Do I need to take her to A&E now!

DD aged 10 has a UTI for past 2 days. Took a sample in to Drs who refused to do a dip test as they are expensive even though she had antibiotics 5 days before for same. Not called me today and DD is now in pain. Given Calpol and loads of water but not sure if I need to take her to A&E. The AIBU is would I be to take her?

How much pain? Is she peeing normally? Where is the pain? Maybe ring 111 for advice.

If you are getting nowhere with GP then I would take her.

Call 111 before you go to A&E - get some proper advice. What makes you think there's an emergency right now?

Poor DD . Does she have a fever? I'm not really up to speed on UTI's, 111 should be able to advise.

Can you phone 111 for an OOH doctor's appointment, you would be likely to be seen quicker than A&E. I took my DD to A&E for what turned out to be a UTI but had symptoms that could have been something more serious and that's what they advised for the next time, we were there for hours waiting to be seen.

Hmm, it would completely depend on any other symptoms for me, as if antibiotics haven't cleared it and they haven't confirmed it actually is a uti it could be something else. I would personally ring nhs direct or out of hours for advice. I don't think I would go to a and e but then it is very hard to know the level of pain etc. I really hope she feels better soon, it's horribly painful, my four year old had one recently and I almost cried watching her go to the loo, we ran her a bath each time she needed the loo and got her to wee in the bath and that helped reduce the pain.

No I wouldn't go to A&E for this. An emergency appointment in the morning would be best unless she has a fever, in which case OOH.

Doesn't sound as if she needs a and e but maybe out of hours gp? Did the gp send a sample away before she had the antibiotics? Either way if she's had antibiotics and still not improving i'd be back at the gp tomorrow asking them to check a urine sample and send it for culture to check what antibiotics its sensitive to.

In the mean time keep encouraging fluids and maybe gove ibuprofen too for the pain? Obviously only you can see her and if you're really worried definitely nhs24/bus direct or a and e.

It's neither an accident nor an emergency so no A&E is not appropriate unless there's some other dreadful symptoms you're withholding.

A dip test is expensive? Didn't the gp offer at least a call back. Call 111, and/or GP apt tomorrow.

No they dont whyohwhy. Do you mean extended hours? Our ooh is open all night during the hours that GPs are not.

Can your dd pee or is she in retention?

There is always a GP around 24 hours in OOH. If you are in England, call 111 to speak to them. Not sure if the system in other regions but if you phone your GP surgery there will be a voice message telling you what to do. Good luck.

Agree 111 or OOH. It is not an accident or an emergency and you would have to wait for hours which is no fun for a child

Call ooh. An untreated uti rises up the urinary tract and can cause kidney infections which are serious. If she's feverish it's all the more important to start new antibiotics tonight

Second that dipsticks are not expensive, I've never heard of them being withheld even when the patient just dropped a sample in.
Can your daughter pass urine? If not the a and e now. If she can but is in pain call the OOH GP - if you ring your practice they should give you the phone number on the answer machine message.
