MIL bought DS a dog chew

DS, who is just over two, had been complaining about sore teeth and had been chewing his dummies until they had holes in them and thus didn't function properly any more. We've given him teething gel and soft food for a bit, and tried to encourage him to chew on his Sophie giraffe, he seems better, but MIL brought him home with a dog chew yesterday and said he really enjoyed chewing on it round the shops. It's quite clearly a dog chew, it's a bone shape!

I'm not really sure what to make of it, how would you feel? Is this a thing that is done? Dog chews for children?

My mum did this with my DD! I binned it and still can't figure out WTF she was thinking!

I don't see the issue really - rubber toy that he can chomp on and can then be thrown away...

My DD has a bone shaped dog toy. I bought it because it a different texture. If it is helping him with pain I can't see a problem.

I don't see the issue either? It's clean, plastic and providing comfort even though its a done shape not a car or superhero your son wouldn't care

No I wouldn't like this and the thing would already be in the bin. It's highly unlikely to be BPA free for a start and goodness knows what other chemicals are used in the manufacture of dog toys. There are plenty of suitable teething toys on the market for babies and toddlers without resorting to pet toys.

Be careful you parents with them . . I saw a link on Facebook and the inside of them have been found to be covered in mold . Just saying.

I would bin it.
Many imported dog toys are full of chemicals, lead and other toxins and arent even safe for dogs to chew never mind a baby.

Get a proper teething ring or teething toy.

I thought you meant one of those rawhide things. Or a pig's ear. A plastic bone probably won't harm in the long run although it's a bit unconventional.

I also thought it was one of those dog chews that the dogs eat!! The rubber bone doesn't sound so bad now... hopefully it wasn't second hand

Initially my thoughts were that they're pretty tough but as they're made for dogs, it's unlikely your ds would chew through them. But I do think the pps who've highlighted they're likely full of chemicals and not designed to be used by humans do have a point.

My dsis bought my twins thick teething bangles. They're solid so no holes to allow drool and therefore mould in. Plus the solid rubber means they are much, much harder to chew through. They've certainly had a good going over the years. Dtd is now 4, nearly 5 and still chomps on hers. There's not even a tooth mark in it. like these

That would be my issue as well.

I used to have a stick. Even worse, I used to drag the stick around me on the floor (on a red cord.).

Well, it didn't seem to have hurt (no allergies or anything either) but I wouldn't allow DD to do that....

so, whilst it probably wouldn't hurt DS I'd still bin it. Just to be on the safe side...

Meh. Dogs don't die from chewing them so it's unlikely your DS will. I almost bought DS one when he was tiny, but called it off when I found a second-hand Sophie going for a quid in a charity shop

I honestly don't see the problem. Iv never heard of a dog dying from chewing one and if your ds is getting relief then I'd let him chew it.
