Facebook and Lost Bank cards

AIBU to think that if you find a bank card on the floor in town, you just hand it in to the bank? Is there really any need to take a picture, post it on Facebook and launch a manhunt to find the cards owner?

It really pisses me off that the first thing people think to do is take to Facebook, so people can tell them what a saint they are for trying to track down the cards owner.

It even says on the card "if found, please return to any branch of..."

Theres hardly any banks open in my town anymore. There is one thats open 2 days a week and one shut last week for good. Plus I work full time. I wouldnt go out my way to travel to a branch of the particular bank at my own expense, so if I found a bank card in my town this is something I probably would do. People have done it on our local community page. Dont need to be told Im a "saint" either for doing so, as long as person it belongs to gets it back thats all that matters.

Yes I agree, who wants their bank card details posted there for anyone to see?!

It annoys me too on my local Facebook group when people have found random things in the street (e.g. lost toys), they put up a post saying they've taken it home and if it's yours you can collect from X rather than just saying where it is. Not everyone's on Facebook ffs, or won't necessarily see the post. If I've lost something I generally retrace my steps to look for it, I wouldn't expect someone to take it home with them!

YANBU. You hand it into the bank, stick it in the post to the bank, or give the bank a call incase the owner doesn't yet know its missing and hasn't cancelled it.

People do it where I live because the bank is miles away. Can't take it to the police station unless it's between it's random opening hours. So folks tend to put found stuff (bank account details are always hidden) on fb with a "will take to the bank next week when in town if not claimed" type thing.

In my town all the major banks are open 6 days a week.

People still put them on Facebook.

Do people who lose their cards ever look for them on Facebook?

I lost my card a couple of months ago and just called the bank immediately to cancel it and get a new one. No idea if anyone was trying to find me and if they were then contacting a stranger, arranging to meet them and possibly having to travel to the other side of town to collect my card is a lot more hassle than just cancelling it.

It depends where you are when you find them. If I find a card or a teddy on my way to or from the station, I am nowhere near a bank and won't be in town before the weekend. The police station will be closed and is at the other side of town also. I would probably start by posting a photo, it might help to find the owner the same evening.

Most "found" posts on my local mums group found the owner, directly or via friends.

Annoys me too. We had one on our local community forum (not F/Book) where the woman who'd found the card on her drive actually knew who had dropped it (a local delivery driver, delivering parcels from Next, etc). Posted a picture of the card and asked if anyone knew her. Well, clearly the poster of the details knew to whom the card belonged, but thought it wise to post all the details on a public forum instead of either giving it back to her, or phoning the bank to inform them the card had been found, so they can then contact the owner. Had I been the owner of that card I would not have been very happy. I did say as much at the time.

Some people appear to have no common sense at all.

A fbook friend of mine once posted

"I found a nationwide bank card outside of nationwide today, if you've lost one tell me your name and you can have it back"

Eh? Just go into the bloody bank you found it outside of and hand it in?!?!

I did this the other day, put it in an envelope and posted it through the bank door. No need for the FB drama.

Strange, I saw this exact post on Fb yesterday. Lady who posted said she had phoned the bank and they had said they couldn't take it

You don't have to be near a bank - you could just call the Customer Services Dept and give them the details. Teddies are different. I'm sure no bank wants to start taking in all lost property

Agree! anything found and it has to be posted on FB for praise! I have even seen those who have found something, done the right thing and handed it in and then still have to brag about what saints they are on facebook

Well the posts I have seen on my local Community page do seem to result in them being returned to their owner. Ive never seen a picture of a bank card though, its usually just where it was found.

I dropped my purse in the high street near my house. I cancelled my cards that afternoon when I realised. That evening I had a message in my "other" Facebook message folder (that folder doesn't exist anymore on the current Facebook) from someone who found my purse and lived 5 mins away. I dropped my purse on the same high street a year later and someone took it to my local bank branch about a mile away and the branch manager phoned me and I went to collect it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who gets annoyed by the Facebook Do-Gooders!

People who lose bank cards generally tend to cancel them asap and order a new one, not trawl facebook to look for them.

I left my kindle at the train station a few months ago, and Didn't realise until I got home. Someone found it and posted a thing on Facebook to 'track me down' which was great! I thought I had lost it forever! Only problem being that she didn't hand it in to lost property at the station (15 min drive from my house), she took it all the way back to her house (a 4 hour drive from my house) and I had to pay to have it posted to me, which she did 4 weeks later. She later told me she was annoyed I didn't send her a reward.

I have seen a couple of posts where the owner didn't even realise that they had lost their cards when they saw them.

More likely to happen when someone loses their card at the supermarket and the FB tells them it has been handed to customer service, but it does happen. Supermarkets are the only places opened pretty much 24/7.

This is the one currently doing the rounds. Apparently they've searched on FB and can't find the owner by name. They should have handed it in to a nearby shop, surely? If I lost my bank card I would return to where I knew I had it last and enquire if it had been handed in!

And that's probably why most people don't just hand cards into banks or other lost property to stations or supermarket customer services if they were found there.

If they make a big thing about how they're trying to track you down and you know who they are then they're probably hoping you'll say, "oh thank you so much, you're so wonderful, here have £20 for your trouble."

If it gets to you via the bank or station lost property you won't know who they are and can't reward them.

When you find something like that, you bloody well hand it in, you don't take it home, for crying out loud!! And you certainly don't demand a "reward" for finding it.

When DH found one the other week he called the bank to tell them then dropped it off at the bank in town immediately. The bank called the person who lost it and they picked it up from the bank shortly after we dropped it off. They were saved a job of cancelling and reordering and they got it back within 30 mins.

If you aren't near a bank it's harder but I don't think I'd put it on FB. When we called up the bank said they would cancel it for security if we couldn't get it to the bank/police within a short space of time.

YANBU OP I cant bear the facebook do gooders, and its not just bank cards either.

Ours recently had a post from the wife of a private taxi driver, someone had got in his car and found a phone on the back seat, rather than hand it to the driver, they took it out the car, took a picture and posted it on a FB group (there quite a few in our city and not everyone sees all the posts), so the owner of the phone, realises its missing, calls the company - Long story short driver is accused of theft, slagged off to high heaven people going ape shit saying they will never use the cab firm again.

So his wife posts the story saying that if you find something in a cab then hand it in so it can get back to the rightful owner - cue millions of idiots saying how stupid she was and that the person who had got it back to the owner had done a good deed... Didnt matter that she has stolen it out of the cab in the first place. I said that if I'd lost something in asda, the first place I'd go back to look would be asda now jump on facebook to see if a do gooder had posted a picture of it, my messages got me deleted .
