To want my bloody money back?!

In here for traffic really - I am at my wits end!

Yesterday I logged into my paypal account and was very nearly sick. Someone had hacked in and managed to buy something for £1,000 off ebay.
I immediately rang paypal and they started their investigations.
I also rang my bank and they stopped my debit card and said that although my balance was 1k down the "transaction" hadn't appeared on my account yet.

Fair play to paypal they refunded me in full last night - the money was sent back onto my debit card but was not appearing in my bank account.
I rang Barclays and they said nothing has come through, balance was still 1k down and no transaction was appearing.
I asked if the problem could be that because my debit card was cancelled were paypal trying to put it back onto that card and couldn't because those numbers no longer existed? but they insisted if they tried to refund on an expired/cancelled card it would still get into my account.

Now I have rang three times today and they've told me it will take up to 10 working days to get the money into my account if it IS actually coming back - they can't tell because there is no transaction appearing.

WHY?! I've been refunded so why is it going to take so long to appear??

I am massively overdrawn, I have zero money left for Christmas and all they can say is they don't know what's happened and wait 10 days!

I think this is because of the way Paypal do refunds. you can't get a temporary overdraft until the money comes back in?

nope bank don't seem to be particularly interested - I'm way way way over my overdraft limit as it is, and charges for the overdraft will be coming in daily. The only thing they said I can do is appeal against the overdraft charges if and when the money gets refunded

Has PayPal refunded to your PayPal account and you now need to transfer it to your bank? Whenever I get a PayPal refund for returned goods it sits in my PayPal account until I go in and transfer it out.

nope I hoped that would happen Lucy but it hasn't it says refunded to card number xxxx. Paypal are insisting its been done but my bank are saying theres nothing and I just need to wait grrrrr

lucy As far as i know if you pay via a debit the funds are transferred from your bank account, so the money is refunded back into that, if you pay via a credit card, the money is refunded back into your paypal account.

I would google the banks ceo's email address & tell them what you've told us.

They usually achieve faster results.

Paypal refunds can be pending for up to ten days, this has happened to me a few times. I've also never had Paypal refund my card - have you not linked your bank account to Paypal directly?

The bank won't be able to see anything as it's pending with Paypal, not them.

Amused- no I don't have my bank account linked only my debit card. So I need to get back onto paypal then do you think?

In my experience they'll just say "it was released on X date, please wait until Y date before contacting us again" Sad

I'm sure you have to have paypal linked to a bank account don't you? If not, I would definitely get onto paypal again and say they need to 'cancel the cheque' and refund it to a bank account

I feel for you OP - ebay is an absolute joke at times with this! It happened to me ... a long time ago mind

Yeah - they spend a lot trying to create that impression. Meanwhile their HQ for Europe is in Luxembourg - ask yourself why that is (aside from tax obviously) - wouldn't you rather deal with an outfit with a decent footprint in the UK so UK regulation could be more easily applied to them?

I don't have any help for your refund - sorry.

But if you set up 2-step authentication on your PayPal account it'll help stop any future fraud.

I had something similar for £300. Paypal refunded my debit card but it actually took 5 days to show back in my bank account

Well that's a bit more optimistic SecretPeanut if this happened to you before I might be ok and maybe I should wait a bit longer.
its just ffs why just before xmas?! not that any other time of the year would have been a good time to take a grand from me mind!

The weird thing is I have it setup so that whenever I make a payment I get an email - I had checked my emails before bed that night via my phone app and then again the next morning and I had no emails at all from paypal.
It hadn't been turned off in the settings either when I logged in and the cheeky sods even added their own mobile number in the paypal verification thingy - im guessing this was so that after I changed my password they could still gain access!

I've changed all my passwords for absolutely everything online now and all different to each other and I've setup the verification so that if anyone logs in I have to provide a code sent to my phone so that's a bit more reassuring that it won't happen again.

Bastards.

It can take up to 7 working days for a PayPal refund to appear in your account. I had a similar issue just last week (retailer refund due to them no longer having laptop I ordered in stock rather than fraud). It's bloody annoying but it will reappear.

I'm also waiting for a new debit card to arrive as I've had fraudulent transactions put through in the last 10 days from two US websites. So I feel your pain on both fronts.

Now in the painful zone where I can't use Amazon or Apple Store because my debit card is blocked and I can't update my account details because I don't have the card yet! Thankfully I'd already done most of my Xmas shopping.

Make sure you get refunded for any overdraft charges they try to give you too.

its not just paypal.

any refunds to Debit/Credit cards can take up to 10 working days to appear back into your account depending on the bank.

Refunds are processed manually via the banks unlike debits from your card.

Blimey that's terrible. It's a good reminder for everyone to be careful. The two step verification thing is good.

Refunds will take a few days to credit back to the original payment method. I expect it'll show up tomorrow or Monday. Can your bank grant you a temporary overdraft in light of the circumstances?

I hadn't realised you hadn't linked your account, i thought you had to do that now.

Where is your refund sent?
If your payment came from your card, it will be refunded to that card. Depending on your card issuer, it may take up to 30 days to complete a refund.
If your payment came from either your bank or your PayPal balance, it will be refunded to your PayPal balance.

So it should go back onto your card.
