I refused to pay for ds's apple juice in Pizza Express tonight!

I'm getting all assertive ever since I hit 30.

Tonight dh, ds and I went to pizza express for tea. It was lovely food as always. They now have a piccolo menue for kids for £4.95 so 4 year old ds had this and an apple juice for drink.

Bill came, my bottle of sprite was £1.25 but ds's plastic beaker of apple juice was £1.75. I queried price with waitress, here's how it went:

me 'Is it really £1.75 for a childs apple juice?'

her 'no, but you had a large apple juice'

me 'but I wanted a childs one, he's only 4, and he hasn't even drank it all'

her (in snotty tone) 'but you didn't ask for a childs one, so you were served a large one'

me (in even snottier tone) 'so why is it in a plastic beaker with a straw then?'

Her 'Well what do you want me to do?'

I told her to reduce it to the childs cost, they got the manager and they refused as I had not specified at the time of ordering it was for a child.

FFS. Basic customer service. Makes me so cross.

So I paid the bill, less the £1.75 and left on principal.

I used to be a waitress too, and I'd have hated me back then

you did right - I'm quite surprised at this TBH

MrsGordonRamsay · 11/02/2007 20:56

Bring back, Jack and Danny's

QueenEagle · 11/02/2007 20:57

imo it's down to the waitress to check which size you want.

And imo they were trying it on if they served it in a beaker with a straw, they knew it was a child's one.....

VioletBaudelaire · 11/02/2007 20:57

You did right!
I had a long drawn out debate in Frankie and Benny's as the children's drinks were free, but DS1 decided to swap his coke for my orange juice half way through the meal. The manageress saw this and tried to charge us full price for both.
It was spare ribs at dawn, I can tell you!
(And I won!)

PanicPants · 11/02/2007 20:58

Good for you!

funnypeculiar · 11/02/2007 20:58

Lordy, that is so pathetic of them - it was ordered for a CHILD (she put it in front of one...) why didn't the waitress check? And for 1.75 its so worth their while to just give it you...

mummytosteven · 11/02/2007 20:58

agree with QE - if they served it in a plastic beaker they don't have a leg to stand on really!

pinkbubble · 11/02/2007 20:58

Write and complain to the overall manager as they say a customer is never wrong- You never know they may offer you an apology and vouchers!! TBH if the waitress was doing her job correctly she would of asked what size drink did you DS want!

Spidermama · 11/02/2007 20:58

Well done for standing your ground Northerner. Quite right too.

I used to be a complete walkover but I've got more assertive since having kids. You've got to haven't you?

Gobbledigook · 11/02/2007 20:58

God, I'm surprised at them!!

You had her there though didn't you with the 'why is it in a plastic beaker..' - hehehe! Clever northerner!

ledodgy · 11/02/2007 20:59

You were right. I remember my mum used to be a serial complainer letters written gifts given in response ( we once had the manager of woolworths on our doorstep with flowers and a box of terry's all gold!) and everything. I hated it and was so embarrassed. Now i've turned 30 i'm exactly the same I hate injustice on any level and am prepared to fight it to the end!

MrsGordonRamsay · 11/02/2007 20:59

Do you know, of all the Pizza Express restaurants I have been in, it is the only one I hate.

They time your arrival on their ordering pad, always felt like I was being turned over.

amidaiwish · 11/02/2007 21:00

100% right
am quite shocked at pizza express tbh, have always found them good.
i was collecting take-away the other night, saw them pouring orange juice from those 4pint plastic containers (like milk ones) - it's about £1.99 a glass! was very surprised. that's the last time dh has one of those, he can have wine like me

I only complain at the end incase they add a little something extra to the food.

Gobbledigook · 11/02/2007 21:03

haha!

Bucketsofdynomite · 11/02/2007 21:08

Yup, beaker and straw is admissable evidence. Well spotted.

northerner · 11/02/2007 21:12

Mrsgordonramsey do you live in Harrogate?

MrsGordonRamsay · 11/02/2007 21:13

I used to..............I am LGJ.

Whizzz · 11/02/2007 21:16

Had a similar thing in a pub - waitress took order for me & DH & then looked a DS & we said he wants scampi & chips (ie scampi & chips for a child - he is a child!)
It came but it was an adult one we asked was it a childs portion as it was huge, 'yes' said waitress.
Bill came & we got charged for adults scampi - so pointed this out & eventually after a bit of toing & froing & asking the manager - got it knocked off the bill

northerner · 11/02/2007 21:18

OMG hello LGJ I didn't know that!!!!

Why and when did you change?

OP posts:
MrsGordonRamsay · 11/02/2007 21:23

It is historic.......................

This is my alter ego....I once rather famously said one night, when MN was a lot smaller and people remembered,...........that I would happily breastfeed Gordon Ramsay.

northerner · 11/02/2007 21:25

This is why I don't like it when folk change their name. I'm a virgo, I don't like change yiu know .

moondog · 11/02/2007 21:35

Good on yer.
Once had a huge row in Moroccan hotel about a bottle of wine I was wrongly charged for.
In the end I bloody had to as the bastards had my passport and the bus to the airport was leaving.

I still seethe about it occasionally thoguh....

Jennster · 11/02/2007 21:57

The apple juice they use is coppola. I always ask without ice they fill the glass to the brim so you get far less and it dilutes it all. They keep it in the fridge anyway so it's always cold.
