To think local garage could have let me off 20p!

I called in at the garage with children as we needed milk and I realised I was short 20p. Garage is down the road from my house, they all know me, I know them. I said I was sorry and could I drop it in later. 'No.'

Because they are employees and their employer would not allow them to do that.

The people who staff the garage don't have the discretion to offer credit. Why couldn't you pay with a debit card?

Technically they're in the right - they have to have a blanket policy on allowing customers not to pay or it could get out of control, especially if staff take advantage of it and start letting their friends off 10ps here and there all the time. But goodwill goes a long way and it would be nice if they could stretch to it, especially as you're a local and a regular.

It sucks but you can't really expect them to risk their jobs for it, can you?

The employee would more than likely have had to make up the till balance from their own pocket if it was under at the end of their shift.

Maybe they didn't have any cash on them, or maybe they just didn't want to.

The canteen at work is the same, used to be obliging but people didn't pay back what they owed so had to put a stop to it. Can't blame them if people aren't being honest.

Your request wasn't unreasonable but it would be awkward for them to have agreed to it. Even if you popped in later then there may be different staff on duty. It could get confusing.

Oh no, definitely wouldn't expect them to put their jobs at risk for it :) I didn't have my debit card with me.

I work in my local shop and we'd be in serious trouble if we did that all the time!

Sometimes we'll say to someone if they're a few pennies short it's ok, but to keep quiet about it as we'd really be in trouble otherwise, I'm speaking less than 10p though

It happened to me a couple of times at cafes, both times staff took pennies from their tip jars to make up the difference - I made sure to pay them back with an additional tip!
I wouldn't expect them to, though.

It is kind of my local shop, a bp garage with a spar in it.

This happened to me in my village shop. Knew each other well went to the shop daily for newspapers etc.

I realised 50p had dropped on the way, I asked if I could bring it in later they reluctantly agreed.

When I returned to the shop in the afternoon to give the 50p there was a large post-it stuck to the till (so everyone could see it). In block capitals it read "FAIRISLECABLE OWES 50p.

I felt no loyalty to the shop after that. So I know exactly how you feel.

Why didn't you go back home and get 20p if so local and they know you

If they do for you then many others would do the same and eventually some won't return and till is down

Slightly diff if brought petrol - so can't return it - most give you 24hrs to return and pay - then would call the police

I don't have it Blondes I'd have had to wait for DH to come home which will be in about two and a half hours.

We're allowed to be £2 under before having to pay any shortages, but if our boss saw us letting customers off with not paying the full amount we'd be in for it!

So you had no debit card and didn't have any cash at home at all? Is it normal for you to not have access to 20p?

My local shop would be fine with it, but you can't expect it really, some people would totally take the piss.

No, and I don't think they were embarrassed! :)

On a Thursday it is trifle (I get paid Fridays! :))

I get they knew you but they are a business and many places don't allow for tills to be under by much. Also it's not really the staffs fault you didn't have your purse/debut card for the money you was short
