Spooks and Ashes to Ashes etc is based near where I work and used to use lots of local locations. We would see that filming a lot and spot the location signs around. Spooks is fun to watch as I play 'spot where that place really is'.

I walked into Borough Market on one of its closed days once and found it had been transformed into a Victorian railway station. It looked amazing! My first thought, genuinely, was that I had travelled in time.

They filmed a TV series at my workplace a few years ago and there were scenes where the main character is sat at my desk - really odd seeing my son's drawings which were pinned to the noticeboard on TV!

I have no experience of the film industry....but thanks to the comments posted above I'll watch out in the next episode for time of day for outdoor scenes (early? late?).

I did notice that it looks cold...so that would reduce the number of people in the vicinity of filming.

I think it does a good job to capture that area of London, based on my memories of the locations I knew so wellmany years ago.
