AIBU to think they lie about...

The side effects of the 1 year old jabs!

Don't get me wrong I'm massively pro vaccine. This isn't a call to arms for no jabs. But my DS had his a fortnight ago and it's been hell since. Spiking temps, won't sleep, won't eat, super clingy, doesn't want milk, high pitched squeaky protest to going to bed/being put down/being cuddled/not being cuddled/being picked up etc etc.
I've read the NHS leaflets and websites and it plays it all down: mild this, 2-3 days blah blah blah LIES. All my friends with babies the same age say they had a good 2-3 weeks of reactions and poorly babies.
AND I've just read that 3 weeks after the jabs they might get a mild case of MUMPS.

Should also say I have taken my child to a doc who also said it was very normal and the usual side effects they see!

So: AIBU to think they downplay them?

Dd had no ill effects at all - it's the luck of the draw I think.

I guess all babies are different. Had absolutely no side effects with any of mine.

I didn't experience this with any of mine, or any of the babies I've looked after. On the whole, they're a bit tetchy the day after and Calpol sorts it out.

I think you may attribute any problems with your son to the vaccine when there could be any number of causes; teething, a virus, growth spurt?

I hope he feels better soon anyway, it doesn't sound much fun Sad.

Mine were all fine with the MMR.

But 2 (of 3) all were afflicted after the pre-school booster - no idea why as they'd been fine as babies. Hot, headachey and just 'off'. Yes it cleared quickly, but not very nice for the 36 hours or so it lasted.

There are some horrible bugs going around at the moment, which hang around for weeks. Could easily have picked one of them up.

I think it's just how well the body copes. I was really unwell after my whooping cough vaccine but didn't have any reaction to the flu vaccine a month later

In winter at an average nursery how many children have a virus or a cold at anyone time, probably quite a few. All children also have vaccines the chances of the two coinciding are actually quite high. Some of these mild illnesses maybe be vaccine related but most of them won't be, Its called causation and correlation.

Dd had them about a year ago, I don't remember there being much reaction.

It really wouldn't be helpful for the NHS to warn parents that their child could possibly suffer with a high temperature or side effects as it could deter people from vaccinating. Any symptoms pale into comparison with the horrific illnesses the injections are preventing.

I understand you're not anti vaccine but your claims may put other parents off getting the injections.

6 here only one had any sort of reaction because they were allergic to the stuff it was cultured in.

Hi OP - just to let you know that my DD was very similar. She also got a faint rash which was worrying although listed as a possible side effect. I did a lot of googling and worried quite a bit but she was back to her old self after a few weeks. Hope yours recovers quickly - I just kept telling myself that any of these side effects were nothing compared to the diseases themselves.

Though they do actually do this. It's on the website and in all pack info inserts.

The OP, if I read it right, is more concerned about the duration of the side-effects (which might be going beyond the NHS warnings) rather than the basic fact that side effects exist.

Also, big development leap at about 13 months which can cause all those things, so might be a combination of that and the vaccine or might be all one or all the other. Bloody rotavirus was the worst, babies' older brother came down with diarrhoea the next day. Still, he hadn't been vaccinated as a baby and got it at 13 months when the effects lasted over 7 weeks - so definitely in favour of that vaccine! But they don't make enough of how contagious that one is.

Sorry to hear he's suffering Op - none of my 3 DC had any side effects at all. Hope he feels better soon.

No side effects here either, we had them last month the day before our holiday so took him on a plane less than 24 hours later & he was fine. I was dreading it!

Absolutely. Long time ago now but all of mine had temperatures, diarrhoea and took a fortnight to recover from the mmr. but each time the HV would look at me like i was the first person to have ever joined up the dots in such a crazy way.

Massive conspiracy to prevent discussion on this one.

It is frustrating when you feel like you've not been told the whole story and can't make an informed decision.

I had something done in hospital a few weeks ago and ended up back in today with problems from it and being told "ah yes sometimes this can happen and problems can continue" well why did no one tell me?! I can see why they don't tell you worse case scenario as you'd get people refusing vaccinations, procedures etc. But it's annoying to be told it's not unexpected to suffer afterwards when you weren't made aware.

Sorry your DS has been suffering - sounds horrid :(
I'm afraid YABU though. My DCs were fine with their jabs, as were the vast majority of people I know. Sadly, there can be an unfortunate few who have side effects.
But at this time of year, it could also be a coincidence. So many bugs going around. No way of knowing if your DS is ill because of the jab or a bug he picked up at exactly the same time.

Sorry your little one is miserable, no side effects here either. I wonder if it's just coincidence that he had the jab but has in fact come down with an unrelated virus. Lots of bugs circulating at this time of year. Many viruses have a fairly similar set of symptoms so I would imagine it's quite hard to determine whether it's vaccine related or a bug. Have you heard of anyone else (maybe in nursery) suffering from something similar in the last few weeks?
