MIL bought DS a dog chew

DS, who is just over two, had been complaining about sore teeth and had been chewing his dummies until they had holes in them and thus didn't function properly any more. We've given him teething gel and soft food for a bit, and tried to encourage him to chew on his Sophie giraffe, he seems better, but MIL brought him home with a dog chew yesterday and said he really enjoyed chewing on it round the shops. It's quite clearly a dog chew, it's a bone shape!

I'm not really sure what to make of it, how would you feel? Is this a thing that is done? Dog chews for children?

I'd be concerned about what it was made out of tbh.

just saw the photo of whats in grows in some Sophie's. can unsee now, all toys in bin

ComputerUserNumptyTwit · 18/01/2017 13:15

If it's an edible thing, it may well not be fit for human consumption. If it's a toy, it might pose a choking risk. What's safe for dogs isn't necessarily safe for humans - goes without saying, really.

mumeeee · 18/01/2017 13:16

I don't see a problem with this. It's just a plastic toy really and I'm sure it's not full or chemicals. If it was it would harm a dog

strawberrypenguin · 18/01/2017 13:19

Don't see the problem, if it helps it's a good idea

ClaryIsTheBest · 18/01/2017 13:21

Why wouldn't plastic toys be full of chemicals?

They often are.

And yes dogs don't die.

But dogs only live.... what? 9-15 years? So. It's not like there's a lot of time to the chemicals to get... what's the English word? Built up? Stuck in?

sparechange · 18/01/2017 13:22

Oh my god, I've just had a brainwave...

Dentastix for toddlers! Gets around those tricky teeth cleaning arguments, relieves sore gums AND keeps their breath fresh Grin

bookwormnerd · 18/01/2017 13:27

Thats weird of mil. I would throw it just as pp due to dont know what chemicals. As an aside have you tried anbesol liquid instead of gel. You can get at pharmacy and works much better or at least did for us. Have used myself when had tooth ache and it works.

My mother bought my son some plastic dog chews for his toy kitchen. They're shaped like lamb chops/chicken legs. They are possibly the ugliest thing ever, and they squeak

Laiste · 18/01/2017 13:41

Re: the sofie thing. I chucked out a load of DDs bath toys only a couple of weeks after buying them for her as they had mold in. I could see it from the outside. Bath ducks and cube things - even though i always always squeeze the water out through the holes at the end of bath time and leave them on the side to drain. I'll never buy anything like that for the bath again. Mould will grow inside anything which traps moisture inside.

Dog chew for DC? No, i'd worry about bits coming off or chemicals. You can get cheap stuff for dogs which is crap quality and it'd be doubly daft to risk this on a child when there are proper teething rings ect. easily available.

xStefx · 18/01/2017 13:42

Aw it must be an old school thing. My MIL gave my daughter a bonio.. A BLOODY BONIO when she was teething and she thought it was funny to post it on facebook. My DH was straight on the fone and told her to take it down and not so it again. In all fairness it wont hurt but with the modern teething aids around today theres just no need.

Willow2016 · 18/01/2017 13:43

Well I wouldnt give my baby something with lead, cadmium and BPAs in them.

Servicesupportforall · 18/01/2017 13:43

God no that's really wierd. Throw it away and tell her please not give him anything that hasn't been marked for human consumption.

Sure as hell pets at home etc would say not to do this.

CaspoFungin · 18/01/2017 13:48

Someone bought a second hand Sophie the giraffe?? A dog toy would be better than that!

FromIbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 18/01/2017 13:49

Another one here who thought you meant a rawhide chew, especially when you added that it was bone shaped.

I couldn't work out why people were saying it was fine!!

lovelearning · 18/01/2017 13:50

Buy him a Kong?

Gymnopedies · 18/01/2017 13:57

YANBU, not human food grade.

For moldy bath toys, bleach will do the job.

OrangeJulius · 18/01/2017 13:58

As someone who has bought vegan dog chews for herself in the past, I can't really judge your MIL.

sparechange · 18/01/2017 13:59

Can't bath toys and Sophies go into a tub of Milton..?

Tangoandcreditcards · 18/01/2017 14:00

Sorry, I can't see the issue - after a fox ate Sophie La Giraffe and I discovered she cost FIFTEEN POUNDS to replace I bought a squeaky sausage (with a face) for £3 from the garden centre (it didn's SAY it was a dog toy...) and DS has been very happy chomping on it. No shame.

OverTheGardenGate · 18/01/2017 14:02

MY HV recommended this for my DD who has SN and a 'chewing everything' problem. Ordinary teething rings were soon destroyed.
I thought it looked a bit odd when she was chewing it but ho hum, it stayed in one piece.

RagamuffinAndFidget · 18/01/2017 14:04

Wasn't Sophie originally intended to be a dog toy anyway? Or have I made that up?
