To think Accessorize just screwed me over?

Went in for my sisters present, got her a purse and some socks in a box. Items are 3 for 2 and I noticed an "advent calendar" which was a necklace, bracelet and charms. You open the doors each day to get the pieces. Thought as an extra I could put them together in a little box made up for her. It was reduced to £3 as 3 charms were missing.

I get to the till and lady says that as the item is already reduced it will not be included in the 3 for 2. So I went and got something else that I needn't need. She rings it all through I pay and go home.

On my return I see that the £3 item did get included in the 3 for 2 which meant that I got charged £3 more than I would have done without her input. I can just about forgive this until I get home and find that the "3 charms" that were missing are actually the fucking necklace and bracelet. So now I am left with a bunch of xmas charms that are fucking useless to me unless I go and spend MORE money and drag my poor kids back through the city centre in order to do so.
Fucked off!

I work in retail and from my POV, yes it shouldn't have gone through as part of 3 for 2 as it was reduced, where I work the tills wouldn't allow it, the reduced item would be considered totally seperate. However we encourage customers to fully examine reduced items to check that they still suitable. Was it clearly marked as 3 charms missing? If so then I would go back if possible and explain the full issue. I would hope they would be apologetic and helpful!

Indeed their prices are not great but actually I felt with the 3 for 2 offer it wasn't that bad.
In actual fact I have been left with gifts I cannot even use!

What size bracelet do you need? I make jewellery and can send you a plain chain bracelet you can add your charms to if you like.

Yes it had a tag on it it saying "3 charms missing reduced to £3".

I can take it back but not really to that store. It is in the middle of a busy city and I would have to drag both kids back out in the rain to do so. It is also not at all pram friendly so needed help getting in no one bothered to help me out again

I could take it to another store but I doubt they would give a toss.

Foxy that is very kind of you but I don't want you to be out of pocket for the mistake of a huge company. I could really just get a necklace I never wear and put the charms on but I shouldn't have to should I?

Go I'm Boxing Day and make a scene at the counter, if you don't get what you want, refuse to move, revelling in the fact that you are holding up the queue.

Shout about terrible rip off practices and anything else that comes to mind.

For extra effect, take in your sister and ensures she is on the verge of hysteria.

Failing this ring the shop and ask them if they can offer anything by way of compensation.

You could do that, if you wanted to be an epic twat and have the whole store laughing at you.
It was a mistake, it happens. And if its someones fault, its not really the shop assistants, any more than it was OP's. Why didn't you look at the receipt at the time, it should have been fairly obvious that you overpaid?

I personally wouldn't do as boo says, as it was a reduced item, not sale, they technically don't need to do anything as it's non returnable.

Calmly go in ( to a different store if necessary, I often deal with complaints from another store) and explain the situation. I know we'd always try and be accommodating so would hope others would too. However a calmer attitude will make your point much more clearly than shouting about it, especially before xmas when everyone is stressed. If you came to my till I personally would apologise profusely for the mistake and would bend over backwards to make sure you left happy, but I know others who would very abruptly tell you that they could (would!) not help, particularly with an attitude. Best of luck sorting it!

Take it back. I wouldn't say a necklace and bracelet could be counted as charms tbh. Go to a different store and explain 3 missing charms can be coped with but this is missing major constituent parts. The whole utem is useless without those parts.

I had a very pissed of, whinging baby with me so just left quickly. Yes I should have checked the receipt but I am more pissed off about the lack of bracelet AND necklace that means that I now cannot use one of the items at all! The £3 would have been forgotten had the item been intact. 3 missing charms was no problem as 19 others were there. Or not.

I think Boo was actually being sarcastic or tongue in cheek and not actually suggesting that the OP make a scene. If you read the post right through it says ring the store calmly.

I would let it go - surely by the time you have paid for parking and petrol you will have spent more than the £3 you will get back.

Stick the charms that are left in a drawer, they might come in useful one day.

You are right to be annoyed, but the stress and hassle of returning it aint worth the £3 in my view!

Or if you are adamant, write to their customer services from the comfort of your warm living room - more often than not they will send you a voucher as a 'goodwill' gesture - you can give the voucher to your sister instead.

I work in retail, and I know my store and a lot of chains won't do refunds on Boxing Day, (too busy selling people those absolutely essential bargains everyone desperately needs the day after Christmas) so going in then would be a wasted trip.

Go back early January with receipt, smile and a calm pleasant attitude and explain whats happened. If you still have the tag with the description of what was supposed to be missing that would help. I'm sure you'd get a refund and good service then, and I know that If I had to deal with an issue like this I'd refund no problem in the spirit of good customer relations.

I do wonder at all the people on these types of threads who think its a good idea to go to a shop with this strategy - Is that really what you would do? If so, you may get what you want in the end (if you're lucky) but you'll also spread about a massive amount of bad feeling and anger, look like an unhinged twat and probably end up with an early stroke/high blood pressure problems. Mistakes happen, and the 'faceless' people working in shops have feelings and like anyone else respond better to reasonable calm customers.

Libby, I am actually £6 down as I got an extra item in the 3 for 2 (under her advice) which then I got charged £6 for as the £3 item (that I was told would not qualify for the offer) was then accepted on the offer instead.

There is a more convenient store I could visit and return it to. Or just return the £6 item I didn't actually want.

Maybe, but plenty of people do behave like that, so its not a given.

MrsNozzle she kept the label as it fell off when she was scanning the item. All this wouldn't be a problem if I wasn't a £6 AND a present down!

I still have to buy her another gift so will out of pocket even more. Realistically what I thought was a good bargain and a nice novelty gift will have cost me about £15 which ironically was the price before it was reduced so much

Lucky - sorry didn't realise. I think you'd still have a very good chance at a refund if you have receipt. Most sales assistants would realise that you're not likely to be returning for no reason, especially if you explain it like in your post above.

Oh for goodness sake, just go back in at some point and sort it out politely and calmly. It was a mistake and these things happen. Get a grip. How does this stuff end up as a thread on mumsnet??

Yes I certainly will not be in the shops Boxing Day _ I have far better plans, although we do have to wait until my son finishes work.
He is working 8.5 hours in the warehouse of a very large clothes store where customers simply cannot go for more than one day without buying clothes 😆.

I tend to do most of my shopping online (appreciate this doesn't help the op).

I've also been known to assist shop assistants I'm working out discounts for customers but that's another story.
