DS is 7 and has asked for an iPhone for Christmas Confused

He won't be getting one - he has no need.

We have a family iPad which he uses mainly for games.

He doesn't really have any other gadgets . He's never asked before .

My brother thinks I'm mean and should get him one Hmm

What do your 7 year olds own?

Nothing, except tv and DVD player

Artandco · 06/12/2016 20:46

Nothing. Oh he has a kiddizoom camera. No tv, laptops, tablets, phones etc

arethereanyleftatall · 06/12/2016 20:46

Nothing.

WhereTheFuckIsWonderWoman · 06/12/2016 20:47

DD is 6.5 and almost all her friends seem to have their own iPads/tablets. She doesn't. Like you we have a family tablet and that's enough as far as I'm concerned.

SundayNightRoast · 06/12/2016 20:47

Family ipad.

unused Kindles

No tv so no screen time there.

HighwayDragon1 · 06/12/2016 20:48

6yo dd has
Tablet
Tv
WiiU (in the living room)
Dvd player
2ds

She also wants an iphone, I've told her no, obviously!

mistyegg · 06/12/2016 20:49

A portable MP3 music player (not Apple) and a radio/CD player. Also a very old camera from ELC that we've had 3 years now and sometimes gets played with still. otherwise they have occasional access to my phone/iPad.

IveAlreadyPaid · 06/12/2016 20:49

6 year old has nothing.

Castleheights · 06/12/2016 20:49

Use of
Tv and DVD
Laptop
iPad
Xbox
Nothing is theirs exclusively

Castleheights · 06/12/2016 20:51

iPad and laptop are for homework only, no games

LadyMetroland · 06/12/2016 20:51

None.

TV under adult supervision for set amount of time

PurpleMinionMummy · 06/12/2016 20:52

An old ipad (my dh replaced his with a newer one). Access to family laptop and a family wii u. She's our youngest though. It's far trickier keeping tech out of little hands when older siblings have it ime.

fourandnomore · 06/12/2016 20:52

My almost 7yo has a kindle for kids but she barely uses it, other than that nothing, they watch tv with us as a family a bit, she has a camera but again, not used much.

GravyAndShite · 06/12/2016 20:52

Family iPad that dd would like to think is hers. I imagine many of her friends 'have' iPads in this way too!

Family tv & DVD player

Hand me down CD player in bedroom.

IAmChewie · 06/12/2016 20:53

Currently they have a TV and Sky box and their gran is buying them a kindle each for Xmas. I have DD 7 and DS 5.

AstridPeth · 06/12/2016 20:53

My 7 year old has an old iPod (think it's 4th generation). I don't think young children need gadgets. Dd3 got her first tablet for her 10th birthday a kindle fire. Dd2 (13) just has her phone a samsung s6 and dd1 (14) has her phone (s6 ) and a galaxy tab.
I don't understandthe need for young children to have gadgets at all. They should be using their imagination, playing with toys and reading books. Not sat glued to devices.
I don't think you are mean at all. My two older dd's got their first phones (dh and my hand me downs ) in year 6 and dd3 (now year 6) will be getting a phone around May/sats time.

MrsKCastle · 06/12/2016 20:53

Nothing of their own. Access to family kindle and Xbox360.

bringonyourwreckingball · 06/12/2016 20:58

Dd2 had an iPad mini for her 7th birthday but didn't/doesn't use it much. We have Netflix which she is allowed free rein on the kids setting. We're not home much though so she doesn't watch that much TV. We have an ancient secondhand Wii.

Even Dd1 doesn't have a phone yet and she's 11

imnervous · 06/12/2016 21:02

My almost 8 year old has a tablet that he got for his 7th birthday

He also "shares" a PS4 with his 13 year old brother but I think I've seen him play on it twice since they got it last Christmas

He has use of the family iPad

He has an old tv/DVD combi in his room that he uses very occasionally, probably once or twice a month- when we're desperate for a lie in!

He's getting a 2DS for his birthday on Friday

He'd love his own phone but he can forget that one!!

zad716 · 06/12/2016 21:14

DS (6.5) has

kiddizoom camera (now unused)
wii (now unused)
tablet
xbox one (connected to family TV)
use of shared PC

Definitely won't be letting him have a phone of any sort until he actually needs one.

Twinchaos1 · 06/12/2016 21:17

iPad, basic laptop for homework and PS3. They have limited time of each of these and a limit for screen time in total. They can also watch Tv, DVDs. Their enthusiasm for this stuff comes and goes.

Sirzy · 06/12/2016 21:21

iPad mini (was always against them for children but ds is autistic and I gave in and it's a godsend)

Vetch smart watch thing.

That's it and will be for a long time probably!

ScarletForYa · 06/12/2016 21:21

My dd just has a tablet. She has a tv in her room but it's not a smart tv. She has a portable DVD player but we just use it on holiday. She's 4.5.

CheerfullyIndifferent · 06/12/2016 21:22

My 7 yo is getting a 2DS for Christmas and that's her first proper gadget. She has access to family tablet, tv and Xbox but none of it actually belongs to her.

She asked this week when she would be allowed a phone because apparently someone in Y4 has one. I said when she's a teenager Grin

CountTessa · 06/12/2016 21:26

A household shared fire kindle. And an mp3 player.

I fail to see why a 7 year old needs a phone.
