To buy a Mulberry bag?

So I was recently promoted at work and got a pretty decent (5k) rise. The backdated pay for 2 months plus my Christmas bonus means I will be able to afford my much coveted mulberry bag.

I'm not normally in to labels and don't own anything designer but I love these beautiful bags and have wanted one my whole adult life. BUT I just don't know if I can part with the best part of £1000. Would you? (We have some savings already, no debt and my DH is fine with it.)

Genuinely, go and buy that bag, enjoy the experience of shopping for it and using it.

I adore Mulberry and maybe one day I'll be able to buy one.

Yes I would I have 3 and I love them! Buy the bag and enjoy it!

Of course - if you want to and it makes you happy.

There may be people who would judge but yet wouldn't think twice about spending £££ a week on takeaways and beer or a season ticket for a football club or, a new car or , or .....

(There will be others who will see it as extravagance but if you go down that route then none of us should be buying much at all!)

I used to love mulberry, but they've arbitrarily put their prices up by more than a third and the quality has dropped markedly in recent years.

YANBU at all to buy yourself a lovely bag, but probably worth a look at labels other than mulberry to find one.

Cost per use they are great value!! You've worked hard and got a pay rise, treat yourself.

(I don't have Mulberry but I have beautiful bags that I have owned for twenty or thirty years and use still)

YANBU, I have two. I didn't buy mine though, they were presents from my DH.

That said, I don't like any of their modern designs, I have the scotchgrain from years ago.

They realised the Chinese were into classic British labels and thus doubled the price knowing the Chinese could still afford it. It's a nice bag but I don't like feeling I've been ripped off so I'd buy something else.

Do buy the bag. On Friday they may have 20% off !

Do it! I have a Bayswater and love it! Going to get a tessie satchel this week. Have several other 'designer' bags and as someone says cost per use makes it worth it. Have a cross body Gucci bag that get used most weeks that is still going strong after 12 years of heavy use.

I've the Bayswater and the tote, lovely for work. Also have a much loved Roxanne but that's sadly discontinued now.

If you live anywhere near Somerset you can visit the factory shop for a bargin. Congratulations on your new job.

YANBU! However, do use it. I have treated myself to a couple over the years and they are mostly immaculate because I am too scared to risk getting them wet!! Be smart, don't be like Temp.

Depending on what you have your heart set on and how keen you are to have the bag right now, £1,000 will go a lot further at one of their "secret" sales - I got a £1600 bag for £850 at one of those - you can get on the mailing list and then you get an invitation every now and again.

I am going to be the party pooper here and say £1000 on a fuckin bag!!! Something to keep your phone/key/purse in.

Why are you buying it? To look good to other people? Will it make you feel good in yourself, knowing you are holding something expensive? What will you get from paying a grand for a flap of leather?

Also, even if you do use them like a normal human, they last for AGES. My colleague has been using hers for the 10 years I've known her and it still looks great. Agree with a PP, the Bayswater is gorgeous

I can think of a million and one things I'd rather do with £1,000 other than spend it on a bag including saving it. I always think bags at that price are a total rip off. However, only you know your financial situation and how much a bag is worth to you.

You can afford it so why not? DP bought me one a few years ago and I love it. I don't use it for work but it's used regularly outside of work and looks as good now as it did when he bought it. There is also an outlet store in Bicester village is you have any reservations about paying the full ticket price. Plenty of other stores selling high end bags there too if you wanted to shop around for other labels.

Go on, I would, you can afford it, go for it. Its nice to own a few luxury items, what's wrong with that!

I have two back from when we were Double Income No Kids, and could justify such frivolities. I still love them both and use them all the time.

A cautionary tale - they don't last like they used to and you're unlikely to get 10 years constant wear out of a Bayswater any more. I bought mine in April 2013 (printed oak, so a very durable leather), used it on and off, and within 18 months the piping has worn through at one corner because it's thinner, cheaper leather. I haven't been able to bring myself to pay the quoted £90 to have it repaired.

However, I have a second hand Rosemary (mini Roxanne) which is 10 years old and it's indestructible.

I actually think it's an investment! In you! You are not only buying something beautiful that someone has made in decent working conditions (I.e. not a sweatshop) but you are boosting the UK economy a (teeny tiny) bit! But most importantly you are achieving a long held goal and are able to do so because you are so good at your job that you've got a promotion ! Celebrate it! Every time you use it it will make you feel good!

My Dh bought me a Bayswater a couple of years ago. I love it. Beautiful bag. Treat yourself. Well done on the promotion. :-)
