Collegue lying about illness and blaming me

Absolutely fuming a new starter at work decided she wanted to go home early last week because she was "ill", 2 hours later i go on my break and check my phone to see a long message from her about how she's gone into town to do her Christmas shopping and her DP has bought her an expensive lunch etc etc. So i tell my supervisor when i get back on shift and show her the message and she says she'll deal with it today,so later today i get an angry message from this co worker calling me a snitch and saying she will make my life hell if i don't fess up Confused i told her she shouldn't send people messages like that if she wants to pull a fast one and that when she left her shift we all had to pitch in to do her work for her (she was 30 mins into a 12hr shift when she decided to leave) and ive just found out today she has handed her notice in already as its too hard working in retail !! She's been here two weeks Angry AIBU for telling my boss what she had done ?

Not at all - she was stupid enough to tell you how she'd lied and let everyone down. After only a couple of weeks you definitely have less loyalty to her than your other colleagues. I would have done the same. Good riddance.

You've dodged a bullet. If you had covered her this time, she would have made sure you couldn't say anything when she kept lying...

But who literally does that ?? If your gonna lie at least do it properly Angry i take a real passion in my job and love every second and i hate people that take the piss !! It makes my life and my colleagues lives even harder. Be glad to see the back of her, don't get why she felt the need to message me anyway everyone at work knows I won't hesitate to inform a manager if i know they are doing something wrong Hmm

If someone's stupid enough to send a co-worker a long message about how they're shopping, going out for lunch etc, when they've left work early "sick", then they shouldn't be surprised if their boss finds out about it.

If I was her manager I would have taken action. If not, I would have told her not to involve me in workplace lies and left it at that.

She was clearly taken the piss so I don't think you were unreasonable exactly, but like another poster said, I wouldn't be quite so proud of keeping management informed of everything going on...

I despise liars especially those who blame other people who refuse to cover for them when they get found out. The OP is right, why should she not report people taking the piss at work when she's the one having to pick up the slack for these wastes of space?

Well no , my management do an amazing job as a company and I don't want them getting in trouble by their bosses for employees misbehaving or breaking company rulesHmm you look out for the people you work with. Provided they aren't liers or lazy of course

Yanbu at all OP.

There are a lot of times when being a snitch to management isn't OK - eg if a newbie on probation makes a silly mistake and you see it buy management doesn't. Then it's appropriate to say "you're lucky the boss didn't see that" and help them learn to do better next time and keep your mouth shut.

This wasn't a situation like that. This new starter was clearly taking the piss and wanting to establish a precedent that you would cover for her lies whenever she fancied time off. Not on. You were quite right to nip that in the bud.

Having worked in retail, I know how crap it is when someone pulls a fast one (especially around Xmas). I probably wouldn't have 'told' on a new colleague first time around, I'd have had a talk with them about how if they had been caught they would very likely instantly lose their job and bragging about skiving would not end well.

I totally agree with Trifle though, unfortunately you read like a bit of a tattletale. Who brags about running to the manager to 'inform' on other colleagues??

At a guess I'd say... the people who have to cover that persons work. Who haven't lied and gone swanning off shopping and then bragged about it, but have been required to pick up their slack.

Op I'm with you, you did the right thing. Nothing worse than a shirker at a busy time.

If it were me, I might not have taken it directly to a manager straight away. I would've had told the colleague that text you that it's really unfair to leave colleagues in the lurch and remind her that proof of skivving is enough to get people sacked.

I think (esp at this time of year) jobs are valuable to people. No, it's definitely not right to skive then brag about it and I don't understand how she could do it in good conscience.
But I also don't think someone running to the boss to tell on colleagues is great either. It's a fast track way to alienation.

Err your caollegaue being a twat, leaving you in the lurch o cover for her work, and then fucking bragging toyou about how she's basically skiving, WHILST YOU'RE DOING HER FUCKING WORK... is not a minor infraction in my books.

If she just skived off at lunch for say 2 hours rather than 1, and then came back and apologised and offered to cover for me for an hour - no biggie.

but fucking off in retail at Christmas, and then admitting you're skiving. I'd tell the manager.
