To buy a Mulberry bag?

So I was recently promoted at work and got a pretty decent (5k) rise. The backdated pay for 2 months plus my Christmas bonus means I will be able to afford my much coveted mulberry bag.

I'm not normally in to labels and don't own anything designer but I love these beautiful bags and have wanted one my whole adult life. BUT I just don't know if I can part with the best part of £1000. Would you? (We have some savings already, no debt and my DH is fine with it.)

I am into designer bags, tbf I am on The Purse Forum, and there was a discussion that designer bags are not the same quality as they used to. Since they start outsourcing to countries such as Turkey, India and China. So your paying for the brand and not the quality.

Aeroflotgirl · 22/11/2016 09:19

I believe Mulberry is made in Turkey not UK so quality not as good

Wombletor · 22/11/2016 09:20

Buy one!
I bought mine at a mulberry outlet at Bicester village 3 years ago and it was £398. Its a mitzy hobo, black and is my winter bag every year. Go on, treat yourself!

HolgerDanske · 22/11/2016 09:21

Do it, and reward yourself with the joy of having something you will properly love.

I don't earn an awful lot, but I have two beautiful designer bags and every time I use them I feel properly happy.

See if you can wait till the sales after Christmas, though - You might be able to get it for at least a few hundred less, and that way you can get a purse to go with it!

PNGirl · 22/11/2016 09:22

It depends on the line/individual bag. My Bayswater was made in Spain but they do still manufacture in Somerset (I live up the road).

2kids2dogsnosense · 22/11/2016 09:23

Buy it,

You want it, you've worked for it - get it!

What will happen to the money if you don't?

It'll sit in the bank bringing you little joy (because you want to spend it on Your Dream Handbag). If you buy the bag you will get a warm glow every time you look at it or touch it.

I wouldn't spend that much on a bag myself, but I have my own indulgences (you possibly wouldn't be prepared to spend £900 on a spaniel, while I consider it coin well spent).

This is what you have wonted for a long time. Go for it.

LurkingQuietly · 22/11/2016 09:29

Ignore anyone doing the whole '£1000 for somewhere to keep your keys' thing. If you've spent your whole adult life wanting one, you can spare the money (and actually you can without even noticing it!) DO IT!

I have three, all bought pre children. My first was with my first xmas bonus - the day it hit my account I walked into JL and bought it! The second with Christmas/birthday money plus some I'd saved. The third a ridiculous impulse buy at the airport (on my way to NY for a shopping holiday, the flight was delayed by 30 minutes, our gate was around the corner from the Mulberry shop so I just went and bought it!). I did earn very well with very low outgoings pre DC.

This is the longest message ever to say DO IT! And bloody well enjoy it.

AbsentmindedWoman · 22/11/2016 09:33

Get it! You want it and can afford it. Treats are good Grin

I have mine 9 years now and do love it and use it regularly - it's a weekender. It was a gift. I will buy another one for myself one day!

RebeccaWithTheGoodHair · 22/11/2016 09:33

For sure do it! I went back to work after having DD and got up to my former earnings. It was such a pleasure to buy something for myself, a proper adult thing again. I love it, use it every day and it's looking fabulous.

I'm not sure what it is, a cross-body one in oxblood. I got it online in the sale and for about £600 down from £900 I think. Anyway, worth every penny as far as I'm concerned. And I actually like them more as they start to get a bit beaten up.

Tinabn · 22/11/2016 09:34

Get it and enjoy using it every day, it's your hard work that made it possible. I had one that I used everyday pre children and cost per use was minus figures! I really wanted a new one and promised myself I would have one if I got back to pre baby weight by the time the youngest graduated😁 - 6 stones later I did it but couldn't afford the bag. He got a job in London, the day we moved him into his flat we were walking down the street, went into a charity shop and there was a mulberry bag, the colour I wanted for £100. Got it , love it,

Taytocrisps · 22/11/2016 09:35

I worked with a lady who has a few expensive handbags. Her justification for this (not that it mattered to me) was that other people think nothing of spending €100+ on a night out between drinks and a taxi home whereas she doesn't drink and spends little or nothing on socializing. She said she takes great care of her handbags and stores them carefully in her house and expects to get a long time out of them.

If you really want it and you can afford it, then go for it. You can save a bit more going forward with your extra income. Oh and congrats on the promotion.

RebeccaWithTheGoodHair · 22/11/2016 09:35

And now because I looked on the Mulberry website to see if I could find it I'm going to have Mulberry ads popping up in my sidebar trying to tempt me ...

taxiforme · 22/11/2016 09:40

Buy the bag. I have had mine years and it still gives me pleasure - have a look at tods too. If you are in the south west pop to the shepton mallet factory shop.

maddogs33 · 22/11/2016 09:40

Sod it, working hard and being able to treat yourself a beautiful bag is one of lifes greatest pleasures!

Saying that I would agree with some of the other posters that they don't make them like they used to. I have a 5 year old Daria Hobo (I think thats what it was!) and the zip needs replacing and the leather has been worn due to daily heavy usage (I am not a princess with my bags, they get a bashing!). That being said it is the best handbag ever, if they still made them I would buy a replacement in a second. There is a handbag hospital you can send them to for repair if needed! Also if you can buy in Heathrow you will save ££

Ratonastick · 22/11/2016 09:41

Congratulations on your promotion! As for the bag, if you want to treat yourself to something you have always coveted from your own money when you have no debts or pressing bills, then no one else gets to have an opinion! Particularly not when it is to celebrate personal achievement.

And I love a Mulberry and my top tip is their outlet store in Bicester village. Sometimes the stock can be a bit sparse, but they usually have lovely bags and are rarely without a neutral Bayswater if that is your fancy. Mind you I got sidetracked by a bright pink Tilly some years ago!

Temporaryname137 · 22/11/2016 09:43

My friend once said to me that whenever she gets a promotion or payrise, she spends the difference on something frivolous - it's a bit of fun (although less fun now it tends to go on DP and DD Wink) and it's only one month so leaves lots of time to be sensible with the rest!

Temporaryname137 · 22/11/2016 09:43

Ack that should have said, "for the first month she spends the difference".

Garthmarenghi · 22/11/2016 09:45

Do it. Do it.

likepeasandcarrots · 22/11/2016 09:48

I bought a bayswater around 4 years ago, paid £795 for it, and I've used it a handful of times at most. I'm too scared to 'spoil' it. It's very irrational I know but I'm the type who keeps things 'for best' and never ends up using them ConfusedBlush

AdoraBell · 22/11/2016 09:49

Buy the bag. You can afford it, you've wanted it for a long time so enjoy it. It's not like you are spending next month's rent on a fancy bag.

Colby43443 · 22/11/2016 09:50

If you're looking for an investment put in another £200 and get a chanel or a hermes. Mulberry isn't an investment bag.

Jellybean83 · 22/11/2016 09:52

Buy the bag and enjoy! I wouldn't think twice.

2014newme · 22/11/2016 09:54

I don't use mine much. Fashions change bags ate not an investment 😂 they are a fashion item that in two years time you won't want to use any more. You will want something else new and shiny. Exception could be a work bag

Mebee · 22/11/2016 09:59

Do it! I'm on my 5th Mulberry, they are worth every penny.

HolgerDanske · 22/11/2016 10:00

I don't kid myself that it's an investment - I just like bags, they make me happy, and I would rather have five expensive bags than twenty cheap ones. I pick classics/discreet ones, so it's not a fashion statement and it won't matter when they're no longer current.

Sigh, I'm so in the mood for another bag!
