Facebook and Lost Bank cards

AIBU to think that if you find a bank card on the floor in town, you just hand it in to the bank? Is there really any need to take a picture, post it on Facebook and launch a manhunt to find the cards owner?

It really pisses me off that the first thing people think to do is take to Facebook, so people can tell them what a saint they are for trying to track down the cards owner.

It even says on the card "if found, please return to any branch of..."

Rant over

on fb with a "will take to the bank next week when in town if not claimed" type thing.

That's pointless as you can cancel and reorder and get a new one within 2-3 days usually.

chickadee That's ridiculous. If I found something near a shop or station I'd hand it in to the closest shop or station as if I'd lost something that's the route I'd take to try and locate it. A purse I would take to the bank on card inside as they would be able to contact you. What on earth makes someone think taking something 4 hours away is "helpful"

I agree with TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot They do it for the chance of a reward I think. Hoping someone will hand them some money for their troubles. On my bank card there is a blood number that says ''If found call...'' put there by the bank!

Let the bank know the card is on FB. They will cancel and reissue as that's a very serious fraud risk.

I recently found a purse with cash and cards outside an out of town Next. I was dashing to a meeting and it was 6pm, so had a quick look and couldn't see anything with an address on. I handed it to the store manager, as I wouldn't be able to get to a bank for several days. I hope it made it home

YouWillNotSeeMe · 01/02/2017 12:02

Even if it was my card and I found it on Facebook, the first thing I would do is cancel it and order a new one, and I'm sure the bank would advise that too.

FooFighter99 · 01/02/2017 12:06

I'm sure I remember seeing something about that Buddah, either on FB or in the DailyM.

Some poor guy's career and reputation was nearly ruined, all because some stupid cow wanted the praise for finding someone's phone!! Ridiculous.

It's not do Gooders, it's attention seeking. "Lets use the power of Facebook to get this back to the owner, Yay, look at me, I'm so wonderfully clever and community spirited".

I regularly pee in the cornflakes of these posts by pointing out the proper ways to return the wholly identifiable items.

Teddies, personal items without names on etc I can understand. Just don't write "the power of Facebook", it makes me want to throw something through my laptop screen.

mambono5 · 01/02/2017 12:08

I hope everyone would cancel their bank cards, but I would be pleased to know where I lost it.

YANBU about people who can't drop the lost item in the bank in front of them.
YABU about the ones who are just trying to be helpful.

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers Maybe we can teach them all not to do this.

I found a bank card in town two days before Christmas, the only bank in town wouldn't take it as it was for another bank (whose nearest branch is a 40 minute drive away) and the police station is only open about 2 hours a week. So, l put a post on our local for sale pages (with details obscured) and within two hours it was collected and returned to the elderly lady who had dropped it, who was extremely grateful that l hadn't posted it to the bank as she would have had no access to her bank over Christmas, so sometimes it's a good thing imo.

YANBU

In our local "community" group we often get people saying:

"Mr XYZ I have something of yours, please DM me what it is and we can arrange a collection"

user892 · 01/02/2017 13:41

When DH found one the other week he called the bank to tell them then dropped it off at the bank in town immediately. The bank called the person who lost it and they picked it up from the bank shortly after we dropped it off. They were saved a job of cancelling and reordering and they got it back within 30 mins.

Any card that's been in someone else's possession could have had the details copied off it and these can be sold / used for online purchases. I'd really hope that a bank would immediately cancel a lost card anyway, even if I was only 30 mins away Shock
